AMU Ph.D. (Fine Arts) FAQs
Ques. Is UGC-NET qualification mandatory for admission to Ph.D. Fine Arts at AMU, or can I apply without it?
Ans. UGC-NET qualification is not mandatory for admission to the Ph.D. Fine Arts programme at AMU. Candidates without NET/JRF can apply and appear in AMU's own Departmental Entrance Test (DET), which consists of two sections: Section A (Research Aptitude, common for all) and Section B (Fine Arts subject-specific). However, if you hold a valid UGC-NET/JRF certificate in Fine Arts or a closely related subject, you may be exempted from the written DET as per UGC norms, though you will still need to appear for the interview and research proposal presentation. Qualifying JRF additionally makes you eligible for a monthly fellowship of Rs. 37,000, which is a significant financial benefit during your doctoral journey.
Ques. What is the difference between Full Time and Part Time Ph.D. in Fine Arts at AMU, and which is better for working professionals?
Ans. The Full Time Ph.D. at AMU requires scholars to be present on campus regularly and is not compatible with full-time employment. The minimum duration is 3 years and maximum is 6 years. The Part Time Ph.D., on the other hand, is designed for working professionals and has a minimum duration of 4 years and maximum of 7 years. The course fee per semester for Part Time is Rs. 50,000 (significantly higher than Rs. 26,100 per semester for Full Time). Importantly, Part Time Ph.D. scholars are not provided hostel accommodation. For working professionals who cannot take a career break, Part Time is the practical choice, but Full Time offers better research immersion, fellowship eligibility, and lower fees.
Ques. What research areas or specializations are available under Ph.D. Fine Arts at AMU?
Ans. The Department of Fine Arts at AMU offers research across a broad spectrum of visual arts disciplines. Scholars can pursue research in areas such as painting (Indian and Western traditions), sculpture, printmaking, art history and criticism, contemporary art practices, Islamic art and aesthetics, folk and tribal art traditions, and visual culture studies. The department has faculty with expertise in both traditional and contemporary art forms. Before applying, it is advisable to identify a potential supervisor whose research interests align with your proposed topic and reach out to them informally, as having a supervisor willing to guide you strengthens your research proposal during the interview.
Ques. How competitive is the Ph.D. Fine Arts admission at AMU, and how many seats are available?
Ans. The Ph.D. Fine Arts programme at AMU is moderately competitive. Based on historical data (2022-23 cycle), approximately 6 seats were available in the Fine Arts department. The number of seats can vary each year depending on faculty availability and UGC norms. The selection process involves both the written DET and an interview/research proposal presentation, so candidates with a well-articulated research proposal and strong subject knowledge have a good chance. NET/JRF qualified candidates have an advantage as they are exempted from the written test and are often preferred for fellowship-linked seats.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. Fine Arts at AMU while receiving a fellowship, and what are the conditions?
Ans. Yes, AMU actively supports fellowship-linked research. If you qualify UGC-JRF, CSIR, MANF, or any other national fellowship, you can receive the fellowship amount during your Ph.D. at AMU, subject to the condition that the grant is provided to the university by the respective funding agency (UGC/DBT/Ministry). The fellowship is disbursed as per the rules of the concerned scheme. Scholars must submit progress reports periodically to the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) and maintain satisfactory research progress to continue receiving the fellowship. Additionally, scholars are required to publish research papers and present at conferences as part of the Ph.D. requirements.
Ques. What documents are required at the time of AMU Ph.D. Fine Arts admission, and is there any age limit?
Ans. At the time of admission, candidates need to submit: 10th and 12th mark sheets, graduation and post-graduation mark sheets and degree certificates, NET/JRF scorecard (if applicable), valid ID proof (Aadhaar/Passport/PAN), passport-size photographs, migration certificate from the last attended university, character certificate, category certificate (if applicable), and a research proposal. There is no upper age limit specified for Ph.D. admission at AMU. However, candidates must ensure their qualifying examination is recognized by AMU. The migration and character certificate must be submitted by September 30, 2026, failing which the university reserves the right to cancel admission.
