Binghamton University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Binghamton University assesses Indian applicants on academic transcripts, an English test score, standardised tests where required, and supporting documents.

Postgraduate requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 55% to 60% or CGPA 5.5 to 6.0/10 depending on department (recommended)
  • English test minimum: TOEFL iBT 4 (1-6 scale) / 80 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5 with no band below 5.0, PTE 53, or Duolingo 105
  • WES or credential-evaluation service report for the bachelor’s transcript
  • GRE or GMAT recommended for MBA and some engineering programmes; check departmental page

Undergraduate requirements:

  • Class 12 with 75% to 90% depending on programme (recommended); PCM required for engineering
  • English test minimum: TOEFL iBT 4 (1-6 scale) / 80 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5, PTE 53, or Duolingo 105
  • SAT or ACT is optional under the current test-optional policy

Key insight: The Duolingo English Test at 105 is accepted for both undergraduate and graduate admission at Binghamton University, and results come faster than IELTS or TOEFL for last-minute applicants.

Binghamton University Acceptance Rate 2027

Binghamton University reports a Fall 2026 acceptance rate of 38.6%, making it a moderately selective SUNY campus. The figure comes from the university’s Office of Institutional Research and represents the full first-year applicant pool.

Selectivity has tightened as SUNY Binghamton has climbed the US News public rankings over the past decade. For international applicants with strong academics and a valid English score, the admit rate typically sits close to the overall figure.

Reality check: A 38.6% acceptance rate is competitive but achievable for Indian applicants with a Class 12 score above 80% and a bachelor’s CGPA above 6.5/10; test scores near the minimum without strong academics will hurt.

Binghamton University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Binghamton University’s Class of 2024 outcomes show strong post-graduation activity, driven by proximity to New York City recruiters and consistent tech hiring for Watson College graduates.

  • Employment or further study within 6 months: 89.3%
  • Average starting salary: USD 72,438 (INR 69.4 lakh)
  • Median earnings 6 years post-enrolment: USD 61,621 (INR 59.0 lakh)
  • Top recruiters: Google, Amazon, Deloitte, PwC and JPMorgan Chase
  • Career support: The Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development runs employer treks to New York City each semester; F-1 graduates use OPT for up to 12 months, extended to 36 months for STEM degrees

Insider note: Indian MS Computer Science and MS Data Analytics graduates from Binghamton University see the strongest recruiter interest from banking and consulting firms hiring in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Binghamton University vs Peer Universities

The peer set below places Binghamton University alongside other Public Ivy and mid-tier SUNY campuses that Indian students shortlist for STEM master’s programmes at comparable fee levels.

Binghamton University stands out on cost-adjusted outcomes: an 89.3% early-career activity rate at SUNY tuition puts starting-salary-to-tuition ratios ahead of most private peers in the Northeast. The Public Ivy label and US News #34 public rank drive the shortlisting.

Binghamton University suits Indian graduate applicants who want a Public Ivy US degree with STEM OPT eligibility, without paying private-university tuition. The total two-year investment of INR 60 to 70 lakh compares well against a first-year average starting salary near INR 69.4 lakh, and the campus sits four hours from New York City for recruiter access.

It is not the right fit for applicants set on Ivy League branding or those who need scholarship support to cover most of tuition, since institutional aid for international master’s students is limited. In that case, a well-funded PhD track at a Big Ten public like Purdue University is a more realistic alternative to consider.

Binghamton University FAQs

Ques. What English test scores does Binghamton University accept for Indian applicants?

Ans. Binghamton University accepts TOEFL iBT at a minimum of 4 on the 1-6 scale (or 80 on the 0-120 legacy scale), IELTS at 6.5 with no band below 5.0, PTE at 53, TOEFL Essentials at 9, and Duolingo English Test at 105. All scores must be sent from the official test provider before the application deadline for the target intake.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at Binghamton University?

