Hofstra University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Hofstra admission requirements for Indian students sit at the mid-tier threshold for a US private university.
Postgraduate requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree: four-year or three-year bachelor’s with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); Zarb School prefers 60% or CGPA 6.0/10
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, PTE Academic 53, Duolingo English Test 120, or ITEP 4
- Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation required where transcripts are not in English
- GMAT or GRE: Zarb MBA accepts GMAT or GRE; waiver available for applicants with strong academic records
Undergraduate requirements:
- Class 12 result: 70% to 85% band (recommended); competitive admits usually sit above 75%
- English proficiency: same minimums as postgraduate, or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 500
- Supporting documents: Class 9 to 11 transcripts in English, counselor letter, passport copy, bank statement
Note: Indian applicants with a three-year bachelor’s are accepted into Hofstra graduate programs, which is not standard across US private universities and is a strong fit for Indian BCom, BBA, and BA graduates applying to the Zarb School.
Hofstra University Acceptance Rate 2027
Hofstra University’s acceptance rate sits at 68% (estimated) for the most recent reported admissions cycle. This figure reflects undergraduate decisions and is derived from reported application and admit totals; graduate acceptance varies sharply by programme.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 68.1% | Slight decline from prior year |
| 2023 | 70.6% | Stable moderate selectivity |
Hofstra is moderately selective by US private-university standards. Indian applicants with strong Class 12 scores and demonstrated English proficiency have historically received positive admit decisions here.
Reality check: A 68% headline rate hides programme-level variation; MS Computer Science and MS Business Analytics are more competitive than the overall figure suggests, so Indian STEM applicants should treat the Zarb and Engineering acceptance rates as noticeably lower.

Hofstra is #263 of 1,023 USA universities on the Collegedunia Study Abroad list and holds a QS Business subject rank of #301 globally in 2026, reflecting a stronger subject-level standing than its overall world rank implies.
Key insight: Hofstra’s US News National position of #183 keeps it well inside the US-recognised range for F-1 and OPT purposes, and its Zarb School QS Business rank makes it a credible choice for Indian MBA and MS Business Analytics applicants targeting New York employers.

