University of Illinois Chicago Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants to UIC must meet academic, English and credential requirements set by each program and the Office of International Services.
- PG academic: Bachelor’s degree with minimum 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended for business masters); 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended for engineering and computer science masters)
- English test (PG): TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, PTE 54 or Duolingo 130
- Credential verification: UIC evaluates Indian transcripts directly; WES/ECE not required for most programs
- Standardised tests: GRE waived for most masters; MBA does not require GMAT for Flex MBA candidates with 5+ years work
- UG academic: Class 12 with minimum 70% average from CBSE, ISC or state boards (recommended)
- English test (UG): TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, PTE 54 or Duolingo 120
- English waiver: SAT ERW 570+, ACT English 24+, AP English 4+ or IB English 5+ replaces the language test
Key insight: UIC does not accept medium-of-instruction letters alone as an English waiver. Indian applicants who studied in English-medium schools still need a valid TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo score unless they qualify through SAT, ACT, AP or IB thresholds.
University of Illinois Chicago Acceptance Rate 2027
UIC’s most recent third-party acceptance rate estimate is 77.35% (estimated). UIC does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate, so the figure is derived from admissions and enrolment data and reflects overall UG admissions selectivity.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 cycle | 77.35% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2024 cycle | 78.5% (estimated) | Slight decline |
Graduate admissions are department-specific and typically stricter than the university-wide UG rate. MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics and PhD Computer Science admit substantially fewer applicants due to program capacity.
Reality check: A 77% headline rate is misleading for Indian STEM applicants. MS Computer Science and PhD programs run competitive review with far lower effective admit rates, and CGPA 6.5+, GRE 315+ and a research or industry project meaningfully lift chances.
UIC Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students
The total annual cost for a UIC international master's student is approximately USD 55,000 to 65,000 (INR 52.5 to 62.0 lakh), combining tuition, mandatory fees and living expenses in Chicago.
UIC Tuition Fees for Indian Students 2026-2027
| Level | Annual Range (USD) | Annual Range (INR lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 35,596 to 38,396 | 33.9 to 36.6 lakh |
| Graduate (general masters) | 33,530 | 32.0 lakh |
| Graduate (Engineering MS) | 38,478 | 36.7 lakh |
| Graduate (MBA and business MS) | 43,530 | 41.5 lakh |
Fees above reflect academic year 2026-2027 non-resident international rates published by UIC Admissions.
Monthly Cost of Living in Chicago for Indian Students
| Category | Monthly (USD) | Monthly (INR) |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (shared) | 900 to 1,200 | 85,833 to 1,14,444 |
| Food and groceries | 400 to 500 | 38,148 to 47,685 |
| Transportation (CTA U-Pass) | Included in student fee | Included |
| Books and supplies | 100 | 9,537 |
| Personal and health | 200 to 300 | 19,074 to 28,611 |
| Total monthly | 1,600 to 2,100 | 1,52,592 to 2,00,277 |
| Total annual (9-month academic) | 14,400 to 18,900 | 13.7 to 18.0 lakh |
[Source: UIC Office of International Services estimated expenses]
Insider note: UIC students receive the CTA U-Pass with tuition, giving unlimited rides on Chicago buses and the L train. Living in the West Loop, Little Italy or Pilsen keeps rent between USD 900 and 1,100 per month for a shared apartment, versus USD 1,500+ for downtown Loop studios.

