University of Virginia Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
The University of Virginia admission requirements sit at the higher end for US publics, with test minimums and academic thresholds enforced at the school level.
PG Requirements at the University of Virginia
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree from a UGC-recognised Indian university with a minimum 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended). Darden MBA and MS Business Analytics typically expect 70%+
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90 overall (legacy 0-120 scale, taken before 21 January 2026) with section minimums of 22 speaking, 22 writing, 23 reading, 23 listening; OR TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall (new 1-6 scale, taken on or after 21 January 2026) with section minimums of 4 speaking, 4.5 writing, 4.5 reading, 5 listening. IELTS minimum 7.0; MS Business Analytics requires IELTS 7.5 or TOEFL iBT 100. Duolingo English Test (DET) accepted at Graduate School discretion
- Standardised tests: GRE required at most STEM master’s; GMAT or GRE for Darden MBA; LSAT for LL.M. (verify at law.virginia.edu)
- Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation for transcripts issued outside the US
UG Requirements at the University of Virginia
- Academic: Class 12 from CBSE, ISC or a state board with 85% or higher (recommended); predicted grades accepted for Indian applicants still in Class 12
- English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS or DET; SAT/ACT optional under UVA’s test-optional policy through Fall 2027 (verify at admission.virginia.edu)
Key insight: UVA waives the English test requirement for applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree at an institution where English is the sole medium of instruction, but requires an official medium-of-instruction letter from the Registrar rather than a self-declaration.
University of Virginia Acceptance Rate 2027
The University of Virginia acceptance rate for the Class of 2030 was 12.53% overall, with the university admitting 10,287 students from a record 82,118 applications, as per UVA Admission. The rate for out-of-state applicants was materially tighter at 10%, with just 6.97% admitted in Regular Decision.
| Cycle | Overall Acceptance Rate | Out-of-State Trend |
|---|---|---|
| Class of 2030 (Fall 2026 entry) | 12.53% | 10% overall; 6.97% Regular Decision |
| Class of 2029 (Fall 2025 entry) | 16-17% (estimated) | Applications rose 27.4% year on year |
UVA is legally required to maintain roughly two-thirds Virginia-resident enrolment at the undergraduate level, which mathematically compresses the out-of-state rate. Graduate admission rates vary sharply by school and are not published centrally.
Reality check: Indian applicants competing for undergraduate seats are pooled with all international out-of-state applicants, so the working assumption should be a sub-10% chance. Graduate STEM applicants face materially better odds at the master’s level, though Darden and Law remain competitive.

University of Virginia Campus, Facilities and Student Life
The University of Virginia campus, known as Grounds, spans 1,682 acres in Charlottesville. The core Academical Village, designed by Thomas Jefferson, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Location and transport: Charlottesville is a 2-hour drive from Washington DC; the free University Transit Service (UTS) covers all major Grounds routes
- Housing: First-year undergraduate housing is guaranteed on-Grounds; graduate students typically rent off-Grounds at $1,000-$1,400 per month for a shared apartment
- Facilities: Alderman Library holds over 5 million volumes; the John Paul Jones Arena and Aquatic and Fitness Center serve student athletics and recreation
- Indian community: The Indian Student Association and Hindu Student Council host Diwali and Holi celebrations; SAAS and Darden India Club run alumni-mentoring for graduate students
What Indian students say: Grounds is quieter than a big-city campus, which suits STEM master’s students on tight coursework schedules; the trade-off is fewer weekend options without a car. Darden and Law students note the residential-college feel makes cohort networking easier than at larger publics.
University of Virginia Scholarships 2027

| Ellen Bayard Weedon Travel Grant | Research travel | Verify at internationalcenter.virginia.edu | Graduate research on East Asia | Verify at internationalcenter.virginia.edu |
[Source: UVA International Center; UVA Darden Financial Aid]
Planning note: UVA does not meet full financial need for international applicants, so external funding from the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, JN Tata Endowment or a US education loan usually covers the remaining gap. Indian applicants should map external scholarship deadlines to the Round 1 or January priority window.

University of Virginia Rankings 2027
The strongest University of Virginia rankings position sits with US News, which places UVA at #24 among US National Universities and #4 among top public universities in its 2026 edition. QS lifted UVA from #297 in 2025 to #268 in the 2027 edition, reversing a two-year slide.

At the subject level, UVA School of Law is ranked #18 globally by ARWU 2025 and #36 by THE World Subject Rankings 2026. The Darden MBA holds #19 globally and #9 in the USA in the Financial Times Global MBA 2026, up one place from 2025.
Key insight: UVA’s US News national rank of #24 carries more weight with US employers than its QS World position, since national rankings drive on-campus recruiting shortlists. For Indian applicants planning to work in the US post-graduation, the Darden FT #9 and Law ARWU #18 positions are the strongest hiring signals.

