CU B.Des FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Des (Product and Industrial Design) and B.Des (Fashion Design) or B.Des (Interior Design) at Chandigarh University? Which one should I choose?
Ans. CU offers multiple B.Des specializations including Product and Industrial Design, Fashion Design, and Interior Design, all under the University Institute of Design (UID). B.Des (Product and Industrial Design) focuses on designing physical products, transportation vehicles, consumer electronics, and UI/UX interfaces. B.Des (Fashion Design) focuses on clothing, textiles, and fashion accessories. B.Des (Interior Design) focuses on spatial design and interior environments. The semester fee is Rs. 1,09,000 for all three specializations. If you are interested in designing products, vehicles, or digital interfaces, Product and Industrial Design is the right choice. If you are passionate about clothing and fashion, choose Fashion Design, and if you want to design spaces and interiors, choose Interior Design.
Ques. What design software and tools will I learn in the B.Des (Product and Industrial Design) program at CU?
Ans. The program provides comprehensive training in industry-standard design software including SolidWorks (for 3D CAD modeling), Rhino (for surface modeling), Fusion 360 (for product design and simulation), and Figma (for UI/UX design). Students also get exposure to IoT integration, Arduino-based prototyping for creating proof-of-concept models, AI-assisted design tools, and wearable technology design. The well-equipped studios include a Digital Rendering Studio, Prototyping Studio, Ceramic Studio, Wood Studio, and Paint Studio, providing hands-on experience with both digital and physical design processes.
Ques. Is CUCET mandatory for B.Des admission at Chandigarh University? Can I get admission without appearing for CUCET?
Ans. Unlike most other programs at CU, CUCET is NOT compulsory for B.Des admission. Students can get direct admission to the B.Des program without appearing for CUCET, provided they meet the eligibility criteria of 55% marks in 10+2. However, appearing for CUCET is strongly recommended as it makes students eligible for scholarships of up to 100% of the semester fee. Students who do not appear for CUCET will not be eligible for CUCET-based scholarships. CUET UG score is also accepted for scholarship purposes. So while admission is possible without CUCET, the financial benefit of appearing for CUCET is significant.
Ques. What are the career opportunities after completing B.Des (Product and Industrial Design) from Chandigarh University?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in Product Design (designing household products, furniture, electronic appliances, medical equipment, lifestyle products), Transportation Design (working with automotive OEMs like Tata, Hyundai, Bajaj, Honda), UI/UX Design (designing digital interfaces for apps and websites), and Design Consultancy. Top recruiters from CU's UID department include Tata, Royal Enfield, Capgemini, Cognizant, Hyundai, Bajaj, Honda, Crompton, and Siemens. Graduates can also pursue M.Des (Master of Design) for specialization and academic careers, or start their own design studios.
Ques. Does the B.Des program at CU include mandatory internships, and how does the industrial training work?
Ans. Yes, mandatory industrial training and internships are an integral part of the B.Des (Product and Industrial Design) curriculum at CU. Students are required to complete internships with design studios, OEMs, startups, and manufacturing industries as part of their program. The department also organizes expert talks, workshops, and live design projects with industry partners to ensure students are industry-ready. The compulsory industrial training component gives students real-world exposure to the design process from concept to production, which is a significant advantage when entering the job market.
Ques. How does the B.Des (Product and Industrial Design) from CU compare to programs at NID or NIFT? Is the degree recognized for government design jobs?
Ans. NID (National Institute of Design) and NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) are premier government design institutes with highly competitive admissions (NID DAT and NIFT entrance exams). CU's B.Des is a private university program with easier admission through CUCET. While NID and NIFT have stronger brand recognition in the design industry, CU's B.Des offers comparable infrastructure, industry connections, and placement opportunities at a more accessible admission threshold. The degree is UGC-recognized and valid for government design positions. For government design jobs, candidates typically need to clear specific recruitment exams regardless of the institution. CU's strong industry tie-ups with automotive and consumer goods companies make it a practical choice for students who want industry placements rather than academic or government design roles.
