Luther College is a university college located in Saskatchewan, Canada. It is located on the campus of the University of Regina and serves as a constituent college of the university.

Despite of being administratively independent, students are awarded degrees from University of Regina. Established in 1913, the college houses approx. 400 students and 50 full-time faculty members. The college is well known for their top notch educational programs in the fields of Arts, Science and Media.

Campus and Residence

The college is located at the campus of University of Regina. It houses academic buildings, residence buildings and cafeteria. Several new buildings have been added to the campus including Dr. William A. Riddell Centre, the Wakpá Tower and Paskw Tower Residences, and the Centre for Kinesiology etc.

The Regina Research Park is located adjacent to the main campus. Several residence halls for students with a capacity to up to 1000 have been built and many more of such are to come.  

Easy Housing and Meal Plans

The Luther College offers residence to all its students. The resident contract spans two semesters. Duration of the same begins from the move-in day to 24 hours after you take your last final exam. Extra fees is charged if someone stays past this duration.

  • One has to sign residence offer and pay a $400 deposit.
  • The college offers two types of meal plans for all students and they can also purchase food at regular price from Luther's Cafeteria or The Connection Cafe.

  • All Luther rooms are private, and fully-furnished alongside amenities like free WiFi, local phone, and laundry.  
  • Your shared lounges have flat screen TVs, game console hookups, DVD players and cable channels to enjoy.
  • The Luther College Residence hosts multiple events throughout the year such as Christmas Dinner, International Night, and Karaoke Night. 

To apply for Luther College Residence, visit the official website and click on the link that says Apply for Residence. From here, select Luther Residence as your first priority and fill out the application form, when re-directed to University of Regina Residence application.

Students are guaranteed a room after signing the residence offer and paying $400 as deposit.

Specialized Luther Programs

Luther offers specialized programs, developed to enhance the University of Regina’s student experience. These programs are open to all University of Regina students.

  • Bundles: Students can choose from optional groups of courses called Bundles. These are designed to give students a good start at the university.
  • English-Science Bundle Plus:  These are English courses with focus on scientific themes. They are uniquely designed for Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology and pre-professional health science students.
  • Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS): Students can take these Luther courses that offer global citizenship, community outreach, and service related learning.
  • Volunteer Sector Studies Network (VSSN): These are for students whose interest is in law, police studies, human justice, criminology, journalism, psychology, and sociology etc.
  • Writing Across the Disciplines (WAD): WAD Coordinator helps students to develop and deliver writing-specific assignments and join workshops to improve communication skills.

Application Process

Steps to Apply for International Students

After you chose a program and verify that you meet all the international admission requirements, you can start your application process at Luther College. In order to apply for Luther College as international student, you must complete these steps:

  • Fill Application Form: Submit the appropriate University of Regina application form either online or offline. When applying, select Luther College as your campus of choice.
  •  Pay the $100 application fee: It is a non-refundable fee and should be paid by credit card. If you don’t have a credit card, go to www.applyregina.peertransfer.com to transfer funds.
  • Submit high school transcripts: An English translation of these documents is required if they are not in English or French. 
  • Submit official transcripts from all previous institutions: An English translation is again required if they are not in English or French and photocopies may also be accepted.
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency (ELP): If you do not have ELP, the college will still issue you a conditional letter of acceptance if you are eligible for admission.

Apart from above-mentioned documents, a copy of your passport is also required along with the application. The offline application and documents must be sent to:

Application Process for Canadian Students

The applications process for domestic admissions is also same and Canadian students also must complete the following steps:

  • Submit Application Form: Submit the University of Regina application form Online or Offline.
  • Pay the application fee: The application is same $100 and can be paid by cash, cheque, money order, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
  • Submit high school transcripts: High school students can provide an interim grade report and Saskatchewan resident students must also provide a schedule of planned courses.
  • Submit transcripts: If original transcripts are not available, photocopies may be accepted.

Getting a Study Permit

International students need to provide a valid study permit for admission at Luther College. The study permit allows them to study at the university and for a student visa that is required to remain in Canada depending on their citizenship.

Candidates should apply for the student visa as soon as they are accepted by the college.  

  • Visit www.cic.gc.ca for information on student visas to enter Canada.
  • Apply for the study permit at Immigration Refugees and Citizenship office Canada.
  • You can also apply at any nearest Visa application center as well.

After Admission

After completing all the necessary steps of Admission process students must complete the items below to ensure that they are prepared for studies.

  • Activate UR Self-Service account- Go to www.uregina.ca and click UR Self-Service at the top. The USER ID is your student number and PIN is your birthdate in DDMMYY format.
  • Set-up your Email Account- All communication will be sent to the email address assigned to you after admission. Go to www.uregina.ca and click Webmail to setup the account.
  • Meet with your Luther Academic Advisor- Select your Advisor to help you choose the courses that best meet your requirements. They can register for courses at advising appointment or online at UR Self-Service.
  • Apply to Luther Residence- You can apply online at www.luthercollege.edu/residence or call at 306.585.5333 or 1.800.LUTHERU for details or to take a tour of residence.
  • Apply for Student Loans- Students should apply online for scholarships and loans after June 1.
  • Register for Orientation- Register for Luther University Preparation Program at www.luthercollege.edu/uprep. UPrep is Luther’s three-day introduction to university programs with academic activities and social events.

Tuition Fee

The tuition fee charged by Luther College vary from course to course and the place of residence of the student. The tuition depends upon the type of course, you are choosing and it is lower if you choose for a minimum credit semester plan.

  • Students can expect to pay between $1,000 - $2,000 a year for textbooks and course materials.

Note: The Luther College Residence also offers a discount on housing fees. Students can save up to $225 if they pay by August 15 (fall) and/or by December 15 (winter semester).  

Scholarships

Luther College offers $100,000 in awards to students each year. The application for scholarship opens on March 15 and closes on May 15 and awards are applied in fall semester account. Following table shows various scholarship/awards offered by the university:

Work Study Program

Luther College employs students on campus as per their capabilities. If you are interested in exploring an employment opportunity with Luther College, you should demonstrate financial need.

Things to keep in mind:

  • The student will have to do a part-time job on-campus which must not exceed 10 hours per week.
  • Student Success Workshops and Learning Skills Consultations provide assistance for work to all students.
  • The stipend paid to the student must not exceed the tuition fees paid by the student during the same year.
  • Tasks assigned to the students are related to their area of study in order to gain professional experience.

Off-Campus work programs

The off-campus work opportunities are very similar to the on-campus work but have a few small differences.

  • An internship allows you placement for either twelve or sixteen months with one employer.
  • You are required to work for a longer period of time.
  • Many employers even prefer to hire students as a "test-run" and in future make them permanent once they complete the degree.

Work after graduation

Luther College offers the UR Guarantee Program that will support you through each step from study to a successful career. Get your permits ready before applying for UR Guarantee program. Following are its key points:

  • There are no criteria and all students can participate in the UR Guarantee Program.
  • It gives students access to professional development opportunities and social events.
  • It connects you with volunteer opportunities on campus and outside as well.

Note: If you complete all elements of the UR Guarantee program and still do not get an employment within six months of graduation, you will be eligible for another year of classes free of charge.

How to get a SIN?

International students require a Social Identity Number (SIN) in order to work after graduation in Canada. This is a mandatory number for tax purposes and work permit in Canada. A SIN is valid up to a max 5 years and can be renewed if needed. SIN can be obtained by going in person to Service Canada office along with the following documents:

  • Passport,
  • Study permit and visa,
  • Work permit.
