University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants must meet school-specific academic minimums along with the university-wide English proficiency and credential verification requirements set by the Graduate School and Undergraduate Admissions offices.
Postgraduate applicants:
- Bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended) from a UGC-recognised university; competitive programmes such as MS Computer Science and MA Economics expect 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended)
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90 (legacy 0-120 scale) or 5 (new 1-6 band scale, from 26 January 2026), IELTS Academic 7.0, or Duolingo English Test 110, as per the UNC Graduate School published minimums
- Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation of Indian bachelor’s transcripts sent directly to UNC
- GRE or GMAT required for the Kenan-Flagler MBA, Master of Accounting, MA Economics and most PhD tracks; waived at some Gillings and Graduate School programmes for the 2027 cycle
Undergraduate applicants:
- Class 12 with 80% or above from CBSE, ICSE or a State Board (recommended threshold; UNC does not publish an Indian-specific minimum)
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 100 (legacy) or 5 (new scale, from 21 January 2026), IELTS 7.5, Duolingo 130, or Cambridge C1 Advanced 185 as strong-applicant benchmarks published by UNC Undergraduate Admissions
- SAT 930+ or ACT 17+ required only when weighted GPA falls below 2.8 on a 4.0 scale; optional above that threshold for applicants entering in 2026-2027 and beyond
Key insight: UNC does not run a formal IELTS waiver programme, but applicants who completed Class 12 in an all-English-medium school with three or more years of English-language instruction may petition the Graduate School for a review before submitting a score.
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Acceptance Rate 2027
UNC Chapel Hill admitted 19% of applicants for the Fall 2026 cycle, per the university’s most recent published admissions data. The rate reflects an application pool of roughly 60,000 candidates for approximately 4,600 seats in the entering first-year class.
International applicants face the same admit standard as domestic candidates on the academic side, with credential verification and English proficiency treated as threshold requirements before academic review.
Reality check: Indian applicants targeting UNC Chapel Hill should treat a Class 12 average of 90% and IELTS 7.5 as competitive floors rather than ceilings, since strong candidates cluster well above the published minimums.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill vs Peer Universities
The peers below sit in the same US public and southern private research tier as UNC Chapel Hill in the QS 2027 and Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 tables, with average PG cost bands drawn from each university’s cashier schedule.
| University | QS World 2027 | CD Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee ($) | Avg Annual PG Fee (₹ Lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UNC Chapel Hill | #158 | #58 of 824 | $32,000 (median band) | ₹30.6 Lakh | Oldest US public research; strongest in public health and MBA |
| University of Virginia | #106 | NA | $35,000 (market median) | ₹33.5 Lakh | Higher QS position; Darden MBA and law-school prestige |
| University of Michigan Ann Arbor | #44 | NA | $55,000 (market median) | ₹52.7 Lakh | Top-50 QS; broader engineering scale |
| Duke University | #52 | NA | $65,000 (market median) | ₹62.2 Lakh | Private neighbour; Robertson Scholars shared network |
| North Carolina State University | #338 | NA | $30,000 (market median) | ₹28.7 Lakh | Same city region; STEM-heavy portfolio at a lower price band |
UNC Chapel Hill sits at the intersection of research strength and public-university tuition, with THE and ARWU ranks that outperform its QS position by a wide margin. For Indian applicants weighing prestige against cost, UNC delivers roughly half the total PG fee of Duke or Michigan while keeping graduates competitive for the same recruiter sectors.
UNC Chapel Hill suits Indian applicants targeting a top-100 THE research university at public-tier tuition, with a two-year MS investment near ₹60 Lakh set against a median $72,000 starting salary. The Kenan-Flagler MBA holds its own alongside top MBA universities in USA, and the STEM OPT extension adds a substantial post-study work runway for eligible science and computing graduates.
It is not the right pick if you need a QS top-100 stamp for lender eligibility, or if you cannot self-fund the first year, since international undergraduate aid is minimal and merit fellowships remain highly competitive. A closer QS-ranked alternative in the region is Duke University at private-tier tuition, or NC State University for STEM-heavy programmes at a lower price band.

- Athletics, proximity to home, weather in chapel hill, prestige and name recognition.
Overview
It has been great going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The campus culture is incredible. Students tend to have a lot of school spirit and tend to look out for one another. The faculty are supportive, but some programs have large class sizes. There is good name recognition and good employment prospects post graduation. Chapel Hill is a wonderful place to live, with great weather and a walkable environment.
Campus Life
Great sports facilities, large (but old) libraries, decent Wi-Fi around campus, lots of student run organizations because it is a big school, great research facilities.
Overview
Beautiful school, well known for high academics. Always been a fan of athletics. Diverse campus and high achieving faculty. Great location and a great college town. I have wanted to go here since I was four.
Fees
School is very expensive and they give out very little financial aid. I was offered some loans and work-study that do not total to my Estimated Family Contribution given to me when I filled out my FAFSA.
Overview
Close to home, a great reputation, hard to get into, really good public policy program, in-state tuition, my friends all went there, unc basketball!!!!, it?s absolutely beautiful, good academics and social stuff.
Fees
Paid through the university, you pay for housing, food, tuition, and other fees include gym, grounds, sports stuff.
Overview
It had a strong reputation for my major and was well known throughout the state. The name is very recognizable throughout the country and has held it?s reputation for a very long time period. The college was also close to home making it easy to visit family often and commute.
Fees
My tuition was upfront when I applied and I now cover other fees such as food, books, and housing for myself.
Overview
It's an in-state school, so it was within my price range, and it's a very prestigious school. It gave me the best value for my education, and it's close to home. I looked at out of state schools, and the quality of education was about the same for double the price.
Fees
There's a fee for everything, from your meal plan to LFIT. But since it's an in-state school, it's a better deal than a private school.
