CU BE CSE (AI) Lateral FAQs
Ques. What is the actual difference between the B.E. CSE (AI) Lateral Entry and the regular 4-year B.E. CSE (AI) at CU? Do lateral entry students miss out on anything?
Ans. Lateral entry students join directly in the 2nd year (3rd semester), skipping the first-year foundation courses. This means they miss out on some basic engineering subjects like Engineering Mathematics, Physics, and introductory programming covered in Year 1. However, the AI specialisation subjects from Year 2 onwards are identical for both lateral and regular students. Diploma holders who already have a strong technical foundation generally adapt well. Students who feel gaps in their basics can use CU's open electives and value-added courses to bridge them.
Ques. Is a diploma in CSE/IT mandatory, or can a diploma holder from other engineering branches (like Mechanical or Civil) also apply?
Ans. No, the eligibility specifically requires a diploma in CSE, IT, or ECE (Electronics and Communication Engineering). Diploma holders from branches like Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering are not eligible for this specific program. However, they may be eligible for lateral entry in other B.E. programs at CU (such as Mechanical or Civil Engineering). B.Sc. graduates with Mathematics as a subject are also eligible, regardless of their B.Sc. specialisation, provided they have 60% marks.
Ques. How does the AI curriculum at CU compare to what is taught in the regular B.E. CSE (AI) program? Is the lateral entry version a diluted version?
Ans. The lateral entry program covers the same AI specialisation subjects as the regular program from Year 2 onwards. The curriculum includes machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, computer vision, natural language processing, data engineering, and intelligent systems. The only difference is the absence of Year 1 foundation subjects. The degree awarded is the same B.E. in CSE (AI), and there is no distinction on the degree certificate between lateral and regular entry. Employers and higher education institutions treat both degrees equally.
Ques. What are the realistic career options after completing this program, and how does the AI specialisation help compared to a general CSE degree?
Ans. Graduates of this program are eligible for roles such as AI Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, Computer Vision Engineer, NLP Engineer, and Software Developer with AI focus. The AI specialisation provides a significant advantage over a general CSE degree in the current job market, where AI and ML skills are among the most in-demand. Companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, and numerous AI startups actively recruit from CU's engineering programs. The ABET accreditation of CU's engineering programs also opens doors for higher studies and jobs abroad.
Ques. Can a lateral entry student at CU apply for the same scholarships as regular students? Are there any restrictions?
Ans. Yes, lateral entry students are eligible for CUCET-based scholarships and most other scholarship schemes at CU. The merit scholarship for lateral entry students is calculated based on diploma marks (not Class 12 marks), with the same percentage slabs: 90% and above in diploma gets 50% scholarship, 85-89.99% gets 20%, and 80-84.99% gets 10%. CUCET-based scholarships are also available and are the primary route for maximum scholarship benefits. Defence, sibling, and other concession schemes are equally applicable.
Ques. Is it possible to switch from the lateral entry B.E. CSE (AI) to the regular B.E. CSE (AI) program after joining, if a student feels they need more foundational training?
Ans. Generally, switching between programs after admission is not straightforward and requires formal approval from the university administration. CU does not have a standard policy for such transfers, and it is unlikely to be permitted mid-program. Students who feel they need stronger foundations are advised to use CU's open electives, value-added courses, and self-study resources. If a student is genuinely concerned about foundational gaps, it is better to address this before joining by reviewing the Year 1 syllabus of the regular program independently.
