Indian applicants to UConn need a recognised bachelor’s degree, an English proficiency score and, for most engineering and business masters, a competitive GRE or GMAT score.

UConn PG Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s from an AICTE or UGC-recognised institution with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 minimum (recommended); competitive programmes look for 70% or CGPA 7.0/10.
  • English test minimums: TOEFL iBT 79 total, IELTS 6.5 overall, PTE Academic 53, Duolingo English Test 105 (verify at grad.uconn.edu).
  • Credential verification: WES ICAP evaluation recommended for Indian transcripts; mark sheets must be sent by the issuing institution.
  • Standardised tests: GRE recommended for MS Engineering and MS Data Science; GMAT or GRE required for MBA and MS Finance.

UConn UG Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • Academic: Class 12 completion from CBSE, ICSE or a State Board with 75% to 85% (recommended); STEM majors expect Mathematics and Science in Class 12.
  • English test minimums: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo English Test 105.

Key insight: IELTS or TOEFL waivers are available if Indian applicants completed their bachelor’s degree in English at a recognised university and can submit a medium-of-instruction letter with the application.

University of Connecticut Acceptance Rate 2027

UConn reported an official acceptance rate of 55% for the 2024 admit cycle, based on 56,700 applications received across undergraduate admissions. This is the university-published figure and is considered reliable.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202455%Stable
202356%Slight decrease

UConn is a moderately selective public research university, with graduate programme admit rates varying by department. STEM-heavy masters like MS Computer Science and Engineering are more competitive than the overall university rate.

Reality check: Indian applicants with 70% Class 12 marks and a 320+ GRE can realistically target UConn MS Engineering; the university values well-rounded profiles with strong Statement of Purpose over test scores alone.

University of Connecticut Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UConn graduates enjoy strong outcomes in the New England job market, with the Hartford insurance corridor and Boston tech belt driving most placements.

  • Employment within 6 months: 92% for undergraduate School of Business (officially disclosed)
  • Median starting salary (MS): USD 78,000 (INR 68.25 lakh) market median
  • Top recruiter sectors: Financial services, insurance, technology and healthcare (representative sectors)
  • Post-study work: 12-month OPT plus 24-month STEM OPT extension on eligible masters
  • Career support: Dedicated Center for Career Development with employer partnerships across Fortune 500 firms in Connecticut and the Northeast US.

Insider note: Indian MS BAPM graduates from UConn are hired by Aetna, The Hartford, Cigna and Travelers, all headquartered in Hartford; the programme’s 24-month STEM OPT extension is a decisive advantage for H-1B lottery attempts.

University of Connecticut vs Peer Universities

UConn stands out for its STEM-designated business masters at deeply discounted price points and its embedded position within Hartford’s insurance and healthcare economy. The 55% acceptance rate keeps admission realistic for well-prepared Indian applicants.

University of Connecticut fits Indian applicants seeking a US News top-100 public research university at a total investment of INR 52 lakh to INR 65 lakh annually, with the MS BAPM programme delivering the strongest ROI against a median starting salary of INR 68 lakh. The Hartford insurance corridor and 24-month STEM OPT eligibility on qualifying masters give graduates a realistic H-1B pathway through the F-1 visa route.

UConn is not the right fit for applicants prioritising Silicon Valley tech hiring or Ivy-tier brand recognition; Stony Brook University or Rutgers University offer stronger positioning for those goals with comparable public-university economics.

University of Connecticut FAQs

Ques. What English-medium waiver documents does UConn accept from Indian applicants?

Ans. UConn accepts an official medium-of-instruction letter from an Indian university on institutional letterhead confirming that the bachelor’s degree was delivered entirely in English. The letter must be signed by the Registrar or Controller of Examinations and submitted alongside the application. Applicants from universities that do not issue this letter must submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores per the standard minimums.

Ques. Can Indian MS students work part-time on campus at UConn?

Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at UConn can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during semesters and 40 hours per week during breaks. Common roles include library assistants, dining hall staff, IT helpdesk and departmental graders. Off-campus employment requires CPT or OPT authorisation and typically begins after the first academic year of study.

Ques. Which Indian banks partner with UConn for education loans?

Ans. UConn is recognised for education loans by State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Avanse, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank without collateral for amounts up to INR 50 lakh subject to co-applicant income. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing offer no-collateral, no-cosigner loans covering full tuition and living expenses for eligible STEM masters, with disbursement in USD directly to UConn.

Ques. Does UConn require GRE for MS Computer Science admissions?

Ans. UConn’s School of Computing lists GRE as recommended but not mandatory for the MS Computer Science programme. Strong applicants without GRE need CGPA above 8.0/10 from a reputed engineering institution, a technical Statement of Purpose and academic or industry Letters of Recommendation. Submitting a competitive GRE score of 320 or above still strengthens funding chances at UConn.

Ques. How much financial proof does UConn require for the I-20?

Ans. UConn requires financial documentation showing USD 55,000 minimum for one academic year of study before issuing the I-20. Acceptable proof includes bank statements not older than 6 months, education loan sanction letters from recognised Indian banks, and sponsor affidavits with tax returns. The financial certification form and supporting documents must be uploaded through UConn’s international admissions portal.

Ques. Is the MS BAPM at UConn STEM-designated for OPT extension?

Ans. Yes, University of Connecticut’s MS Business Analytics and Project Management is STEM-designated under CIP code 52.1301, qualifying graduates for the 24-month OPT STEM extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT. Indian students therefore get 36 months of post-study work authorisation in the US, covering three H-1B lottery attempts and significantly improving green card sponsorship timelines.

Ques. Does UConn offer conditional admission for Indian applicants with low English scores?

Ans. UConn’s UConn American English Language Institute (UCAELI) offers conditional admission bridging for undergraduate and select graduate applicants who meet academic requirements but fall short on TOEFL or IELTS minimums. Students complete intensive English coursework and progress into their degree upon achieving the required proficiency level. Application to UCAELI is submitted through the standard international admissions portal.

Ques. Can UConn dependents on F-2 visa work or study in the US?

Ans. F-2 dependents of UConn students cannot work in the US under any circumstances and cannot pursue full-time degree study. Spouses may enrol in part-time recreational or vocational courses, while F-2 children may attend K-12 school full-time. Dependents seeking employment or full-time study must transition to F-1, H-1B or another qualifying visa category through separate USCIS applications.

Overview

My overall experience at this university has been really well. Everybody has been super welcoming and helpful and I love the environment. My apartment is very close to the university so I don’t need a car and the transportation has been really great too.

The campus is really big so there’s a lot of different events every week which is really nice. There are also a lot of clubs that anybody can join.

Overview

The university does provide a proper structured coursework which would touch on all parts of the basics. With the professors' real time experience and intellect, the course starts to make more sense. Apart from coursework, there are a couple of networking events the university organizes which are actually helpful for the students.

UCONN, School of Business does not have a big campus apart from just a building in the Downtown of Hartford, but UCONN Storrs has a very big campus which will provide the experience of an actual state university in the USA.

Overview

This college is in my home state and I ultimately chose it because it was the cheapest I got accepted to because I have in state tuition. I was in the top 10th percentile of my class and I got accepted into UConn’s honors program that only accepts 500 students out of an incoming class of over 6000. I chose this program because I originally thought I would transfer out but after staying for a year I really liked the school, it was big enough and had plenty of diversity and programs offered. But small enough that I didn’t feel overwhelmed by the large community. The honors program is a fantastic community.

Fees

I’m not aware of any scholarships for international applicants but there is a very high population of international students at the university. I was awarded the academic excellence scholarship and granted $7000 a year which significantly reduced my costs annually. I also have a university grant that was offered for financial aid. UConn now provides tuition-free for students from a family who make under a certain amount of income.