University of Illinois Chicago Campus, Facilities and Student Life
UIC’s East and West campuses sit in the West Loop of Chicago, walking distance from downtown Loop and served directly by the CTA Blue Line and Pink Line.
- Location: Halsted Street corridor, West Loop, 1.5 km from Chicago Loop; CTA Blue Line, Pink Line and multiple bus routes on campus
- Housing: On-campus residence halls cost USD 12,500 to 16,000/year (INR 11.9 to 15.3 lakh); off-campus shared apartments in Pilsen, Little Italy and University Village at USD 900 to 1,200/month
- Facilities: Richard J. Daley Library, Student Center East and West, UIC Recreation Facility with a 6-lane pool, and one of the largest US medical campuses on the West Side
- Indian community: Active Indian Students Association, Diwali and Holi celebrations, Telugu and Tamil student groups, three temples within 30 minutes by CTA
What Indian students say: UIC’s West Loop location gives cheaper rent than Loyola or DePaul while staying inside downtown Chicago. Winter is brutal from December to February, and the on-campus recreation gym and library become primary hangouts during peak cold weeks.
University of Illinois Chicago Scholarships
UIC offers institutional scholarships across UG and PG levels, plus fully-funded PhD packages. Fewer awards target international students specifically, and most institutional aid is merit-based.
| Scholarship | Type | Award value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PhD Guaranteed Funding | Merit | Full tuition waiver and stipend for 5 years | Admitted PhD students | 15 December 2026 (CS priority) |
| Chancellor’s Scholarship | Merit | Up to USD 8,000/year (INR 7.6 lakh) | First-year admits, high academic profile | 2 November 2026 (EA priority) |
| UIC Global Access | Need and Merit | Partial tuition support | International UG applicants | Rolling, tied to admission |
| Graduate College Fellowships | Merit | Tuition waiver and stipend | Nominated PhD candidates | Nominated via department |
| Departmental TA/RA | Merit | Tuition waiver and monthly stipend | MS and PhD in Engineering, CS, Sciences | Rolling, tied to admission |
Planning note: Indian MS applicants should submit early and reach out directly to potential faculty advisors for RA positions. Departmental funding is limited and prioritised for PhD tracks, so masters students typically self-fund tuition and offset through on-campus employment (up to 20 hours/week on F-1).

University of Illinois Chicago Rankings 2027
UIC’s strongest recognition sits in US News, which places it at #80 tied among National Universities in the 2025-2026 edition, while its QS World rank moved from #334 in 2026 to #370 in 2027.
| Ranking Body | Latest Edition | Previous Edition | Two Editions Back |
|---|---|---|---|
| QS World | 2027: #370 | 2026: #334 | 2025: #365 |
| THE World | 2026: #201 | 2025: #201 | 2024: #201 |

[Source: QS, THE, US News]
UIC is not currently catalogued in the Collegedunia Study Abroad USA index for ID 1131, and no unified ARWU Shanghai global rank is published for the 2025 edition.
Key insight: UIC’s US News national tier at #80 places it inside the Public Ivy adjacent tier, which many US employers weight highly. QS and THE numbers tell a different story because they weight research reputation and citations, where UIC ranks lower than its US employment recognition.