Hofstra University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Hofstra’s career outcomes benefit from direct train access to Manhattan employers and a dense Long Island alumni network across finance, media, and healthcare.
- Top recruiters: Amazon, Apple, Boeing, Deloitte, JPMorgan Chase, and Northwell Health
- Median starting salary: up to USD 96,907 (INR 91.58 lakh) across placed graduates, labelled market median
- Career Center: on-campus career services run industry panels, resume reviews, and employer meetups through the academic year
- Post-study work: F-1 students qualify for 12 months of OPT, extending to 36 months for STEM-designated programs including MS Computer Science and MS Business Analytics
- Indian alumni context: Hofstra Zarb and Engineering alumni populate NY-area finance and tech firms, often transitioning from OPT to H-1B through the same employer
Insider note: Indian students at Hofstra report that the Zarb School’s required internship module helps secure an OPT-eligible role before graduation, especially in NYC-based consulting and analytics firms within 90 minutes of campus.
Hofstra University vs Peer Universities
Peer comparison places Hofstra against similarly-ranked US private universities on Long Island and the broader New York metro area, measured on QS rank, Collegedunia Study Abroad standing, and typical annual PG tuition.
| University | QS Rank 2024 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hofstra University | #551 to 600 | #627 | 54,780 / 51.77 lakh | Credit-based tuition near NYC with STEM MS options |
| Stony Brook University | #381 | #318 | 24,990 / 23.61 lakh (estimated) | Public research university with strong STEM research |
| Adelphi University | #1001+ | #780 (estimated) | 45,000 / 42.53 lakh (estimated) | Private LI campus with health and nursing focus |
| Fordham University | #631 to 640 | #410 (estimated) | 48,000 / 45.36 lakh (estimated) | Private Jesuit campus with Manhattan location |
| Pace University | #1001+ | #590 (estimated) | 47,000 / 44.42 lakh (estimated) | Lower Manhattan campus with finance focus |
Hofstra distinguishes itself from Long Island peers through its combined Zarb School business reputation, STEM OPT eligibility across MS tracks, and the credit-pricing model that lets students scale cost by course load. Compared against Fordham and Pace, Hofstra offers a traditional residential campus rather than a city-tower footprint.
Hofstra University is best suited to Indian students who want a mid-tier US private campus within commuting distance of New York City, especially those targeting the Zarb School’s MBA or STEM-designated MS tracks for OPT eligibility. The total investment of INR 52 lakh to 85 lakh is justified by median post-graduation salaries near INR 91 lakh and the proximity to NYC’s hiring base; details on the F-1 visa pathway complete the picture.
Hofstra is not the right fit for Indian applicants aiming at top-20 US research universities, or for students who prioritise the lowest sticker price; those readers should look at USA universities ranked higher by QS or explore more affordable public options like Stony Brook or SUNY Buffalo.
Hofstra University FAQs
Ques. What English-taught masters does Hofstra offer beyond Zarb and Engineering?
Ans. Hofstra delivers every graduate programme in English, including MA Journalism, MA Clinical Psychology, MFA Creative Writing, MS Speech-Language Pathology, MA Education, MS Health Administration, and MS Applied Behavior Analysis. Indian applicants whose bachelor’s medium of instruction was English may qualify for a TOEFL or IELTS waiver on individual program approval. The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication and the School of Education are two active graduate hubs beyond the Zarb and Engineering schools.
Ques. Can Indian F-1 students work part-time at Hofstra during the semester?
Ans. F-1 students at Hofstra may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the semester and full-time during official breaks, under US federal rules. On-campus roles include library assistants, research aides, and dining services positions, posted through the Hofstra Student Employment portal. Curricular Practical Training is available after one full academic year of enrolment and ties to a course credit; the International Students Office approves each CPT authorisation.
Ques. Does Hofstra waive the GMAT or GRE for Indian MBA applicants?
Ans. The Zarb School considers GMAT or GRE waivers for Indian MBA applicants with a bachelor’s CGPA above 7.5 out of 10, five years of relevant work experience, or a professional qualification like CA, CFA, or ACCA. Waivers are granted at admissions discretion and must be requested in the application form. Zarb MS programs including MS Business Analytics and MS Finance follow a similar waiver policy for strong academic profiles.
Ques. What is the application fee for Indian applicants to Hofstra?
Ans. Hofstra’s standard application fee is USD 75 (INR 7,088) for international undergraduate and graduate applicants. The university waives this fee during the 1 to 31 October window each year, which Indian applicants can target by preparing transcripts, test scores, and recommendation letters in advance. Fee waivers are automatic during that window and need no separate request on the Common Application or Hofstra graduate portal.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for Hofstra admits?
Ans. HDFC Credila, Avanse, Prodigy Finance, SBI, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank all accept Hofstra University as a recognised institution for education loan processing. Collateral loans typically cover full tuition and living costs up to INR 1.5 crore, while non-collateral loans from Prodigy and MPower Financing cover tuition up to USD 100,000 without an Indian cosigner. Students should finalise the loan sanction letter before applying for the F-1 visa interview.
Ques. How does Hofstra verify Indian academic transcripts for graduate admission?
Ans. Hofstra accepts WES course-by-course evaluations as the standard verification method for Indian bachelor’s and master’s transcripts. Applicants request the WES ICAP report, which includes a credential evaluation and GPA conversion to the US 4.0 scale. The evaluation typically takes 7 to 15 business days after Hofstra receives transcripts and mark sheets from the issuing Indian university; apostille is not separately required for admission purposes.
Ques. Does Hofstra offer dependent F-2 visa support for Indian spouses and children?
Ans. Hofstra issues I-20 documentation for F-2 dependents of enrolled F-1 students once the primary applicant proves additional financial support. The required proof is approximately USD 8,000 per dependent per year in liquid bank balance, in addition to the standard F-1 funding requirement. F-2 spouses cannot work in the US but may enrol in part-time study; dependent children can attend US public schools until the age of 21.
Ques. What happens if an Indian student withdraws from Hofstra after enrolling?
Ans. Hofstra follows a tiered tuition refund policy where students withdrawing before the first week of classes receive a 100% refund, dropping to 75% in week two, 50% in week three, and 25% in week four. Non-refundable fees including the university fee, technology fee, and activity fee are not returned. F-1 visa holders who withdraw must notify the International Students Office so their SEVIS record is terminated under correct status.

- They have a career center where you can go for guidance, mock interviews etc. They share relevant job/internship opportunities with you as well.
- There is a career fair every semester where companies come to the campus and you can know about the current openings plus network with the company employees.
- The most helpful thing is that in my final semester, I’ll get an option for co-op program, which is basically an internship which the university will find for me and if the student performs well, it can be converted to full time job offer as well.
Dislikes
- The campus life is pretty dull, there isn't much interaction between seniors and juniors.
- The campus does not allow the storage of electric scooters/cycles/skateboards, so either you have to buy a car or walk across the campus.
- Professors are super chill ie. they don't care if you are studying or not even coming to the classes. Although they will help you if you make an effort to reach them.
Campus Life
- My college has only one campus.
- The facilities include, a central library, sports fields such as baseball stadium, hockey stadium, football ground. There is a swimming pool, gym, badminton court. In-house medical center.
- Fall festival is the major campus festival in my university. The clubs include graduate management association, women in cybersecurity, Hofstra Marketing club etc.
- There are weekly sports events for basketball and football where players compete with different universities.
Fees
- $60,000 for full MBA Course (2 years), and around $8,800 per semester for hostel (graduate residence hall).
- The fee is semester wise or you can also request for a payment plan where you can pay in installments.
- Since I live in New York, therefore the price of regular grocery items to taxis is very high.
- The monthly expense if a person is living outside the university on rented room is $800 for the room + $300 for food and grocery (assuming that the student is not registering for campus eatery program and cooking at home; campus eatery is around $2600 per semester).

Overview
They had a really good drama department with a BA in Drama which allowed me to double major and also minor in musical theatre. My other major, psychology is also really good at Hofstra and they make sure your schedule fits everything.
Fees
A lot of people come to the school on one of the huge academic scholarships they give out but it still ends up being around $30,000 even if a scholarship covers half of the original cost. Also, classes don't cover mandatory purchases so you have to be ready to fish out hundreds of dollars on trips to the city if need be, and not to mention the cost of textbooks.
