- English: TOEFL iBT 100+ or IELTS 7.0+ (recommended); PTE and Duolingo English Test accepted by some departments (verify at Brown Graduate School language requirements page)
- Standardised Tests: GRE required only for select departments (Economics, some Sciences); GMAT/GRE for IE Brown Executive MBA; the majority of programmes are GRE-optional for 2027 entry
- Credentials: Three letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and WES-evaluated transcripts
Undergraduate Admission Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 (CBSE, ISC, or State Board) with 88% (recommended); no fixed cutoff, curriculum rigour weighted equally
- English: TOEFL iBT 100+, IELTS 8.0+, or Duolingo English Test 130+; SAT and ACT remain test-optional through Fall 2027
- Application: Common Application, two teacher recommendations, one counselor recommendation, personal essays, and CSS Profile for financial aid
Key insight: Brown University does not publish rigid academic cutoffs, but admitted Indian students in recent Fall cohorts have averaged 92% at Class 12 for the College and CGPA 8.5/10 at bachelor’s level for the Graduate School.
Brown University Acceptance Rate 2027
Brown University reported an overall undergraduate acceptance rate of 5.65% for the Fall 2025 cycle, one of the lowest across the Ivy League and a marginal loosening from the prior year.
| Cycle | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2025 | 5.65% | Slight rise from record low |
| Fall 2024 | 5.2% (estimated) | Historic low |
| Fall 2023 | 5.1% (estimated) | Continued selectivity |
The Early Decision round runs materially higher than Regular Decision, with ED admit rates in the 13% to 15% band in recent cycles. Graduate acceptance rates vary sharply by department, from under 8% for the ScM Computer Science to above 30% for select humanities programmes.
Reality check: Indian applicants face a stricter internal bar than the headline 5.65% because international admits compete for a fixed slot count; a realistic working figure for Indian nationals is 3% to 4% (estimated) at the College.

Brown University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Brown University occupies a 143-acre campus on College Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, a compact and walkable city 90 minutes south of Boston by train.
- Location and transport: Central Providence campus; T. F. Green International Airport 15 minutes south; Amtrak Northeast Corridor to Boston and New York
- Housing: On-campus housing guaranteed for first three years; 76% of undergraduates live on campus; monthly rent band USD 900 to USD 1,400
- Facilities: John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library (Rock), Sciences Library, Nelson Fitness Center, Granoff Center for the Creative Arts, and the Brown Design Workshop for engineering makers
- Indian student community: Active Brown University South Asian Students Association (SASA), Diwali celebrations at Sayles Hall, and a strong PhD Indian cohort in Applied Mathematics and Data Science
What Indian students say: The Open Curriculum lets Indian undergraduates blend Computer Science with Economics or Philosophy without a rigid core, which is rare across Ivy peers. Providence rent is roughly 40% cheaper than Cambridge or Manhattan, easing living-cost pressure.
Brown University Scholarships 2027
Brown University commits to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted undergraduates, including international applicants, through the Brown University Scholarship funded by the endowment.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brown University Scholarship | Need-based, non-repayable | Up to full COA (~USD 96,000/year) | Admitted UG international students demonstrating financial need | 15 February 2027 (with CSS Profile) |
| Sidney E. Frank Scholarship | Need-based, full-tuition | Full tuition, ~USD 74,568/year | Admitted UG students with highest demonstrated need | Selected at admission; no separate application |
| Departmental Fellowships (Graduate School) | Merit-based, tuition + stipend | Full tuition + USD 32,000+ stipend | PhD and select ScM admits; nomination by department | Aligned with programme deadline |
| Watson Institute Graduate Fellowship | Merit-based | Partial tuition support | Master’s in International and Public Affairs candidates | Verify at Watson Institute funding page |
Planning note: Brown University’s need-aware admission means asking for aid can lower the admit odds at the margin for international applicants; the CSS Profile and Non-Custodial Parent form must be submitted with the application, not after.

