CU BE (Lateral) CSE FAQs
Ques. The BE Lateral CSE fee at CU is Rs. 1,53,000 per semester, which seems high. How does the scholarship actually work and what is the realistic cost after scholarship?
Ans. The CUCET scholarship is merit-based and applied on the semester fee. If you score 70-79.99 in CUCET Phase 1, you get 40% scholarship, reducing the fee from Rs. 1,53,000 to Rs. 91,800 per semester. A 50% scholarship (score 80-90) brings it down to Rs. 76,500 per semester. For a 100% scholarship (score 90.01-100), the tuition fee is fully waived. However, to retain the scholarship each year, you must maintain a minimum 7.5 CGPA with no E, F, or I grades. Students who lose their scholarship mid-course have to pay the full fee from the next semester. It is strongly advisable to appear for CUCET Phase 1 (before 30th April 2026) as the scholarship slabs are significantly better than Phase 2.
Ques. Is the BE Lateral CSE at CU the same as the regular BE CSE? Will the degree mention 'lateral entry'?
Ans. The BE (Lateral Entry) CSE degree awarded by CU is equivalent to the regular 4-year BE CSE degree in terms of the qualification. The degree is recognized by AICTE and UGC. In most cases, the degree certificate does not separately mention 'lateral entry'. The program covers the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year curriculum of the regular BE CSE program. The 1st year subjects (engineering mathematics, physics, basic programming, and engineering drawing) are not part of the lateral entry curriculum. The core CSE subjects from 2nd year onwards are identical to those in the regular program.

Ans. Yes, BE (Lateral Entry) CSE graduates from CU are fully eligible to appear for GATE. The relevant GATE paper is CS (Computer Science and Information Technology). GATE CS opens doors to M.Tech admissions at IITs and NITs, as well as PSU jobs at companies like BSNL, BHEL, and DRDO. CU's CSE curriculum covers most of the GATE CS syllabus including data structures, algorithms, operating systems, computer networks, database management, and theory of computation. Students targeting GATE are advised to start preparation from the 2nd year itself, as the 3-year lateral entry program is relatively compressed.
Ques. What is the difference between BE CSE (Lateral Entry) and BE CSE (Hons.) with AI/ML or Data Science specializations at CU? Should I choose the regular CSE or a specialization?
Ans. The regular BE CSE (Lateral Entry) covers the core computer science curriculum without a specific specialization. The Hons. specializations (AI/ML, Data Science, Cyber Security, etc.) have a higher semester fee (e.g., Rs. 1,85,500 for CSE AI/ML lateral entry) but provide a focused curriculum in emerging technologies. If you are clear about your career direction in AI, data science, or cybersecurity, the specialized programs offer a more targeted education and may have better placement prospects in those specific domains. If you prefer a broader foundation with flexibility to choose electives, the regular BE CSE (Lateral Entry) is a better choice.
