Rice University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Rice reviews Indian applicants against academic transcripts, standardised English scores, essays, and recommendations without a fixed cutoff.
Rice University PG Requirements
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 60% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); competitive Indian admits typically show 75% or CGPA 8.0/10
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 scale, exams on or after 21 January 2026) or 90 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 7.0, or Duolingo 115
- Credential verification: WES or programme-approved evaluation for transcripts issued outside the US
- Programme-specific: GRE optional for most engineering MS routes; the Jones School MBA requires GMAT or GRE plus three to five years of full-time work experience
Rice University UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 board results with 85% and higher (recommended) from CBSE, ICSE, or state boards
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 5.0 (1-6 scale) or 100 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 7.0, or Duolingo 130
- SAT or ACT: Test-optional through the Fall 2027 cycle; strong scores strengthen scholarship review
Key insight: Rice does not offer a blanket English test waiver for Indian applicants from English-medium schools; the waiver requires either two full years of instruction in English-medium curriculum or a completed degree where English is the official language of instruction.
Rice University Acceptance Rate 2027
Rice University posts an overall acceptance rate of 7.9% (estimated) for its most recent undergraduate cycle, placing it among the most selective private research universities in the United States. The figure is consistent across independent trackers, though Rice does not publish a formal Common Data Set for the 2027 cycle yet.
Graduate acceptance rates vary sharply by department, with computer science, bioengineering, and the Jones School MBA typically clearing under 15% and humanities routes closer to 20%. Indian applicants face a slightly higher effective bar because Rice remains need-aware for international first-year admissions.
Reality check: A CGPA above 8.0/10 plus a TOEFL iBT 5.0 or IELTS 7.5, one strong research or internship line, and a specific fit essay lift Indian applicants out of the borderline pool at Rice.

Rice University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Rice University reports strong short-cycle employment outcomes, with the Center for Career Development coordinating recruitment across engineering, business, and computing tracks.
- MBA employment: 92% of the Jones School Full-Time MBA class receives an offer within three months of graduation (school-disclosed, most recent cohort)
- MBA median base salary: USD 135,000 (INR 129.17 lakh), market median for Rice Jones full-time MBA cohorts
- Top recruiting sectors: Energy and cleantech, healthcare and life sciences, technology and semiconductors, management consulting, and aerospace
- Representative recruiters: ExxonMobil, Chevron, Deloitte, McKinsey and Company, Amazon, Microsoft, and NASA-linked Houston contractors (sector-representative list)
- Career support: One-on-one advising, resume workshops, career treks to Silicon Valley and New York, and a dedicated STEM OPT and H-1B guidance track for international graduates
Insider note: Indian MS and MBA graduates in energy, healthcare technology, and computing routinely secure Houston-based offers because Rice sits inside the Texas Medical Center and one metro stop from the city’s energy corridor employers.
Rice University vs Peer Universities
The peer set below compares Rice against three US private research universities of similar size and one Texas public benchmark that Indian applicants shortlist alongside.
| University | QS World Rank 2027 | CD Study Abroad | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rice University | #122 | #79 | 62,474 / 59.77 lakh | Small cohort research access next to Texas Medical Center |
| Emory University | #131 | #88 | 60,000 / 57.41 lakh (estimated) | Strongest US pairing for public health and business |
| Vanderbilt University | #178 | NA | 62,000 / 59.32 lakh (estimated) | Nashville tech-and-healthcare corridor placements |
| University of Texas Austin | #66 | #48 | 25,000 / 23.92 lakh (estimated) | Public Ivy pricing and stronger tech recruiting scale |
| Brown University | #57 | NA | 68,000 / 65.06 lakh (estimated) | Ivy League brand and open-curriculum flexibility |
Rice stands out for its meets-100%-need aid policy for admitted international first-year students, a benefit that Vanderbilt matches but Emory and UT Austin do not extend at full scale. Compared with UT Austin, Rice trades scale for a smaller research cohort and tighter faculty access.
Rice University fits Indian applicants targeting a small-cohort private research campus with heavy engineering, computing, or Jones School MBA orientation and the ambition to work in Houston’s energy or healthcare corridor. A four-year undergraduate investment of roughly INR 355 lakh including living or a two-year MBA at INR 145 lakh tuition is defensible against a market-median Jones School MBA base of INR 129 lakh, especially with three-year STEM post-study work in the USA extending the payback horizon.
It is not the right fit for Indian applicants seeking a low-cost sticker, a large public-university social scene, or a coastal tech-first pipeline; those students often accept University of Texas Austin instead, which prices graduate study closer to a quarter of Rice’s tuition while still recruiting to the same Houston and Austin employer set.
Rice University FAQs
Ques. What English test waivers does Rice University accept for Indian applicants?
Ans. Rice University waives the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo requirement only if the applicant has completed at least two full years of study in an English-medium curriculum or has finished a degree from an institution where English is the official language of instruction. Indian applicants from English-medium CBSE, ICSE, or state boards can request a waiver, but Rice does not guarantee one and reviews each case individually.