Brown University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Brown University’s Center for Career Exploration reports strong first-destination outcomes for both undergraduate and master’s cohorts, with technology, consulting, and finance leading the recruiter mix for Indian graduates.
- First-destination outcome rate: 95% employed, in graduate study, or in fellowships within six months (recent Class of 2024 reported)
- Median UG starting salary: USD 82,000/year (INR 71.75 lakh) (estimated market median for STEM and Economics graduates)
- Median PG starting salary: USD 95,000/year (INR 83.1 lakh) (estimated) for Computer Science and Data Science master’s
- Top recruiter sectors: Technology (Google, Meta, Amazon), consulting (McKinsey, Bain, BCG), and finance (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan) — recruiter names representative, not disclosed as full official list
- Post-study work: 12 months of standard OPT, extendable to 36 months total for STEM degrees; Brown is E-Verify enrolled for STEM extension eligibility
Insider note: Indian graduates in Computer Science and Data Science routinely convert OPT into H-1B sponsorship at Big Tech; consulting firms treat Brown University as a target school for their US associate intake, easing on-campus recruiting access.
Brown University vs Peer Universities
Indian applicants typically weigh Brown University against other Ivy League and Ivy-plus universities on the US East Coast, on the axes of academic flexibility, cost, and ROI for master’s cohorts.
| University | QS World 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Tuition (USD/INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brown University | #66 | #42 of 824 | 74,568 / 65.25 lakh | Open Curriculum, IE joint Executive MBA |
| Cornell University | #16 | NA | 78,000 / 68.25 lakh (estimated) | Largest Ivy; engineering and hotel administration |
| Yale University | #23 | NA | 72,000 / 63.0 lakh (estimated) | Humanities, law, and drama depth |
| Columbia University | #34 | NA | 85,000 / 74.4 lakh (estimated) | New York location; professional schools |
| Dartmouth College | #207 | NA | 65,000 / 56.9 lakh (estimated) | Small cohort, teaching-intensive Ivy |
Brown University stands out among Ivy peers for the Open Curriculum’s freedom, a materially cheaper Providence living cost than Manhattan or Cambridge, and the only Ivy-branded joint Executive MBA offered with IE Business School. Yale and Cornell edge Brown on raw QS position, but Brown holds a stronger Collegedunia Study Abroad rank (#23 in USA) than most non-Ivy peers Indian students consider.
Brown University suits the Indian student who prizes intellectual freedom over prescribed cores and can either fund USD 96,000+ per year or credibly demonstrate deep financial need for the Brown University Scholarship. The 5.65% acceptance rate paired with a USD 82,000 median starting salary translates into a demanding but recoverable ROI on the four-year AB or two-year ScM investment.
It is not the right fit for Indian applicants who want a large STEM-first curriculum, a merit-scholarship-heavy funding path, or guaranteed admission at competitive academic rigour; Purdue University or the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign offer better odds and lower tuition for a similar Indian STEM applicant profile.
Brown University FAQs
Ques. Does Brown University require GRE for Indian master’s applicants?
Ans. Most Brown Graduate School master’s programmes made GRE optional for 2027 entry, including Data Science and Public Health. Economics and select basic-sciences departments still require GRE General; the IE Brown Executive MBA accepts either GRE or GMAT, and can waive both with more than eight years of managerial work experience for Indian applicants. Verify the exact stance on the programme’s admissions page since departmental policy can shift year to year.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on an F-1 visa at Brown?
Ans. F-1 visa holders at Brown University may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic term and full-time during university breaks, without additional authorisation. Off-campus work needs prior authorisation through CPT (linked to coursework) or OPT (post-completion). Brown’s Office of International Student and Scholar Services processes CPT applications within two weeks and offers pre-OPT workshops from early spring each year.
Ques. How does the Open Curriculum work for international undergraduates?
Ans. Brown’s Open Curriculum removes distribution requirements entirely; Indian undergraduates must complete 30 courses over four years and finish one concentration, with no core mandate. Students may take up to four courses per term Satisfactory/No Credit, encouraging cross-disciplinary risk. The freedom suits students confident in self-directed study; those seeking a structured pre-med or engineering path should discuss sequencing with a Brown Meiklejohn peer advisor early.
Ques. Which Indian education loan providers finance Brown University?
Ans. HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India (Global Ed-Vantage), Avanse, Axis Bank, and Prodigy Finance all list Brown University as a Tier 1 eligible institution for education loans of up to INR 1.5 crore. HDFC Credila and Prodigy Finance offer non-collateralised loans against future US earnings for STEM master’s cohorts; SBI and ICICI generally require collateral for tickets above INR 80 lakh.
Ques. Does Brown offer online master’s programmes for Indian students?
Ans. Brown University runs a small set of online and hybrid programmes through the Executive Master’s format, including the IE Brown Executive MBA (blended residential-online) and select professional certificates via the School of Professional Studies. Traditional Brown Graduate School master’s programmes such as ScM Computer Science and MPH remain on-campus for Indian students; there is no fully online STEM master’s currently offered.
Ques. What financial documents do Indian applicants submit to Brown?
Ans. Undergraduate applicants seeking aid must file the CSS Profile, the Non-Custodial Parent Profile, six months of Indian bank statements, income tax returns for both parents, and property valuation certificates where applicable. Graduate applicants submit an affidavit of financial support and a bank statement showing at least one year of tuition and living costs before the university issues Form I-20 for the F-1 visa interview.
Ques. Are there interviews for Indian applicants to Brown?
Ans. Undergraduate applicants may be invited to an optional alumni interview, conducted in India by Brown Club volunteers over video call; participation carries a small positive signal but declining does not disadvantage the application. Graduate School interviews are department-specific: PhD Computer Science and Applied Mathematics routinely interview shortlisted Indian applicants, while most terminal master’s programmes do not require interviews.
Ques. How long is STEM OPT for Indian graduates from Brown?
Ans. Indian graduates completing a STEM-designated master’s or bachelor’s at Brown University receive 12 months of standard OPT followed by a 24-month STEM extension, for a total of 36 months of work authorisation. Brown is enrolled in the E-Verify system, which is a prerequisite for the STEM extension; students must file the extension application no earlier than 90 days before the standard OPT expires.

For the Prestige, and the good education of an Ivy League institution as well as higher chances of getting into a good medical school later on in life. They also gave me a fairly good financial aid package.
