Ques. Is hostel accommodation mandatory for MA students at Annamalai University?
Ans. Yes. Annamalai University is a residential university and hostel admission is compulsory for all enrolled MA students. Men stay in Malligai Illam and women in the designated women’s hostel. Annual hostel and mess charges are INR 50,000 for general students and INR 24,000 for SC/SCA/ST residents, with mess charges adjusted from scholarship amounts where applicable.
Ques. Can a science or commerce graduate apply for an MA at Annamalai University?
Ans. Yes. For MA Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Population Studies, Economics, History, and Rural Development, the only requirement is a pass in any Bachelor’s degree regardless of stream. A B.Sc. or B.Com. graduate can apply directly. For MA English, the degree must include English as Part II or Part III. For MA Tamil, Hindi, or Linguistics, the relevant language must appear in the qualifying degree curriculum.
Ques. How competitive is MA admission and what UG marks are typically required?
Ans. Since the minimum eligibility is a pass for most programs, actual competition depends on the applicant pool each cycle. Popular specialisations like MA English and Economics attract more applicants. There is no published annual cutoff. Candidates with higher UG percentages and relevant honours subjects have a clear advantage during merit ranking. Applying early and securing a strong UG aggregate improves the chances of getting a preferred specialisation.
Ques. Does Annamalai University accept CUET PG scores for MA admission?
Ans. No. Annamalai University conducts merit-based MA admissions using qualifying degree aggregate marks and a personal interview at the department level. It does not use CUET PG, TANCET, or any external entrance test for MA programs. This is different from central universities like Pondicherry University, which requires CUET PG scores for MA admissions.

At Annamalai University, you are eligible for a part-time Ph.D. in Yoga if you hold a relevant Master’s degree with required minimum marks and qualify the entrance/UGC-NET (if applicable). As self-employed, submit a self-declaration NOC on letterhead stating flexible work schedule and research commitment. Confirm guidelines with the university.
Candidates applying to the Ph.D. programs should have to pass in Master’s Degree with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) or in an examination recognized as equivalent to it. Annamalai University also conducts its own entrance examination for admission to the various pharmacy and Ph.D. programs. You can apply online from the official website of Annamalai University.
M.Phil programs are not offered in distance learning mode. Moreover, according to the New Education Policy of the country, M.Phil programs have been discontinued from the 2022-23 academic session.
Annamalai offers admission to its B.P.Ed program based on the merit of the Qualifying Examination, Sports and Games Participation, Games and Sports skill test, Track and Field Skill test, and Bonus marks for possession of a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.
