Texas State University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants must meet Texas State University’s academic, English-proficiency, and credential-verification thresholds, which apply uniformly across most graduate programmes.

  • Academic eligibility (PG): Recognised four-year bachelor’s with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); three-year degrees accepted only after WES course-by-course evaluation confirms equivalence to a US bachelor’s.
  • English requirement: TOEFL iBT 78, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, PTE Academic 55, or Duolingo English Test 105 (verify at official page).
  • Credential verification: WES or ECE course-by-course report submitted directly to Texas State University; expect 4 to 6 weeks turnaround.
  • Test scores: GRE is waived for most MS programmes; GMAT recommended but not mandatory for the McCoy MBA.

Texas State University UG Admission Requirements

Undergraduate applicants submit Class 12 marksheets, standardised test scores, and an English proficiency score during a single application window.

  • Academic eligibility (UG): Class 12 with 70% to 85% aggregate (recommended) from a CBSE, ICSE, or state board.
  • Language requirement: TOEFL iBT 78, IELTS 6.5, or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 480+ as English proof.

Note: Texas State University waives TOEFL or IELTS for Indian applicants whose entire senior secondary and bachelor’s medium of instruction was English, provided the school issues a signed medium-of-instruction certificate.

Texas State University Acceptance Rate 2027

Texas State University admits 88% (estimated) of undergraduate applicants and roughly 60-70% (estimated) of graduate applicants, placing it in the accessible-admissions tier of Texas public research universities. Official cycle-by-cycle acceptance data is not published by the university.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
2024-202588% (estimated)Stable
2023-202487% (estimated)Slight increase

The high acceptance rate should not be confused with lax admissions review for international applicants, since Texas State University applies stricter document, financial, and academic thresholds to Indian students.

Reality check: An open acceptance rate does not mean a guaranteed I-20. Indian applicants with weak English scores, unverified financial documents, or missing WES reports face rejection despite meeting academic thresholds.

Texas State University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Texas State University sits on a 507-acre campus in San Marcos, with the San Marcos River running through it and a second campus in Round Rock serving graduate and health programmes.

  • Location and transport: San Marcos is 48 kilometres south of Austin and 80 kilometres north of San Antonio, with the Texas State Bobcat Shuttle providing free intra-campus transit.
  • Housing: On-campus housing runs USD 5,000 to 8,000 per year (INR 4.7 to 7.6 lakh); international student housing is not guaranteed after the first semester.

  • Indian community: The Indian Students Association organises Diwali, Holi, and Republic Day events; graduate cohorts in Computer Science and Engineering carry the largest Indian presence.

What Indian students say: San Marcos feels smaller and quieter than Austin, so Indian students often rely on Amazon Fresh and Costco runs to Austin twice a month. Assistantship offers are competitive, and networking with senior Indian PhDs in Engineering unlocks GRA positions faster than cold email.

Texas State University stands out for its combination of accessible admissions, a Central Texas location within commute distance of Austin’s tech scene, and a graduate tuition rate below most Texas public flagships. The trade-off is a lower US News position than Houston or Austin peers, which matters for prestige-conscious Indian employers.

Texas State University fits Indian applicants targeting MS Computer Science or MS Engineering with a total investment near INR 90 lakh, expected US median starting salary of INR 70.9 lakh, and the STEM OPT pathway; the university’s study in USA proposition rests on payback within three years for STEM tracks.

Texas State University is not the right fit for Indian applicants seeking a QS top-500 brand, an Ivy-tier network, or admission to Business Analytics MS programmes with sub-15% acceptance; those applicants should compare against the MBA universities in USA flagship set or East Coast R1 alternatives such as University of Houston.

Texas State University FAQs

Ques. What English test scores does Texas State University accept from Indian students?

Ans. Texas State University accepts TOEFL iBT with a minimum of 78, IELTS Academic with 6.5 overall, PTE Academic 55, and Duolingo English Test 105 for graduate applicants. Undergraduate applicants can also submit SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing scores of 480 or above in place of TOEFL. Indian students whose bachelor’s medium of instruction was English can request a waiver by submitting a medium-of-instruction letter from their institution.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on the Texas State campus?

Ans. Indian F-1 students at Texas State can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during regular semesters and 40 hours per week during official university breaks. Common on-campus roles include library assistant, dining hall staff, tutoring positions, and graduate assistantship roles at 20 hours weekly. Off-campus work outside curricular practical training is not permitted during the first academic year.

Ques. How long is OPT available for STEM programmes at Texas State University?

Ans. STEM-designated graduate programmes at Texas State University, including MS Computer Science, MS Data Analytics, and MS Electrical Engineering, qualify for a 24-month OPT extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT. This gives Indian STEM graduates 36 months of total US work authorisation after graduation. The extension requires an employer registered with E-Verify and continued adherence to reporting rules.

Ques. Does Texas State waive the GRE requirement for most MS programmes?

Ans. Texas State University waives the GRE for most master’s programmes including MS Computer Science, MS Data Analytics, and MEd Educational Leadership, particularly for applicants with strong undergraduate GPAs above 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Some engineering and quantitative programmes still recommend GRE scores for competitive applicants and scholarship consideration. Indian applicants should verify current requirements on the specific department page before assuming a waiver applies.

Ques. Are three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees accepted at Texas State University?

Ans. Texas State University considers three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees on a case-by-case basis, requiring a WES course-by-course evaluation to confirm US bachelor’s equivalence. Applicants from IITs, NITs, and select Indian universities with strong curricula are more likely to receive equivalence. Others may need to complete a one-year postgraduate diploma or an Indian master’s degree before applying for graduate admission at Texas State.

Ques. What is the application fee at Texas State University for Indian applicants?

Ans. Texas State charges an international application fee of USD 90 (INR 8,505) for undergraduate applicants and USD 55 to 75 (INR 5,198 to 7,088) for graduate applicants, payable by credit card during ApplyTexas or department portal submission. The fee is non-refundable and not waived, even if the application is withdrawn or denied. Some department-specific fee waivers exist for research assistantship-track PhD applicants.

Ques. Which Indian banks fund education loans for Texas State University?

Ans. Texas State University is recognised by major Indian education-loan lenders including SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, Axis Bank, Avanse, InCred, and Auxilo. Loans typically cover the full cost of attendance up to INR 1.5 crore, with collateral requirements above INR 40 lakh. Indian applicants should secure loan pre-approval before I-20 issuance so that financial documentation meets Texas State’s minimum funding threshold.

Ques. How does Texas State University verify Indian academic transcripts?

Ans. Texas State requires WES or ECE course-by-course evaluations for all Indian bachelor’s degrees, mailed directly to the university’s international admissions office by the credential agency. Indian applicants must also mail sealed original marksheets and provisional or degree certificates alongside the evaluation. Turnaround from WES ranges 4 to 6 weeks, so Texas State recommends starting evaluations 8 weeks before the intended application deadline.

Overview

Scenic campus. Not far away from my family's home so it was easy to travel back and forth when need be. It was close to a large city that provided the entertainment needed as well as a lot of parks around the area.. It was a work out going through campus which was very much appreciated. The amenities offered were very nice like the gym and the library and the hours were great.

Fees

Basic fee structures and charges like any other physical school. Overpriced. The content we are getting for the price we are paying is not worth it.