FAQs
Ques. Does UIC waive the GRE for MS Computer Science applicants?
Ans. UIC does not require the GRE for MS Computer Science applications starting Fall 2027, and most engineering and business masters programs have made the GRE optional. Applicants with a strong CGPA above 7.5/10, prior research or industry experience, or an accredited Indian BTech typically apply without submitting scores. GRE scores are still recommended for candidates from tier-3 undergraduate institutions to strengthen their profile for admission and RA/TA consideration.
Ques. What is the application fee for UIC international students?
Ans. UIC charges international undergraduate applicants a total of USD 170 (INR 16,213), consisting of a USD 70 application fee and a USD 100 international credential evaluation fee. International graduate applicants pay a total of USD 180 (INR 17,167), which includes an USD 80 application fee and the USD 100 credential evaluation. PhD Computer Science applicants who apply before 15 December 2026 receive a reduced fee of USD 100.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time at UIC on F-1 visa?
Ans. F-1 students at UIC can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic semester, and up to 40 hours per week during official breaks. On-campus jobs include library assistant, teaching assistant, research assistant, dining services and the UIC Recreation Center. After the first academic year, students become eligible for off-campus Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for approved internships and Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for UIC students?
Ans. UIC is recognised by major Indian public and private lenders, including SBI (Global Ed-Vantage up to INR 1.5 crore), HDFC Credila, Avanse Financial, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Prodigy Finance for non-collateral loans. Public sector banks require collateral for loan amounts above INR 40 lakh, while NBFC lenders like HDFC Credila and Avanse offer collateral-free options up to INR 50 lakh at higher interest rates.
Ques. Does UIC accept 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for masters admission?
Ans. UIC accepts 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for most masters admissions, provided the degree is from a UGC-recognised university and completed with a strong academic record. The Graduate College evaluates each Indian transcript directly through its International Admissions office. Some highly competitive programs such as MS Computer Science and PhD tracks may recommend an additional year of coursework or a completed masters for candidates from 3-year non-honours streams.
Ques. What documents do Indian applicants need for the UIC F-1 visa?
Ans. Indian applicants need the UIC I-20, valid passport, admission letter, SEVIS I-901 fee receipt, DS-160 confirmation and a bank statement showing at least USD 55,000 to 65,000 in liquid funds for the first year. Additional documents include the sponsor affidavit, sponsor income proof, education transcripts, standardised test scores and the F-1 visa fee (MRV) receipt. UIC requires financial documents dated within 6 months of the I-20 issue date.
Ques. Is UIC Flex MBA STEM-designated for OPT extension?
Ans. Yes, the UIC Liautaud Flex MBA is STEM-designated as a Management Science program, making Indian graduates eligible for the 24-month OPT STEM extension on top of the initial 12-month OPT period. This total 36-month work authorisation window allows graduates to sponsor H-1B applications across three lottery cycles. Applicants must select the STEM-eligible track and complete the required quantitative concentration to qualify for the extension.
Ques. How does UIC compare to University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for Indian students?
Ans. UIC sits in downtown Chicago with strong access to internships at tech and finance employers, while University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign ranks higher globally (QS #69 versus UIC #370) but operates from a small college town. UIC offers lower cost of living relative to Chicago’s job market opportunities, while UIUC delivers stronger research prestige and higher median starting salaries in engineering and CS. Indian applicants prioritising city career networks lean UIC; those prioritising research reputation lean UIUC.

- The research is perfect here
- The classrooms are having the best equipments
- The professors are the most helpful
Dislikes
- The college itself is separated and it's huge [so for a few days navigations becomes hard]
- It's very cold, unless you are particularly equipped with good jackets,
- TA is not given in the first semester unlike other colleges [you need to earn it by getting 4 for the first 2 semesters]
Campus Life
- The college has many campuses; our college in particular is widely spread and is not in one particular area, so sometimes you would have classes in two different campuses, but they are not extremely far away; they would all be in the same region, so they should be within walking distance.
- We have all the facilities like a library, sports facilities and medical services. In fact, we have the best medical service because our college also has a special medical campus for studies so we have very good support in terms of medical services and we also have the insurance covered by the UIC medical campus and hence the cost is much lower than what is provided outside.
- There are many campus clubs I am not particularly participating so I have minimal idea on that front. There would be some campus festivals, like the fall party at the start when the college begins, and some more. I am not particularly active in the festivals.
- You can participate in any of the extracurricular activities. Since I did not have the time to do that, I have not enquired about this aspect, but I can say that the gym facility here is outstanding. You would also have boxing classes, zumba classes, wall climbing and everything covered in our UIC sports fees.
Fees
- Out-of-state tuition for full-time (12+ credit hours) graduate students at UIC for the Computer Science program is set for a gross tuition of $13,163, a tuition differential of $2,357, mandatory graduate fees of nearly $1,697, and assessments of $623. This adds up to an estimated total semester cost of $17,840. but we do not exactly do 12 credits every semester so my first semester was 3 courses, which is 12 credits then I paid this amount. Later I only took 2 courses per semester since I took an advanced course; then it cost me around $13,000. my total cost through my entire master's was around $45,000.
- The fee is charged semester wise and you also have a scheme to pay it like an EMI in periods. Generally, students who get the GA or TA would prefer paying it themselves in the EMI method so the fee for the semester is breakdown into 4 months and should be paid monthly
- My monthly expense is around 1000 dollars: rent is 500 dollars for a very small private room; electricity and gas are 150 to 250; in winter, it is high due to the heater; and miscellaneous around 250 to 300, like groceries and food I eat outside.
Likes
- Plenty of opportunities for funding through assistantships(GA,RA,TA). Plenty of chances in minimum wage part time opportunities.
- Top class infrastructure with many facilities and the urban setting is highly beneficial.
- Good range of courses and professors(must be chosen properly).
Dislikes
- The campus is very decentralized and architecture is not really fancy as some college (both of the factors doesn't effect functionality/flexibility).
- Moderately high fee when landed in internship.
- Not very great efforts/opportunities for placements.
Campus Life
- We have many campuses, mainly west (for medical studies) and east for engineering. There is also a law college in the downtown.
- Library (2 of them west, east), gym (2 of them), sleeping pods, popup pantry (free groceries), night ride (free rides after 10 PM), college students, lot of study areas (literally every area is a study area), good wifi, many free events, career services, wellness center, commuter centre, etc.
- Thanksgiving clubs are mostly sports-related, and basketball is top-class and very popular.

