UWM’s minimum thresholds for Indian applicants cover academic eligibility, English proficiency and credential verification, with programme-specific requirements often higher.

  • PG academic eligibility: Bachelor’s degree (three or four year) with minimum 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); several STEM master’s expect 65% or above
  • English proficiency (regular admission): TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 scale, effective 21 January 2026) / 79 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5, PTE 58, or Duolingo 120
  • Credential verification: WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation for all Indian transcripts before enrolment

  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 scale) / 61 (legacy scale), IELTS 6.0, PTE 50, or Duolingo 105 for undergraduate admission

Key insight: UWM offers dual admission with TOEFL iBT 4.0 / 68-78 legacy, IELTS 6.0, PTE 50-57 or Duolingo 95-115. Students in dual admission must reach full proficiency within three semesters through the Intensive English Program or retesting.

University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee acceptance rate sits at 88% (estimated) for undergraduate admission, placing UWM among the more accessible R1 public research universities in the Midwest. Graduate admission rates vary by programme and department, with STEM master’s programmes typically applying tighter GPA and GRE cutoffs.

Third-party estimates from admissions data trackers place the rate in the 88% to 91% band. Official programme-level acceptance rates are not published by UWM.

Reality check: An 88% (estimated) rate does not mean automatic admission for Indian applicants. Departments filter on the 55% bachelor’s threshold, English scores, and, for STEM master’s, on GRE quantitative scores and prior research or project experience.

University of Wisconsin Milwaukee vs Peer Universities

The peer set below compares UWM against Wisconsin’s flagship and two mid-tier US public research universities that Indian applicants commonly cross-shortlist for STEM master’s admission.

UWM’s tuition sits at the lower end of this Midwest peer set. Its R1 research classification and QS USA #103 position offer stronger academic credibility than its world band suggests for Indian applicants targeting cost-efficient STEM OPT pathways.

The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee suits Indian STEM and business master’s applicants seeking a $44,440 (₹42.55 lakh) per year all-in budget with R1 research access. The QS USA #103 placement, Milwaukee metro’s healthcare and manufacturing employer base and 36-month STEM OPT window make it a rational value pick against costlier coastal peers.

UWM is not the right fit for applicants targeting top-100 QS World brand recognition or Silicon Valley recruiter density, and it does not offer merit scholarships for international graduate students. Applicants prioritising either should compare F-1 visa-friendly alternatives such as the flagship University of Wisconsin-Madison or University of Cincinnati.

University of Wisconsin Milwaukee FAQs

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on campus at UWM?

Ans. Yes. F-1 visa holders at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the semester and full-time during official breaks. Common roles include teaching assistantships, research assistantships, library desk, dining services and the Panther Shop. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorisation from the CIE.

Ques. Does UWM waive GRE for MS Computer Science admission?

Ans. UWM’s M.S Computer Science generally expects a GRE score, but the department has offered case-by-case waivers to applicants with strong CGPA (above 8.0/10), documented research or industry experience of two or more years, or a US master’s in a related field. Waiver policy is set at the department level and changes each cycle, so email the graduate coordinator with your profile before applying.

Ques. What is the UWM graduate application fee and can it be waived?

Ans. The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee charges a non-refundable graduate application fee of $75 (₹7,181). Fee waivers are offered to McNair Scholars, participants in select fellowship programmes, and applicants who attend official UWM recruitment events. General fee waivers are not available for international applicants; the $75 must be paid at application submission.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise UWM?

Ans. UWM is on the approved university list of major Indian lenders including HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred, ICICI Bank, SBI Global Ed-Vantage and Bank of Baroda. Non-collateral loans up to ₹40 lakh are common; collateral loans cover the full $44,440 annual budget. Lenders require the I-20, admission letter and academic transcripts for sanction.

Ques. Does UWM offer conditional English admission for Indian students?

Ans. Yes. UWM’s dual admission pathway accepts TOEFL iBT 4.0 (new scale) or 68-78 (legacy), IELTS 6.0, PTE 50-57 or Duolingo 95-115. Admitted students take Intensive English Program courses and must reach full proficiency within three semesters through retesting or the portfolio assessment route with EAP coursework grades.

Ques. How long does STEM OPT last after graduating from UWM?

Ans. F-1 graduates from UWM’s STEM-coded master’s programmes receive 12 months of Optional Practical Training plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, totalling 36 months of US work authorisation. Eligible UWM programmes include M.S Computer Science, M.S Engineering, M.S Biomedical Engineering and M.S Health Care Informatics. The extension requires an E-Verify employer.

Ques. What documents does UWM require for transcript verification?

Ans. Indian applicants to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee must submit a course-by-course credential evaluation from WES or ECE. The evaluation requires official transcripts and degree certificates from every institution attended, sent by the issuing university in sealed envelopes or through the DigiLocker route. Allow eight to twelve weeks for WES processing before the I-20 deadline.

Ques. Are online or hybrid master’s degrees available at UWM for Indian students?

Ans. UWM offers online master’s degrees in fields including MBA, Nursing, Library and Information Science, and Healthcare Informatics. These programmes suit working professionals in India but do not qualify for F-1 visas or STEM OPT because they lack in-person residency. Indian students seeking US work authorisation must enrol in the on-campus format at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.

Campus Life

  • We have 3 major campus. Ex. Engineering Building (we call it EMS Building), Modern Chemical Engineering building has a world class labs, Lubar Buisness hall where all the buisness related programs they teach.
  • Student Union building where all the events happens. University has a 3 hostels. Sandburge Hall, Riverview Halls and Cambridge Commons. All are great but expensive. Go there if you are rich.
  • Events in UWM are really good. We have a different event each week. Lots of Free Food. People are so welcoming. You will meet a lots of American people there. Highly Diverse University.
  • UWM has a team for soccer, American football, Baseball and they play internationally. You will get opportunity to participate and you can play for university.

Fees

  • My fees are like around 15k Dollers for each semester. Fees varies based on which course you are taking. College says 26k dollers a year but you have to pay around 15000 dollers a semester for MS CS Student.
  • Monthly expense goes around 600$ on average if you are sharing apartment. But I have single room so I pay 650 for a apartment and extra 100 for a groceries. Hence my total monthly expense is 750$. But you get a on campus job easily so you usually gets 850$ per months so don't need to be worried.

  • It has only one campus in Milwaukee. Library, gym, huge sports facility, Med centre, even baby day care lol. Pantherfest and Geek Week are my favourites.
  • Prominent desi clubs. One for conservative and one for liberal desis. Sports, cricket, and music-based clubs are also there. Some hippy fests and some good hindu festivals also happen (like diwali, holi etc)

Overview

The cost was good, had a scholarship, close enough to home, sting engineering program. Enjoy the surrounding area, and have lots of student org opportunities. There are also lots of engineering companies in Milwaukee.

Fees

Tuition, dorms and food. There are extra fees for some courses as well as an extra fee for online courses. If you want to save money live in a triple freshman year and buy your own groceries, the food is ridiculously expensive in the food court.

Yes, You can apply again. Also If there were weaknesses in your previous visa application, address them in your new application. This could involve improved financial documentation or a more detailed study plan.
