Anna University M.Tech FAQs

Ques. How does the 70:30 GATE and CEETA-PG merit formula work for seat allotment?

Ans. Anna University computes a combined merit score: 70% of the normalized GATE percentile plus 30% of the CEETA-PG percentile. A strong CEETA-PG performance can improve the final rank even with a moderate GATE score. All GATE applicants must also appear for CEETA-PG. The combined rank determines branch and campus allotment through CEAP counselling rounds.

Ques. Does the AICTE GATE scholarship require a separate claim after joining?

Ans. Yes, a separate claim is needed through the institution’s nodal officer. After joining, submit the claim form with proof of GATE score, admission letter, and bank details. Once processed, INR 12,400 per month is credited for 24 months. Filing early avoids a 4 to 6 week delay in the first credit.

Ques. Which Anna University campus is best for M.Tech, and how do the three differ?

Ans. CEG (College of Engineering Guindy, established 1794) covers the broadest engineering streams: VLSI, Structural Engineering, Power Systems, and Computer Science. MIT (Madras Institute of Technology) at Chromepet covers Aerospace, Printing Technology, and Production Engineering. ACT (Alagappa College of Technology) focuses on chemical and material sciences: Polymer Science, Petrochemicals, Food Technology, and Textile Technology. Campus choice should follow the target specialization.

Ques. Is a lateral PhD possible directly after M.Tech at Anna University?

Ans. Yes, Anna University admits M.Tech graduates to PhD without a waiting period. GATE and UGC-NET holders are exempt from the PhD written test. The institutional Anna Research Fellowship (ARF) offers INR 31,000 per month plus 24% HRA for full-time scholars, rising to INR 50,000 per month for merit-selected candidates from the 2026 cycle.

Ques. How are M.Tech seats split between GATE and non-GATE categories?

Ans. A fixed percentage of seats is reserved for GATE category candidates, with remaining seats filled through CEETA-PG. GATE seats in CSE and Electrical Engineering are highly competitive because GATE scorers cluster there. Non-GATE seats through CEETA-PG are comparatively easier to secure in niche streams like Leather Technology, Rubber Technology, or Coastal Management. Checking the branch-wise seat matrix on the CEAP portal before submitting preferences helps plan strategically.
