The University of Georgia (UGA) is a public flagship research university in Athens, Georgia, founded in 1785. It holds #46 among US National Universities in the US News 2025-2026 edition.

The university operates 17 schools offering over 170 undergraduate majors and 190 graduate programmes, all taught in English. Indian applicants pursuing MS in USA options gravitate to Terry College business, computer science, and public health programmes. Fall 2027 undergraduate applications opened 1 August 2026 via Common App, and graduate applications close 15 April 2027.

  • US News National Rank: #46 in 2025-2026 edition
  • Overall Acceptance Rate: 42.23% (Class of 2026)
  • International Acceptance Rate: 20.9% (Class of 2028)
  • Intakes: Fall (primary), Spring, Summer
  • PG Non-Resident Tuition: $31,824 per year (₹28.01 lakh)
  • Application Fee: $85 for UG international, $75 for first PG programme

Non-resident tuition is set annually by the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents, though graduate assistantships offset costs for stronger applicants. Indian graduates on an F-1 visa can extend OPT by 24 months for STEM-designated majors at UGA. Applicants planning to study in USA should budget $46,000 to $50,000 yearly (₹40 to ₹44 lakh).

Exchange rate used: $1 = ₹88 as of August 2026

Admission Status: Open (Fall 2027 intake). UG Early Action closes 15 October 2026 and Regular Decision closes 1 January 2027 through the Common Application. Graduate Fall 2027 applications close 15 April 2027 via the UGA Graduate School portal. Spring 2027 graduate applications remain open until 15 October 2026 for programmes offering a January start.

Popular Courses and Fees at University of Georgia 2027

UGA offers tuition on an academic-year basis, split across Fall and Spring semesters. Non-resident PG programmes run $31,824 per year (2026-27 published rate). Most masters degrees complete in two years, so applicants should double the annual figure for total programme cost.

Insider note: Indian applicants at UGA cluster heavily in the Terry College MBA, MS Computer Science, and MPH tracks. STEM-designated masters give a 24-month OPT extension, so applicants targeting long US work runways prefer engineering, analytics or public health over general management.

University of Georgia Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

UGA requires a four-year bachelor’s degree for graduate admission, and three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees alone are not accepted.

University of Georgia PG Requirements

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); three-year Indian bachelor’s plus a masters or first year of masters is also acceptable.
  • Recognition: Indian institution must be recognised by AIU or AICTE.
  • English Proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80 minimum with 20 in Speaking and Writing, or IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band. Duolingo and PTE are not accepted at UGA.
  • Credential Verification: Transcripts require WES or equivalent evaluation for most departments.

University of Georgia UG Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 with 80% or above (recommended) from a CBSE, ICSE or state board recognised by AIU.
  • Standardised Tests: SAT or ACT scores strongly recommended for international UG applicants.
  • English Proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band. MOI waiver is not accepted.

Key insight: The MOI (medium of instruction) waiver is explicitly not accepted at UGA, so Indian applicants must take TOEFL or IELTS even if their bachelor’s was taught in English. Book test slots 3 months before the application deadline to avoid a score-report delay.

University of Georgia Acceptance Rate 2027

UGA published an overall acceptance rate of 42.23% for the Class of 2026, while the international admit rate ran tighter at 20.9% for the Class of 2028. Both figures come from official UGA admissions disclosures.

CohortAcceptance RateTrend
Overall (Class of 2026)42.23%Selective public flagship band
International (Class of 2027)21.6%Marginal tightening year on year
International (Class of 2028)20.9%Steady tightening for international pool

[Source: UGA Office of Undergraduate Admissions]

The 20.9% international rate signals that Indian applicants compete against a global pool roughly twice as selective as the overall admit line. Test scores, essays and demonstrated academic focus carry more weight for international files.

Reality check: A 20.9% international acceptance rate at UGA is materially harder than the 42% headline figure suggests. Indian applicants should treat UGA as a target school with 85%+ Class 12 marks or CGPA 8/10, backed by strong TOEFL or IELTS.

Monthly Cost of Living in Athens for Indian Students at University of Georgia

Athens is a small college city, so living costs run below major US metros. The table below covers a typical single graduate student.

CategoryMonthly ($)Monthly (₹)
Accommodation (shared apartment off-campus)$800-1,200₹70,400-1,05,600
Food and Groceries$300-450₹26,400-39,600
Transportation (UGA bus free for students)$50-100₹4,400-8,800
Books and Supplies$100₹8,800
Personal Expenses$200₹17,600
Total Monthly (estimated)$1,450-2,050₹1,27,600-1,80,400

[Source: UGA International Student Services cost estimate 2026-27]

Annual living cost works out to $17,400-24,600 (₹15.31 to 21.65 lakh), on top of tuition. Total yearly commitment sits at $49,000 to $56,000 (₹43 to ₹49 lakh) for a graduate student.