- Great Campus and Gym. The recreation facility is really nice I spend a lot of time playing badminton .
- The commute is really easy the way the college is built the bus is literally at every corner.
- The infrastructure is really modern and futuristic it would be like you are in a movie.
Dislikes
- Not something about the university but about Chicago its just too cold.
- The career fairs are too crowded.
- The university merchandise is too expensive.
Campus Life
- UIC is taking us to Missouri free of charge to watch our basketball team play other teams. All hotel and bus rides are paid for so that speaks loads about how much they care for their students well-being.
- They have a club for everything from archery to swimming; everything is covered. A library, sports facility, badminton court, the best gym , also UIC has a medical center on the campus itself.
- I am the Vice President of the Computer Science Graduate Association. I deal with students in CS who come in to UIC as new students. I help with placements, seminars with people who have landed amazing jobs and just fun activities all year around. So if you are a CS student and are proactive, there is a high chance we will bump into each other.

- The subjects offered such as cybersecurity, global logistics, revenue management in my course were very versatile. My class strength was diverse in terms of age group, experience and home country. UIC offered jobs with one of the best stipend for GA and TA ($23.6) which is one of the best in public universities.
- I had an experience in supply chain and this course's curriculum was a perfect blend of supply chain and operations management. I chose this course and UIC because its a public university and has less fees as compared to other universities I got admit to.
Dislikes
- My first semester(spring 2021) was 100% online due to covid. But, when there was a choice between the online and offline, most of the US students chose online classes. And due to the majority choice, professors taught a few classes online.
Overview
The experience at UIC was great. The course structure and prof and especially part time job opportunities are good. Chicago is a place where commute is easier in the city and UIC is also close to downtown. Facilities like night ride(free rides for UIC students post 11pm, 24*7 library during exam times, Early morning gym timings) are very useful for international students.
Campus Life
UIC has different clubs(I was not a part of any). Most of the bachelor's course students join these clubs. They organize events on Indian festivals as well. UIC organizes dinner during exam times, special events for international students, job and career fairs. The classes are well equipped with echo 360, projector screens etc, library with macbooks , a very big gym etc.
Overview
I chose this program because it is one of the most highly ranked programs in the field of health economics and outcomes research. The faculty members are widely recognized both nationally and internationally. Also, previous students from my undergrad college had attended this program and shared their positive experiences and highly recommended joining it.
Campus Life
There are Indian undergraduate and graduate student associations on campus that regularly hold events like Indian festivals, or other informal gatherings. There are two huge libraries and gyms on the east and west side of campus respectively. Wifi is available throughout campus and the university also provides access to eduroam which is a wifi network that can be accessed while on campus of other academic institutions
Overview
My fascination with science propelled me to choose Biotechnology for my under graduation. I decided to further study this course in detail by majoring in the medicinal side of biotechnology. I then started hunting for MS in Medical Biotechnology which was offered only by a few universities in the United States and the University of Illinois at Chicago was one among them.

Overview
I chose university of Illinois at Chicago because it was fairly close to home (I commuted about 3 hours a day every day) and the education was fairly affordable compared to the other colleges close to home.
Fees
Tuition included paying for teachers, the facilities, computers and computer labs, CTA passes were given to all students. Do not remember how much each thing was.