Ans. F-1 visa holders at Binghamton University can work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic session and up to 40 hours per week during winter and summer breaks. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training authorisation, usually available from the second semester and tied to a course or research role.

Ques. Does Binghamton University waive GRE or GMAT for Indian graduate applicants?

Ans. Many Binghamton University master’s programmes have moved to a test-optional or waiver-on-request model. Applicants with a bachelor’s CGPA above 7.5/10, relevant work experience or strong quantitative coursework can request a waiver during the Slate application. The MBA at the School of Management still recommends GMAT or GRE for competitive assistantship consideration.

Ques. How do Indian students verify their transcripts for Binghamton University?

Ans. Indian applicants send bachelor’s transcripts to WES for a course-by-course evaluation, which converts marks into a US 4.0 GPA. The WES report must be sent electronically to Binghamton University’s admissions office, not just uploaded as a PDF. Class 12 boards and Indian universities also need to send transcripts directly for verification in select graduate programmes.

Ques. What is the application fee at Binghamton University and are waivers available?

Ans. The Binghamton University graduate application fee is USD 95 (INR 9,100) for most international programmes. Fee waivers are extended selectively to applicants from partner programmes, US-based fairs and specific outreach lists. Indian applicants should check individual departmental pages, since waiver eligibility varies by college.

Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for Binghamton University?

Ans. SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda and non-banking lenders like Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing sanction loans for Binghamton University based on its US News #73 national ranking and Public Ivy status. Secured loans up to INR 1.5 crore are common; unsecured loans typically cap between INR 40 and 75 lakh depending on the co-applicant profile.

Ques. Can dependents accompany Indian students to Binghamton University on an F-2 visa?

Ans. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of F-1 students at Binghamton University are eligible for the F-2 dependent visa. F-2 spouses cannot work in the US, though they can enrol in part-time study. Financial documents must show additional funds of roughly USD 6,000 per dependent per year during the I-20 application.

Ques. How does the conditional admission pathway work at Binghamton University?

Ans. Indian applicants who meet academic requirements but fall short of the English test minimum can receive a conditional offer paired with the Binghamton University English Language Institute pathway. Students complete an intensive English programme and progress to full degree status once they clear the required proficiency level, without needing to reapply for admission.

  • There are 3 campuses: Vestal Campus in Vestal, Health Science Campus in Johnson City and UDC Campus in Binghamton Downtown
  • All facilities a university has library, sports, gym, pools, and a hospital.
  • Spring Fling and U-Fest are the major ones. they are like traditions with concerts, parties, nightlife, etc.
  • I did not participate in other activities but the one i did was the Hack BU Hackathon organised by the student union, where you design a product and then pitch it. The hackathon ran for a long number of hours where you could see ideas coming to life.

Fees

  • The total cost for 2 year or complete course was $44,600, out of which $28,400 was for Tuition and Fees and $16,200 was for living expenses
  • It was charged semester-wise based on how many courses I enrolled in.
  • It was around $600 - $700 per month, which include around $400 rent, $10 wifi, and the remaining groceries.
  • Transportation cost was around $100 per semester, which included bus service, shuttle service, etc.

  • Campuses do have a buzz on most of the weekends. and there are a lot of organisations/clubs that organise festivals and parties. Spring fling which is organised every spring semester. There are 2 campuses. One is in Vestal (main), and the other is in downtown Binghamton.
  • Every weekend night there is a movie scheduled (kind of old, not new). Free food is available. Many tech clubs and coding clubs are there. Indian festivals like Holi and Ganesh festivals are celebrated.

Fees

  • Per semester I was charged USD 14000 considering I chose 3 courses. Fees can be calculated/credited by course. USD 1100~1200/credit and USD ~4500/course. Total cost was around ~45000 USD. University has transportation (free), rent (~500/month), groceries (~100-200/month) and other miscellaneous costs (~100 USD).
  • It differs from person to person, as even 4 courses could be taken instead of 3 per semester in order to manage the master's journey, subject to the advisor's approval.

