The University of Melbourne has opened its Master’s scholarship pool for the 2027 intake, effective 17 August 2026. Indian applicants for coursework and research Masters will be auto-considered when they file the course application. The university awards over 600 Graduate Research Scholarships each year, with nearly half ring-fenced for international students. Round 1 closes on 31 October 2026 for a February 2027 start.

  • Every eligible Indian applicant for a Master’s programme is auto-considered for the flagship awards, with no separate scholarship form to file.
  • Coursework Master’s awards carry a 25% to 100% tuition remission, while research Master’s applicants can win a full fee offset plus a stipend of AUD 39,500 per year.
  • Melbourne draws one of Australia’s largest Indian graduate cohorts, and the awards blunt tuition bills that touch AUD 56,480 a year for Engineering.

Melbourne is Australia’s highest-placed university in the 2026 QS rankings. The scholarship pool spans Engineering, Design, Education, Humanities, Law and Public Administration Masters. The default 25% tuition tier is what the notification frames as "automatic 20% consideration" for Indian applicants entering fee-paying coursework degrees.

What Melbourne Announced for the 2027 Intake

The Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships remain the anchor scheme. Nearly 300 of the 600 annual awards go to international candidates. Coursework Masters draw from the Melbourne Graduate Scholarship and faculty-specific awards.

The auto-consideration rule is the key operational change students should note. Applicants do not fill a separate scholarship form for the flagship awards. The admission file itself is the scholarship file.

What it means for Indian Students: A stronger transcript does two jobs at Melbourne. It clears the admission bar and it lifts you up the scholarship ranking in the same review. Splitting effort between admission essays and separate scholarship essays, which many US applications demand, is not required here.

How Much Are the Awards Worth?

Melbourne’s scholarship pool is tiered by degree type. Research Masters win the deepest package. Coursework Masters win a tuition discount that scales with academic record.

Scheme Value Duration
Graduate Research Scholarship Full tuition offset + AUD 39,500 stipend + OSHC + relocation Up to 2 years (Masters by Research)
Melbourne Graduate Scholarship 25% to 100% tuition remission Length of the Masters programme
International Postgraduate Coursework Award 25% tuition remission (baseline) Length of the Masters programme

At the live rate of ₹67.57 per AUD in August 2026, the AUD 39,500 research stipend converts to about ₹26.69 lakh a year. A 100% tuition waiver on a AUD 50,000 coursework Master’s saves close to ₹33.79 lakh per year. Even the baseline 25% tier trims roughly ₹8.4 lakh off a two-year programme.

Who Qualifies from India?

Melbourne’s academic bar is set high. Indian applicants typically need a 75% to 80% aggregate from a reputable university for competitive scholarship review. A four-year Bachelor’s with honours, or a completed Master’s, strengthens research applications.

  • Coursework Master’s: A three or four-year Bachelor’s in a cognate discipline, plus GRE or GMAT where the faculty asks.
  • Research Master’s: Evidence of research capacity, usually a thesis component or a published paper.
  • English proof: IELTS overall 6.5 with no band under 6.0, or the accepted TOEFL equivalent.

Key Caveat: The 25% baseline remission is a floor, not a ceiling. Faculties push top-decile Indian applicants up to 50%, 75% or full tuition, but the letter arrives only after the offer. Do not budget on the top tier until it is confirmed in writing.

How Do Indian Students Apply?

The route is a single online application through Melbourne’s admissions portal. There is no parallel scholarship track for the flagship awards.

  1. Choose the target Master’s programme on Melbourne’s course finder.
  2. File the course application before 31 October 2026 for Round 1 review.
  3. Upload transcripts, English test scores and any faculty-specific documents.
  4. Research applicants add a proposal and identify a Melbourne supervisor.
  5. Wait for the offer letter, which lists any scholarship attached.

Applications filed after 31 October slide into later rounds. Later-round candidates face a thinner scholarship pool because most awards are locked in Round 1.

What Master’s Tuition Looks Like in Rupees

Melbourne’s Master’s tuition sits between AUD 38,000 and AUD 56,480 a year for international students. Engineering is the ceiling. Humanities and Education sit at the lower end.

Programme band Annual tuition (AUD) INR at ₹67.57/AUD
Humanities, Education AUD 38,000 ₹25.68 lakh
Business, Design AUD 45,000 ₹30.41 lakh
Engineering (upper) AUD 56,480 ₹38.17 lakh

A mid-tier Master’s therefore lands near ₹60 lakh in tuition alone over two years. The 25% baseline award trims that to about ₹45 lakh. A full research fee offset removes tuition entirely and adds the AUD 39,500 stipend on top.

Indian applicants targeting a February 2027 start now have a hard window. Melbourne’s Round 1 file must land by 31 October 2026 to sit in the deepest scholarship pool. The next inflection point after that is the offer letter, which arrives with the scholarship tier already stated. Missing Round 1 does not close the door, but the tuition rebate on offer shrinks sharply.

Action Plan

  1. Lock the target Master’s programme and check its cognate-discipline requirement this week.
  2. Book the IELTS or TOEFL slot before end-September to leave time for the score report.
  3. Draft transcripts, statement and CV in the first half of October.
  4. Research applicants: email two Melbourne faculty for supervisor interest before 15 October.
  5. Submit the full course application on Melbourne’s portal by 31 October 2026.

Keep an Eye On: Melbourne’s Round 1 scholarship cutoff on 31 October 2026. Offer letters with attached scholarship tiers begin landing from late November 2026 for a February 2027 start.
