Program Description

  • The University of Calgary offers a combined degree of MPP/MBA program for a duration of 4 years.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
  • The combined program with the School of Public Policy positions students to be successful in roles at the interface of government and industry such as corporate social responsibility officers, within regulatory bodies and entrepreneurship in non-profit.
  • MPP/MBA students typically complete their first year of studies in the School of Public Policy, the second year in Haskayne, and the third and fourth year combining their studies.
  • To complete the MPP/MBA degree students must complete 17 MBA courses (out of 20), including the 14 required core courses:

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must have a bachelor’s degree (4-year) in a related field from a recognized institution.
  • The related fields include a UG degree in management are Accounting, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Business Management.
  • Following are the GPA condition to admission in masters program:
    • If a student's GPA is above a 3.3 in the last 20 courses of the degree then the student will not require the GMAT score.
    • Students with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.29 may be required to submit the GMAT score.
    • Students with a GPA of 2.70 to 2.99 may be admitted based on presenting an acceptable GMAT score.  

Work Experience Eligibility:

  • Up to 2 years of work experience since the completion of an undergraduate degree is acceptable for admission to this program.
  • The MBA program is open to graduates with any degree and students must have at least 2 years of progressive work experience. 


Students without related academic experience or work experience students are also encouraged to apply, given they have completed the following courses:

  • Accounting
  • Finance and Marketing
  • Business Technology Management

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution
  • Or, completed a 3-year bachelor's degree must hold a master's degree.
  • Or, obtain a CGPA of 8/10 (or 7.5/10 for IIT's only).

Submission of GMAT scores is not compulsory for this program but on certain conditions, it is accepted, however, if students have a GRE score then it is recommended to submit the scores for better a chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work and/or volunteer experience.
  • Transcript: A PDF copy of all post-secondary transcripts within the application or in Carleton Central.
  • Two Letter of Reference: Referees (Teachers, guidance counselors, or Professors) should comment on academics and that references should submit along with the application system.
  • Statement of Intent: Explain the reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • Writing Sample: Students applying for a job, internship, may be asked to provide a writing sample that allows an employer or graduate program to judge student ability to convey a written message.
  • Study proposal: Document proposing a research project, generally in the sciences or academia, and generally constitutes a request for sponsorship of that research.
  • Statement of Purpose: An essay stating the purpose of applying to a particular course at a particular university.
  • Statement of research interests: Student has to fill their interesting research work area in the application form.

VISA & Work Study


  • The students need a study visa to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada.
  • A Study Visa is issued to students by Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and authorizes an individual to study at a designated learning institution in Canada for the duration of the program of study.
  • The Visa is usually valid for the length of the study program, plus an extra 90 days.
  • Students may also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
  • At the time of VISA application, students need to provide various documents:
    • Letter of Acceptance from the University of Calgary 
    • Proof of Financial Support
    • Passport
    • Photograph
    • Medical examination
    • Biometrics

Work Study

Students with a valid Study Visa, enrolled full time are eligible to work on-campus and off-campus.

On-Campus: Students registered as full-time and have a valid Study Visa, may work on-campus 

  • There is no legal restriction on the number of hours to work on-campus, so long as the student remains a full-time student can work on-campus. 
  • Students may also work more than one job. 

Off-Campus: Students are enrolled full-time, have a valid study permit, and are in a program that leads to a UCalgary degree that takes longer than 6 months to complete, they may be eligible to work off-campus.

  • The graduate students can work 20 hours per week off-campus during regular academic sessions of Fall and Winter terms.
  • The undergraduate students can work 20 hours per week off-campus full-time during scheduled breaks. 

Work Permit: A work permit that allows international students to work full-time while still being enrolled full-time. They may only use this work permit to work full-time during their co-op/practicum term(s) in a work.
