Anna University M.Sc FAQs

Ques. What is CEETA-PG and how is it different from TANCET for M.Sc admission at Anna University?

Ans. CEETA-PG is conducted by Anna University specifically for M.Sc and MCA admissions into its University Departments. TANCET covers ME, M.Tech, M.Arch, M.Plan, and MBA but not M.Sc. Both share the same registration window and are conducted on consecutive days in May, but test different syllabi. For M.Sc, only the CEETA-PG score is relevant. TANCET scores are not interchangeable with CEETA-PG for M.Sc seat allocation.

Ques. Why do M.Sc Computer Science and IT fees cost much more than M.Sc Mathematics at Anna University?

Ans. Anna University M.Sc Computer Science and IT fees are INR 3,49,660 versus INR 86,660 for M.Sc Mathematics because technology programmes involve higher costs for computer labs, software licensing, and hardware. Government fee regulation allows universities to charge higher fees for professional-track science programmes that consume more institutional resources. The curriculum overlap between M.Sc CS and an MCA or B.Tech is significant, which is reflected in the cost structure.

Ques. Is an Anna University M.Sc degree valid for CSIR-NET or SET exams to qualify for lectureship?

Ans. Yes, Anna University M.Sc in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Science, and related subjects qualifies as the basic credential for CSIR-NET and Tamil Nadu SET. The degree must be from a UGC-recognised university, which Anna University is. Clearing NET or SET opens pathways to government college teaching and government research fellowships including JRF, which carries a monthly stipend of INR 37,000 for the first 2 years.

Ques. Can Anna University M.Sc graduates get direct PhD admission without clearing a separate entrance exam?

Ans. No, PhD at most universities requires GATE, CSIR-NET/JRF, or an institutional written test. At Anna University, PhD candidates in science typically clear the university’s doctoral entrance test and interview. Direct PhD without an exam is available only for candidates with a valid JRF fellowship. GATE-qualified M.Sc graduates in engineering science fields are eligible for PhD in engineering departments at NITs and IITs.

Ques. What career paths are common for Anna University M.Sc Science and Technology Communication graduates?

Ans. M.Sc Science and Technology Communication graduates find roles as science journalists, technical writers, museum educators, and documentary researchers. Government science agencies like CSIR, ISRO, and DST hire science communicators for public outreach. Private roles include content creation for e-learning platforms and pharma communication teams. This is one of the few PG programmes in India designed specifically for science-trained communicators, giving Anna University graduates a distinct edge in this niche.
