The dry lower atmosphere is dominated by nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen forms nearly four fifths of dry air, while oxygen forms about one fifth. Argon is a stable inert gas, and carbon dioxide is present in a small proportion but is climatically important because it absorbs outgoing terrestrial radiation.

The atmosphere is divided into layers on the basis of height, temperature trend and function. Troposphere is the lowest and most important layer for human beings because weather, clouds, dust and most water vapour are concentrated there.
