Tufts University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Tufts University sets programme-specific academic thresholds; the guidance below covers the baseline for Indian PG and UG applicants for 2027.

PG Admission Requirements at Tufts University

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 in a relevant field (recommended); competitive admits typically hold 70% or CGPA 7.0/10 and above.
  • English: TOEFL iBT 90 (or 4.5 on the new 1-6 scale), IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo 120 as the university minimum.
  • Credential verification: WES or approved course-by-course evaluation may be requested by specific programmes; official transcripts required post-admission.
  • Test scores: GRE is optional at most School of Engineering programmes; check the individual programme page.

UG Admission Requirements at Tufts University

  • Academic: Class 12 with 85% or above from CBSE, ISC or a State Board (recommended); admitted profiles usually cross 90%.
  • English: TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS 7.0, or Duolingo 125 for undergraduate applicants (recommended thresholds; TOEFL/IELTS may be waived for English-medium high school).
  • Financial proof: Certification of Finances for approximately USD 96,000 per year is required before I-20 issue.

Key insight: Indian applicants from English-medium schools can request a TOEFL/IELTS waiver, but the university reserves the right to require testing if the writing sample or interview suggests otherwise.

Tufts University Acceptance Rate 2027

Tufts University admitted 10% of applicants to the Class of 2030 (Fall 2026 entry) from a record 36,000 undergraduate applications, keeping it in the top tier of US selectivity. The rate is officially disclosed for undergraduate; graduate acceptance runs higher and varies by school.

YearUndergraduate Acceptance RateTrend
Class of 2030 (Fall 2026)10%Steady
Class of 2029 (Fall 2025)11%Steady
Class of 2026 (Fall 2022)9.7%Record low

[Source: Tufts University Office of Undergraduate Admissions]

Graduate acceptance is estimated at 25-40% (estimated) across School of Engineering masters, with more competitive programmes such as MS Data Science running toward the lower end. International admits made up around 11-12% of the recent Tufts undergraduate cohort.

Reality check: Indian applicants at the 90%+ Class 12 or 8.0+ CGPA band with strong English scores are the realistic pool, since the 10% headline rate is set by domestic-heavy competition and standardised-test averages.

Tufts University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The main Medford/Somerville campus spans 150 acres about five miles northwest of downtown Boston, with the Boston health-sciences campus, Cummings School (veterinary) in Grafton, and a European campus in Talloires, France.

  • Location and transit: The MBTA Green Line Extension serves the campus directly at Medford/Tufts station, reaching downtown Boston in 20 minutes.
  • Housing: On-campus housing is guaranteed for first-years and sophomores; roughly 65% of undergraduates live on campus, and international graduate students typically move off-campus after year one.
  • Facilities: The Tisch Library, Cummings Center for Life Sciences, Joyce Cummings Center (a 175,000-square-foot computing and engineering hub opened in 2021), and 220,000 square feet of new academic space anchor STEM teaching.
  • Indian community: The Tufts Indian Cultural Society, Diwali celebrations at Cohen Auditorium, and active graduate cohorts across MS Computer Science and Data Science give Indian students a settled base.

What Indian students say: Access to Boston’s tech and biotech recruiters is the standout draw; the Green Line makes internship interviews easy. Winter costs (heating, snow gear) catch first-years off-guard, so budget an extra INR 60,000 to 80,000 for the first cold season.

Tufts University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Tufts University reports strong post-graduation outcomes anchored by the Boston tech and biotech corridor; Career Center data show most STEM cohorts placing within six months of graduation.

  • Employment within 6 months (undergraduate): 93% of the Class of 2023 employed, in graduate school, or in service programmes six months out (officially disclosed).
  • Median MS starting salary: USD 95,000 (INR 90.7 lakh) for computing and engineering masters (market median for US STEM MS, estimated).
  • Top recruiters: Tech and consulting sectors, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Wayfair, Fidelity, Deloitte, and Boston-area biotech firms such as Moderna and Biogen (representative employer set).
  • Career support: The Tufts Career Center runs on-campus recruitment fairs each semester, and STEM-designated masters unlock the 24-month OPT extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT.
  • Indian alumni: Notable alumni include Pierre Omidyar (eBay founder) and Meredith Whittaker; Indian graduates have moved into product and data roles at Bay Area and Boston tech firms.

Insider note: Boston’s biotech cluster (Cambridge, Kendall Square) hires heavily from Tufts’ Bioengineering and Pharmacology masters, giving Indian graduates an F-1 route that domestic-only universities cannot match.

Tufts University vs Peer Universities

The peers below are selective US research universities Indian applicants shortlist alongside Tufts, chosen for comparable QS band, similar programme mix, or overlapping recruiter pool.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (USD)Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh)Differentiator
Tufts University#33844,52042.52 lakhBoston access, STEM designation, strong biotech placement
Boston University#11263,79860.93 lakhLarger scale, wider programme catalogue
Northeastern University#18929,76028.42 lakhSignature co-op programme with paid internship terms
University of Massachusetts Amherst#24318,75017.90 lakhLower cost public research option
Brandeis University#49862,24059.44 lakhSmaller cohort, similar Boston recruiter pool

Tufts stands out for the combination of top-40 U.S. News rank, STEM-designated masters, and Green Line access to Boston, at a per-credit tuition that undercuts private neighbours such as Boston University and Brandeis. The trade-off is programme scale: Tufts runs smaller cohorts than nearby research giants.

Tufts University fits the Indian applicant who wants a top-40 US research brand at masters level with STEM designation and a direct route into the Boston tech and biotech recruiter pool. The total investment sits around INR 53 lakh for a two-year MS against a median MS starting salary near INR 90.7 lakh, giving a reasonable ROI window on the F-1 pathway. See the study in USA guide for OPT and H-1B planning.

Tufts is not the pick for applicants who want the sticker prestige of a top-100 QS World brand or a very large Indian cohort, and those criteria push toward alternatives such as Boston University with its higher QS position and larger international enrolment.

Ans. Yes, Tufts University waives the English test for applicants who completed a degree at a US or English-medium university, hold citizenship from a designated English-speaking country, or completed two consecutive years of full-time study at an English-medium institution. Indian applicants from English-medium high schools may request a waiver, but the graduate admissions office decides case-by-case.

Ques. What dependent visa and financial proof rules apply at Tufts University?

Ans. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of Tufts F-1 students can apply for the F-2 dependent visa. Financial proof for a single student runs approximately USD 96,000 per year for undergraduate and USD 75,000 for graduate; each dependent adds around USD 8,000 to USD 10,000 per year on the Certification of Finances form filed before I-20 issuance.

Overview

I highly recommend the MS in Innovation & Management course for anyone looking to expand into a more managerial role from a technical background. The level of hands on experience and connections you make here are extremely valuable and rare to find.

Living so close to a city like Boston, the campus life is as good as it can be. You have all the best parts of the city & the suburbs (based on what you prefer). The public transport is also one of the best in the country which means you can live here as a student without the need for a car which is rare for a US city.

Tufts is a really great place - not super competitive, great sense of community. The professors are fantastic, and it's good for psychology, English, and politics, which are all things I am interested in.
