Established in 1927, Montana State University Billings is the third-largest university in Billings, Montana. MSUB is renowned for its strong education and rehabilitation majors and offers over 160 programs to students aspiring to study in the USA.

MSUB saw a 2.3% increase in the total student enrollment for Fall 2018, which is the maximum increase seen in the last 4 years. Having an international student enrollment of 80 students from several countries, MSUB provides equal opportunities to international students as well.

The university has been working to address student needs and has therefore been able to raise more money for scholarships and cut down the housing cost to make the studies more affordable for the students. The on-campus housing cost of the university is 20% lower than that of any other place in the state.

The university is home to about 4,315 students from over 23 countries. It offers admissions into its associate, bachelor, and master degrees through 5 colleges. The university provides students with full-time and part-time options and has around 2,238 full-time enrollments and 1,875 part-time student enrollment.

Student Enrollment College

The programs offered at the college are delivered in-person, online or hybrid. Various study areas such as science, computer science, business administration, English, education, psychology, public relations, etc. are offered to the students.

The City College of MSU Billings offers 18 Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs, two Associate of Arts (AA) programs, 5 Associate of Science (AS) programs, one ASN (RN) program, and 11 certificates of applied science programs.

Campus

MSUB has a 100 acres campus set in Billings, the largest city in Montana state. There are more than 60 student organizations in which a student can get involved and enjoy campus life.

The campus has housing facilities available with access to the computer lab, gym, library, dining services, etc. Students can also take benefits of the academic support center, student health services and take out some time to explore Billings.

Residence

There are both on-campus and off-campus housing facilities available for the students. On-campus housing is a great way to get American experience while being close to all the necessary facilities available at the university. Living on campus also makes participation in campus activities easier and gives better access to campus facilities like the library, gym, computer labs, etc.

  • On-campus housing offers residence halls with single as well as double room option.
    • Many other facilities that are free of cost like the laundry room, hot shower all day long, student fitness center, computer lab, and a lounge with TV, etc. are offered.
    • The meals are not restricted to a single variety or taste rather it is available in a variety of taste and style with different dietary needs. The cost of various meal plans varies from 1665-1840 USD.
    • Compared to the off-campus living option, on-campus living is 20% low cost.
    • The total for a double room ranges from 1870 USD to 2250 USD per semester whereas for a single room it ranges from 2262 USD to 2725 USD per semester.
  • For living off-campus several other expenses such as payment of bills and other facilities have to be incurred which makes it a costlier option for students.
    • Estimates of these costs for 1 and 2 bedroom apartments or houses is estimated to be between 720 USD per month to 1,130 USD per month.
    • Students can look for student housing options such as rented and shared apartments, homestays, etc.

Admission Process

For admissions at MSUB, all the international applicants are expected to follow the procedure and rules laid down by the university. All the documents must be sent to the Admissions and Records Office and applicants seeking additional information can mail at internationaladmissions@msubillings.edu.

Application: Applicants should complete a signed international student application form either online or paper application.

Application Fee: 30 USD for undergraduate and 40 USD for the graduate, which can be paid online, sent through money order, check or wire transfer.

Application deadline: For undergraduate students – Fall semester: June 15; Spring semester: November 16; summer semester: March 15.

For graduate students – Fall semester: June 1; Spring semester: October 1; summer semester: February 1.

Cost of Attendance

The annual cost of attendance for international students is arrived at by taking a total of the tuition fees and living expenses. Students can estimate their budget to study in the USA and plan accordingly.

Students taking online courses will have to bear an additional sum of 30 USD for each credit up to 360 USD. Also, the mandatory health insurance of 1,000 USD will have to be taken by each student.

Scholarship and Financial Aids

The University awards over 500 scholarships to its students in the form of book scholarships of 200 USD up to full tuition and fees. Overall the university commits around 1.65 million USD in terms of scholarships.

To be eligible to apply for a scholarship, a student must apply to the college or university first and then complete an application for a scholarship. More than 60% of students get financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships, work-study programs or student loans.

Following are a few prominent scholarships that are offered to international students:

Special Scholarships for International Students-

  • Yellowstone Scholarships- These are awarded to students who have a minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate programs and 3.0 for graduate programs. An award of 1,000 USD per semester is awarded to the student. Interested applicants must apply for scholarships before November 1 for the Spring semester and March 1 for the Fall semester.
  • Global Leadership Scholarships- 2 awards are awarded to the students. One to a student with financial need and the other to the one who helps promote internationalization efforts at MSUB. These scholarships are awarded to international students with a 3.0 GPA and with an F visa to the USA. Students must complete the scholarship application by February 1.
  • Outside International Scholarships- International applicants can apply for external or private international scholarships awarded by private benefactors in the USA or their home country.

General Scholarships-

  • MSU Billings Scholarships- These include various scholarships offered by MSUB. The award varies for these scholarships and depends on the student’s merit. The application opens on November 1. The priority deadline for the scholarship is February 1 every year while the general deadline is September 30.
  • Outside Scholarships

Work while you study

Work while studying is a program aimed at assisting students financially by providing part-time employment on-campus. The on-campus positions available for international students are hourly paid. There are a number of positions available for international students.

However, there are certain limitations to the positions available for international students and therefore students must contact the Office of International Studies for details.

The minimum hourly rate depends on the current Montana wage and the maximum hourly rate a student can get is 10 USD. A student is allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours a week.

Alumni Network

The members of the Montana State University Alumni Association are known as yellow jackets. Graduates from the Eastern Montana College as well as the MSU are a part of the alumni network. Several events of the alumni association are conducted round the year. The association recognizes graduates for excellence in academics every year by giving them the Outstanding Alumni Awards in the fall semester and organizes Golden Alumni Program during the spring semester.