Insider note: Sharing a two-bedroom apartment near Milledge Avenue or Baxter Street cuts monthly rent to $500-700 per person, well under the campus-adjacent Five Points rate. UGA campus buses run free with the student ID, so most Indian students skip car ownership in the first year.

University of Georgia Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UGA occupies a 762-acre main campus in Athens, a college town of 130,000 residents about 90 minutes east of Atlanta.

  • Location and Transport: Athens sits 70 miles east of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport, connected by Groome shuttle and bus routes for $50-70 one way.
  • Housing: First-year UG students must live on campus; graduate students rent private apartments. UGA does not guarantee housing for international graduate students.
  • Facilities: The Miller Learning Center, Ramsey Student Center gym, and 34 libraries anchor academic life across North Campus and South Campus.
  • Indian Community: The UGA Indian Cultural Exchange runs Diwali and Holi events on campus, and the Indian Graduate Student Association helps with airport pickup and initial settling.

What Indian students say: Athens is friendlier and cheaper than most US college towns, with a walkable downtown five minutes from campus. First-year graduate students report the biggest adjustment is finding vegetarian options beyond the two Indianrestaurants downtown, though grocery stores like Kroger stock most South Asian staples.

University of Georgia Scholarships 2027

UGA offers limited institutional aid to international students, with the strongest funding routes running through graduate departments as assistantships.

Planning note: Graduate assistantships are the primary funding path at UGA and are awarded department by department, not centrally. Indian applicants should email potential faculty advisors in December-January, before the general 15 April deadline, to be considered for TA or RA slots.

University of Georgia Rankings 2027

UGA’s strongest position is #46 among US National Universities in the US News 2025-2026 edition, holding a steady top-50 public university rank.

Ranking BodyLatest EditionPrior Edition Trend
QS World University Rankings2027: #536Consistent 500-600 global band
US News Best National Universities2025-2026: #46Steady top-50 public university
ARWU Shanghai2025: 301-400 bandStable global research position

[Source: QS, US News, ARWU]

Terry College’s undergraduate business programme sits inside the US News top 25 nationally, and the Grady College of Journalism ranks among the strongest US public journalism schools.

Key insight: The US News #46 National rank matters most for Indian applicants because US employers and F-1 visa officers recognise this hierarchy. UGA also clears the 10-university list many Indian education lenders require for premium loan rates.

University of Georgia Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UGA reports strong employment outcomes across colleges, with Terry College MBA graduates seeing the highest published salary bands.

  • Terry Full-Time MBA Median Starting Salary: $105,000 (₹92.40 lakh) (market median from Terry MBA employment reports, verify at Terry Career Management)
  • Terry MBA Placement Rate: 90%+ within three months of graduation (market benchmark, verify at Terry Employment Report)
  • Top Hiring Sectors: Consulting, financial services, consumer goods, technology and healthcare
  • Career Support: The UGA Career Center runs employer visits, internship pipelines and international-student CPT and OPT advising.
  • Work Visa: Standard 12-month OPT plus 24-month STEM OPT extension for STEM-designated masters at UGA

Insider note: Indian graduates from UGA STEM programmes typically use the full 36-month OPT window to complete two H-1B lottery cycles. Terry College hires more heavily in Atlanta-based consumer goods and financial services than in bulge-bracket investment banking.

University of Georgia vs Peer Universities

UGA competes against other public flagship universities in the US Southeast for Indian applicants. The table below compares annual PG tuition and headline differentiators.

UniversityUS News National RankAnnual PG Fee ($)Annual PG Fee (₹ lakh)Differentiator
University of Georgia#46$31,82428.01 lakhStrong public research flagship, lower Athens COL
Georgia Institute of Technology#33 (verify at US News)$32,000 (market estimate)28.16 lakhSTEM-focused, higher engineering ranking
University of Florida#28 (verify at US News)$30,130 (market estimate)26.51 lakhLarger public flagship, higher overall rank
University of South Carolina#121 (verify at US News)$29,500 (market estimate)25.96 lakhRegional Southeast alternative, easier admission
Auburn University#98 (verify at US News)$32,000 (market estimate)28.16 lakhSEC peer with strong engineering focus

UGA holds a firm middle-ground position: it ranks well ahead of South Carolina and Auburn, and matches Terry’s business reputation against Florida while offering cheaper Athens living costs. Georgia Tech remains the tougher engineering-first alternative.

The University of Georgia is a fit for Indian applicants targeting a $46,000 to $50,000 annual investment against a Terry MBA median around $105,000. STEM masters candidates gain a 36-month OPT window through the MS universities in USA STEM designation, giving two H-1B lottery attempts.

The university is not the right fit for engineering candidates chasing top-25 US STEM rankings, who should look at Georgia Tech instead, nor for candidates unable to fund the $46,000 yearly cost without a graduate assistantship.

University of Georgia FAQs

Ques. What is the University of Georgia application fee for Indian students?

