COEP B.Tech Lateral FAQs

Ques. Do lateral entry students at COEP receive the same degree as regular B.Tech students?

Ans. Yes. Lateral entry students complete Years 2, 3, and 4 alongside regular students and receive the same "Bachelor of Technology" degree from COEP Technological University. The certificate does not indicate lateral entry or any distinction from the regular route. Employers and graduate admissions committees treat it identically to a degree earned via the standard 4-year route.

Ques. Is there a separate entrance exam for COEP lateral admission, or is it based on diploma marks alone?

Ans. There is no separate entrance exam for DSE CAP. The merit list is prepared entirely on diploma aggregate percentage, with tie-breaking rules for identical scores. This differs from regular B.Tech admission, which requires MHT-CET or JEE Main scores. Diploma holders need only register on the DTE Maharashtra portal and submit marksheets to participate in DSE CAP counselling.

Ques. Which diploma branches qualify for COEP B.Tech CSE and AI/ML lateral entry?

Ans. DTE Maharashtra specifies eligible diploma disciplines for each B.Tech branch in the DSE CAP information brochure. For CSE and AI and ML lateral entry, diploma holders from Computer Engineering, Information Technology, and Electronics are typically eligible. For core branches like Mechanical or Civil, the corresponding diploma in that domain is required. Always confirm the specific eligible disciplines in the official DTE Maharashtra DSE CAP brochure for the current year before applying.

Ques. How competitive is DSE CAP for COEP B.Tech CSE lateral entry?

Ans. COEP’s lateral CSE seats are among the most sought-after in Maharashtra’s DSE CAP given the college’s brand and placement record. Official last-admitted percentages are not separately published, but applicants with diploma aggregates above 90% have a stronger chance at CSE and AI and ML, while core branches like Electrical or Civil are accessible to candidates above 80 to 85%. Filling multiple preference options across branches improves allotment probability.

Ques. Can a lateral entry student at COEP apply for a branch change after joining Year 2?

Ans. Branch change policies apply to all enrolled students and are processed at the end of the first year of enrollment, which for lateral entry students is Year 2. Eligibility depends on seat availability and the minimum CGPA threshold set for that transfer cycle. Branch changes for lateral students from core engineering to CSE or AI and ML are extremely rare due to high competition from the larger regular student pool.

No, you must have a valid score in MHT-CET for admissions to B.Tech program of this Institute. You can't obtain admission without having a valid entrance exam score.