  • University had 2 campuses, as per my knowledge. Main campus (University union) & pharmacy campus
  • Within the main campus, where most of the things are. There is a separate building for the library where students can study, refer to reference books and do many more things. There are separate sports facility east gym and west gym. There are ample on-campus student accommodations where most of the Undergraduate students live.
  • There is binghamton stadium known as the event centre, where most of the interstate, interuniversity and other level matches happen.

Fees

  • Here, usually the fees is semester-wise but the post-calculation average cost per credit is around $1200
  • Breakdown:
    • Per Semester - 12 credits (4 courses) = $14,400 + $1,400 (insurance) = $15,800
    • Fees are Semester-wise
  • Monthly cost of living
    • Rent – $500 to $550 (private room) with shared kitchen, washroom and other spaces of the house
    • Food & Grocery – $200 to $250

  • There are 3 campuses.
  • Facilities : The majority of events take place on the main campus only, like sports. Almost all the sports are played here, and all kinds of cultural fests are hosted every now and then. Medical services are in a different campus, which is specifically dedicated to that only, but all campuses have their first aid and emergency availability.
  • Some popular events are basketball matches, soccer matches, music fests, welcoming events, Chinese new year, Christmas etc.

Fees

  • Breakdown of fees : Tuition is approximately 36 lakhs. No other charges are there, and insurance is also included in that.
  • Fees charged : Fees are charged semester-wise according to the number of credits you are taking. Also, you get an option to pay the fees in installments.
  • Monthly expenses, including everything from housing to groceries, go up to 600-650 USD. It also depends on your lifestyle.

  •  My college has only one campus at the Vestal, NY
  • The campus has variety of facilities such as library providing books, study places, and computers to work and sports facilities like east gym where there are basket ball courts, swimming, badminton and west gym has a volleyball court, table tennis area etc
  • There are many events taking place in our college like NCAA and hosts various sports like volleyball, soccer and swimming in Fall, Basketball during winter to spring and baseball, softball, lacrosse, wrestling during spring

Fees

  • The tuition is charged as $1000 for each credit. And each subject/class is of 3 credits and the termination project is of 1 credit. We have to complete a total of 31 credits to complete the course implying we need to register at least 10 classes and a termination project/thesis. I have registered for 3 classes in the first semester, 4 in 2nd, 3 classes in 3rd semester and have completed my termination project in 4th semester.
  • The tuition fees is charged semester-wise. The first two semesters are charged with a mandatory minimum fees of 4 classes even though we take only 3 classes in any of the semester.
  • The transportation is included in the fees. Regarding monthly expenses, I used to live off-campus which costed me a monthly rent of $425 including all utilities and maybe a $150 - $200 of food expenses per month totaling an estimated $625 per month or might be more as I have never actually done a calculation

Ques. Which is better for an MS in CS, Suny Binghamton or Florida State University?

● Top Answer By Anil Nadadur on 11 Jan 21

Ans. Both SUNY Binghamton and FSU are highly ranked in terms of salary as per PayScale College Salary Reports. They are ranked well by other reports like emolument as well so you can rest assured about their employment reports. On average, their graduates earn 103,000-113,000 USD . Still, you may have some requirements or reasons of your own to consider so here is a rough comparison of both the universities for their MS in Computer Science: Please note that the salary mentioned is sector wise and it will vary with the choice of your major. Other factors like scholarships, tuition cost, location, residence and expenses will play a major role in your choice.  SUNY Binghamton has an edge over FSU because of: Ease of admission indicated by its higher acceptance rate Average Salary of its CS graduates Overall graduation rate More Scholarship opportunities ranging from 1,000 USD upto 20,000 USD More internships and job opportunities due to its location as compared to a rather isolated location of Florida State University Nevertheless, it can be said that while all both are in the same league, SUNY Binghamton is slightly better in terms of opportunities and average starting salaries.Read more