Ques. Can Indian graduate students work part-time at Rice University?
Ans. Yes. Indian graduate students on an F-1 visa can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term and full-time during official breaks. Rice offers teaching assistant, research assistant, library, and residential-college roles, most of which pay USD 15 to 22 per hour. Off-campus work needs prior CPT or OPT authorisation through the Office of International Students and Scholars.
Ques. How does Rice University handle GRE and GMAT waivers for MS and MBA programmes?
Ans. GRE is optional for most Rice MS engineering programmes since 2023, so strong Indian applicants can apply without it if their bachelor’s grades and research profile are competitive. The Jones School Full-Time MBA continues to accept GMAT, GRE, or Executive Assessment scores, and applicants with more than five years of quantitative work experience can request a waiver through the admissions committee.
Ques. What is the application fee at Rice University and how do Indian applicants request a waiver?
Ans. Rice University charges USD 75 for undergraduate applications and USD 85 to 100 for most graduate programmes. Indian applicants demonstrating financial hardship can request a fee waiver through the Common Application, Coalition, or the graduate portal by submitting a short justification and, for graduate programmes, backing documentation from a college counsellor or income proof.
Ques. Which Indian banks and lenders recognise Rice University for education loans?
Ans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, and international lenders such as Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing all sanction education loans for admitted Rice University students. Rice sits inside the top-200 QS and THE brackets, which qualifies it for higher unsecured loan ceilings and lower interest-rate slabs on most Indian public-sector education loan schemes.
Ques. Does Rice University require an interview for international admission?
Ans. Undergraduate interviews with Rice alumni are optional for international applicants and are not a decision factor; they are offered on a best-effort basis where alumni are available. Most graduate programmes at the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing conduct video interviews for shortlisted candidates. The Jones School MBA requires an invitation-only interview for all shortlisted applicants after essay review.
Ques. How does Rice University verify Indian academic transcripts?
Ans. Rice accepts transcripts issued directly by the Indian university or board in a sealed envelope, along with an official English translation where needed. Most graduate departments require a WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation for foreign transcripts, and Indian applicants should begin the WES process at least six weeks before the application deadline. Original mark sheets must be produced during enrolment for final verification.
Ques. What dependent visa options does Rice University support for Indian students?
Ans. Indian graduate students on an F-1 visa can bring a spouse and children under 21 on the F-2 dependent visa, and PhD scholars on a J-1 exchange visitor visa can bring dependents on J-2 status. F-2 dependents cannot work or study full-time in a degree programme, while J-2 dependents can apply for a work permit through USCIS. Rice’s Office of International Students and Scholars supports both routes.

- I really like the campus and the people surrounding me. Most of them mind their own business and are happy to help and engage with each other.
Dislikes
- Coming to dislikes, maybe the college tuition. I felt that it was really expensive, but since it's a private school; it's understandble
Campus Life
- We do have a lot of departments ranging from business, engineering, finance, etc. We do have good EC activities, and we have a certain website to book events and attend them if we're interested.
Fees
- The program is typically 3 semesters long. Some of them extend it to 4. But if you're planning for 3 semesters, the total cost could come around $70,000 - $75,000. If you're planning for 4 semesters, it could cost you a little around $100,000
Likes
- Excellent research environment
- Great facilities and resources
- Strong PhD prgram structure, coursework, etc.
Dislikes
- Overall population is less, as the university wanted to maintain that, however sometimes you might feel the lack of number of human beings around.
Campus Life
- There are many campus clubs run by both graduate and undergraduate students, spanning ethnic groups, music, dance, sports, and more. Just like any other university, all the departments have their own library space, as well as a central library called Fondren, which is pretty remarkable and has access to almost all the resources one would generally require.
- Rice has several open fields, a stadium, training facilities, a gym/recreation center, and several indoor and outdoor game courts.
Overview
With a strong and rigorous STEM program, good reputation, positive outcomes of alumni, and good reviews from current students, rated one of the happiest colleges in the US.
Fees
Tuition fees are irrelevant as if you are admitted they will only ask you to pay the amount that you can pay according to your family's financial ability. If you don't get aid tuition is around $49000 annually.
Overview
The department had a good number of faculty members in my area of ??research allowing me to chat with them in the hallways and the general vibe of the university felt very welcoming as they have a large number of international students.
Fees
All Ph.D. positions are funded (so no tuition fee to worry about on your end) and you get paid a healthy stipend to support living costs.
Overview
Rice offered me full financial aid that covered all expenses and tuition. Also, the residential college system is what really makes for a welcoming, family-like social scene.
Fees
Undergraduate tuition is $46,600 a year with additional costs for housing and dining on campus. There are also charges that are added to the bill for student activity, recreational center usage, and health and wellness fees.
Overview
It has a small amount of students meaning there is more access to opportunities and professors. It is also known for engineering, and known for internship and research opportunities.
Campus Life
SO many opportunities to explore wide range of interests, many research facilities, great study spaces, great library, everywhere on campus is close and accessible, dorms are nice.