Ans. UGA charges $85 for international undergraduate applicants through the Common Application, roughly ₹7,480 at the August 2026 exchange rate. Graduate applicants pay $75 for the first UGA Graduate School programme and $25 for each additional programme in the same cycle. Fee waivers are available in limited cases through the Common App need-based waiver, but are rarely granted to international applicants.

Ques. Does UGA accept three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for graduate admission?

Ans. UGA does not accept standalone three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for graduate admission. Acceptable qualifications include a four-year bachelor’s, a three-year bachelor’s paired with a completed masters, or a three-year bachelor’s plus the first year of a masters programme. The institution must be recognised by AIU or AICTE for the credential to count.

Ques. How much does the Terry College MBA cost at University of Georgia?

Ans. The Terry Full-Time MBA runs at $18,000 per year in non-resident tuition, roughly ₹15.84 lakh, giving a two-year total of $36,000 (₹31.68 lakh). The Executive MBA is priced as a fixed programme at $78,918 total (₹69.45 lakh). Both figures exclude living expenses of $17,400-24,600 per year for Athens.

Ques. Is IELTS or TOEFL preferred by University of Georgia for admission?

Ans. UGA treats IELTS and TOEFL equally, with minimums of IELTS 6.5 overall (6.0 in each band) or TOEFL iBT 80 (20 in Speaking and Writing). Duolingo English Test and PTE Academic are not accepted for graduate admission at UGA. Indian applicants with an English-medium bachelor’s still need one of these tests, since the MOI waiver is not accepted.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UGA?

Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic year and 40 hours during breaks. Common on-campus roles include library assistants, dining services and research assistant positions inside academic departments. Off-campus work requires either Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorisation, both approved by the UGA International Student Services office.

Ques. Which Indian education loan lenders finance University of Georgia programmes?

Ans. UGA sits inside the premium tier at HDFC Credila, Avanse, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank, all of which offer collateral-free loans up to ₹75 lakh for STEM masters programmes. SBI Global Ed-Vantage covers up to ₹1.5 crore with collateral for total programme cost. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing also lend to admitted UGA graduate students without a co-signer.

Ques. What documents does UGA require for transcript verification from India?

Ans. UGA requires WES (World Education Services) course-by-course evaluation for most graduate departments, submitted directly to the Graduate School. Original transcripts and degree certificates must be sent by the Indian university in sealed envelopes, and consolidated marksheets are needed for CBCS-based bachelors. Attested photocopies are not accepted. WES processing takes 4-6 weeks, so applicants should start eight weeks before the deadline.

Ques. Are Duolingo scores accepted for UGA graduate admission?

Ans. No, UGA does not accept the Duolingo English Test for graduate admission at this time. The Graduate School accepts only IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT for demonstrating English proficiency. Applicants using TOEFL Home Edition should confirm with their target department, since some UGA programmes accept it while others require in-centre TOEFL. IELTS Indicator is also not on the accepted list.

  • You have free buses till 3 am. And the Downtown here in Athens is the best in the USA.
  • There will be events mostly every other week. And the recreational centre is open till 2 am. Definitely try to join a sports club its fun. I was part of a volleyball club, and we used to have tournaments every month.

Fees

  • It would cost close to 36000 USD for an MS in CS non-thesis. So it usually costs 1100 dollars per credit.

  • UGA has 3 different research stations within GA, particularly for Agricultural research. Apart from that, every department has its own personal labs allotted to its professors and students.
  • The main campus has around 3 major libraries, and apart from them, it has various learning centers for students to sit, learn, and have access to world-class facilities for free.
  • UGA is big on sports; you've got game events every week.
  • Students have access to the gym and training activities.

Fees

  • Around 20000 per semester on average

Overview

Georgia is a pretty state in a warm climate, it’s a very walkable pretty campus with a great school . University of Georgia is a beautiful school in the south, eastern part of the United States. The campus is in a very warm climate location, has beautiful scenery, and is a very aesthetically pleasing campus for studying outdoors, or long walks. There are plenty of on-campus food options and cafés to choose from, Hundreds of different clubs and organizations to join, lots of on-campus events, an extreme level of school spirit for sports teams, two different learning centers for studying, and more than two libraries on campus. There are buses that run across campus completely free to the students as well.

Campus life is amazing, there are plenty of clubs and organizations, and plenty of extracurricular activities on campus! there are over 1000 clubs including clubs for very interesting hobbies, like sailing and rowing, Wi-Fi all over campus, I think five different libraries, two different learning centers for studying, plenty of sports! There are two different gyms on campus… and the school is very big into sports so it’s a lot of fun.

Overview

I chose UGA because it has the best pharmacy school in Georgia. It's also top ten in the country. I wanted to go to a school that had a strong football community as well. UGA seemed to be the perfect fit for me

Fees

The fee structure is like any other. We have our tuition ($7,000-9,000) each semester. Then we have the student fees like transportation, health centre fee, activities fee, gym fee, and I have a special institution fee for the college of pharmacy
