AMU Ph.D. (Hindi) FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs at AMU?

Ans. The Ph.D. program at AMU is a direct doctoral program requiring a Master's degree for admission. The M.Phil. program is a 1-2 year postgraduate research degree that can be pursued independently or as an integrated pathway to Ph.D. The Ph.D. program focuses on original research contribution with a minimum 3-year duration, while M.Phil. is shorter and emphasizes coursework and preliminary research. Ph.D. graduates are eligible for academic positions, while M.Phil. holders can pursue teaching or research positions at college level.

Ques. Is the written test mandatory for all Ph.D. candidates?

Ans. No, candidates who have qualified NET/JRF or GATE within the last three years are exempted from the written test. However, they must still appear for the presentation-cum-interview, which is mandatory for all candidates. Foreign nationals are also exempted from the written test but must appear for the interview in person or through video conferencing. The interview carries significant weightage in the final selection process.

Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. on a part-time basis while working?

Ans. Yes, AMU offers part-time Ph.D. programs for eligible candidates. To be eligible for part-time Ph.D., you must have been in continuous service in a government/public sector undertaking or R&D organization for at least two years and have sanctioned study leave for one year. Assistant Professors (Contractual), Guest Teachers, and permanent school teachers with five years of service are also eligible. The part-time program has a minimum duration of 3.5 years and maximum of 7 years, compared to 3-5 years for full-time programs.

Ques. What are the publication requirements before submitting the Ph.D. thesis?

Ans. Before submitting your Ph.D. thesis, you must publish at least one research paper in a refereed/peer-reviewed journal and present at least two papers in national or international conferences or seminars. You need to provide evidence of these publications and presentations in the form of published reprints and presentation certificates. This requirement ensures that your research contributes to the academic community and meets international standards of scholarly work.

Ques. What happens if my supervisor is unavailable during my research period?

Ans. If your supervisor becomes unavailable for more than 12 months (due to leave, retirement, or other reasons), the Committee of Advanced Studies and Research (CASR) will appoint a new supervisor on the recommendation of the Board of Studies. You can also request a change of supervisor if specific reasons justify it, which will be considered by the CASR on departmental recommendation. The change of supervisor does not affect your registration period, which continues from your original admission date.

Ques. What is the maximum time allowed to complete the Ph.D. program?

Ans. The maximum duration to complete a full-time Ph.D. program at AMU is 5 years from the date of admission. This includes coursework completion (within 1 year) and thesis submission. If you cannot complete within 5 years, you may request an extension of up to 1 additional year through the Board of Studies on the recommendation of your Research Advisory Committee. Women scholars and Persons with Disability (more than 40%) are eligible for a relaxation of 2 additional years. Part-time Ph.D. has a maximum duration of 7 years with similar extension provisions.