University of Virginia Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
The University of Virginia’s career outcomes are anchored by the Darden School of Business and the School of Law, both of which publish employment data on par with top-tier US private peers.
- Darden MBA employment (within 3 months): 93%+ (market median per FT Global MBA 2026)
- Darden MBA median base salary: $175,000 (₹167.8 lakh) plus $40,000 signing bonus (market median per FT Global MBA 2026)
- Top hiring sectors: Consulting (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), Investment Banking (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan), Technology (Amazon, Microsoft), Consumer (Deloitte)
- MS Computer Science and MS Data Science outcomes: Median starting salary $110,000-$130,000 (₹105-125 lakh) in software and data roles (market median)
- Post-study work visa: F-1 graduates get 12 months of OPT; STEM designated master’s programmes (including MS CS, MS Data Science) qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension
Insider note: Darden and the School of Law recruit heavily from Indian talent, with Indian alumni represented at every major US consulting and legal firm. STEM master’s placement leans toward East Coast tech hubs (Washington DC, New York), with a smaller Silicon Valley pipeline.
University of Virginia vs Peer Universities
The comparison set below places UVA against three US public flagships and one private peer, using QS World 2027 positions and out-of-state master’s tuition as the baseline.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Virginia | #268 | $41,124 (MS CS) | 39.4 lakh | Strongest US National rank in the Southeast public tier |
| University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill | #84 (verify) | $40,000 (estimated) | 38.4 lakh | Kenan-Flagler MBA is the direct Darden competitor |
| Georgia Institute of Technology | #77 (verify) | $32,000 (estimated) | 30.7 lakh | Best-in-class MS Computer Science and OMSCS |
| Duke University | #56 (verify) | $66,000 (estimated) | 63.3 lakh | Fuqua MBA and stronger private-sector brand recall |
| University of Michigan Ann Arbor | #44 (verify) | $56,000 (estimated) | 53.7 lakh | Larger cohort scale and stronger Midwest recruiting pipeline |
[Source: QS World University Rankings 2027; institutional tuition pages]
UVA differentiates on cohort scale, residential experience and the Darden case-method MBA. The trade-off against Georgia Tech and Michigan is a lower QS World rank; the trade-off against Duke is a materially lower sticker price.
The University of Virginia is the right fit for an Indian applicant seeking a US public flagship with strong law, MBA and STEM master’s placement, where the total investment of $130,000-$180,000 (₹125-172 lakh) for a master’s is validated by a median post-MBA salary of $175,000 (₹167.8 lakh) and the STEM OPT pathway to US employment through the MS in USA route. Its US News #24 national position and Darden FT #9 USA rank carry more weight with US on-campus recruiters than its global QS position suggests.
It is a weaker fit for applicants who need meet-full-need financial aid, since UVA does not meet full need for international students, or for candidates focused purely on QS World ranks over US employer recognition. The University of Michigan Ann Arbor is a realistic alternative that offers a higher QS World position with a similarly strong US employer brand.
University of Virginia FAQs
Ques. Which UVA master’s programmes qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
Ans. The MS in Computer Science, MS in Data Science, MS in Systems Engineering and most Graduate School of Engineering master’s degrees are STEM-designated CIP codes at UVA. Graduates receive 12 months of standard OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving a total of 36 months of US work authorisation on the F-1 visa. The Darden MBA and LL.M. are not STEM-designated and qualify for standard 12-month OPT only.
Ques. Can Indian students waive the TOEFL requirement at the University of Virginia?
Ans. UVA waives the English test requirement for applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree at an institution where English is the sole medium of instruction. Indian applicants must submit an official medium-of-instruction letter from the Registrar on university letterhead, not a self-declaration or a college-level letter. Applicants from institutions with English coursework but native-language medium do not qualify for the waiver.
Ques. Does the University of Virginia require GRE for STEM master’s programmes?
Ans. Most STEM master’s programmes at the School of Engineering and Applied Science require or strongly recommend the GRE, though several departments have moved to test-optional or waiver-with-cause policies post-2022. MS Computer Science and MS Data Science accept GRE-optional applications with a strong undergraduate GPA above 8.0/10 and quantitative coursework. Applicants should check the individual department page before deciding to skip the GRE.
Ques. How much financial proof does an Indian student need for the UVA I-20?
Ans. UVA requires financial documentation covering one full academic year of the cost of attendance stated on the offer letter, typically $65,000-$125,000 (₹62-120 lakh) depending on programme. Acceptable proof includes bank statements dated within six months, sanctioned education-loan letters from Indian banks or NBFCs, and sponsor affidavits. The I-20 is issued only after financial documents clear ISO review, so Indian applicants should assemble the file within two weeks of admission.
Ques. What are the part-time work rules for Indian students at UVA?
Ans. F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on-Grounds during the semester and full-time during official breaks. On-Grounds jobs cover dining, library, research assistantships and departmental office roles. Off-Grounds work requires Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorisation tied to an academic internship or Optional Practical Training (OPT) post-degree. UVA’s International Studies Office (ISO) handles both authorisations.
Ques. What is the application fee at UVA and can it be waived?
Ans. The graduate application fee at UVA is $85 for most programmes and $250 for the Darden MBA. Fee waivers are available for applicants who demonstrate financial hardship, participated in eligible pipeline programmes (McNair Scholars, LSAMP, Fulbright) or attended a UVA recruitment event. Darden waives the fee for military applicants, current or former Peace Corps volunteers and select international partner programme candidates. Indian applicants should request the waiver before submitting the application.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans recognised by UVA?
Ans. UVA accepts sanctioned loan letters from all major Indian public-sector banks (SBI, Bank of Baroda, PNB, Canara), private banks (HDFC Credila, ICICI, Axis) and NBFCs (Avanse, InCred, Auxilo). Most Indian lenders classify UVA as a Tier-1 US institution, which typically qualifies borrowers for higher loan ceilings up to INR 1.5 crore and lower collateral requirements. The sanctioned loan letter must reach UVA ISO before the I-20 is issued.
Ques. Does UVA offer scholarships specifically for Indian students?
Ans. UVA does not run an India-nationality-only scholarship, but Indian applicants are strong candidates for merit-based awards at the Darden School (Worldwide Scholarship Program), the School of Law (Dean’s Scholarship) and the School of Engineering (Graduate Assistantships). External India-linked funding through the JN Tata Endowment, Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation and KC Mahindra Scholarship stacks with UVA merit awards. Assistantships covering full tuition plus a stipend are the strongest funding route for PhD applicants.
