University of Ottawa Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants meet uOttawa’s baseline through Class 12 (CBSE, ISC, or state board) for undergraduate entry and a recognised bachelor’s degree for postgraduate entry, plus verified English proficiency.
Postgraduate (Master’s) requirements:
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 70% to 75% or CGPA 7.0/10 to 7.5/10 (recommended); 3-year Indian bachelor’s typically requires a qualifying year or bridging module
- English test: IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) or TOEFL iBT 86 with 22 in writing; PTE and Duolingo also accepted
- Credential verification: WES or IQAS ECA report for master’s applicants; transcripts must be sealed and dispatched by the Indian university
- Standout: Telfer MBA requires GMAT 550+ or GRE equivalent plus 2 to 3 years of work experience
Undergraduate requirements:
- Academic: Class 12 with 77.75% overall (recommended); Engineering, Nursing and Biomedical Science need 78% to 80% with specified science and maths subjects
- English test: IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) or TOEFL iBT 86 (writing 22); English-medium Class 12 study of 3+ years may qualify for a waiver
- Documents: Class 10 and 12 marksheets, passport copy, statement of purpose, English proficiency report
Key insight: An IELTS waiver is possible for Indian applicants who studied full-time in an English-medium school for the last three years and can produce a formal letter from the school confirming the medium of instruction.
University of Ottawa Acceptance Rate 2027
uOttawa runs a moderately selective admission pool with an estimated acceptance rate of 42% (estimated). The figure is not officially published by the university; the estimate is derived from applicant-to-offer ratios reported by third-party admission trackers.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 42% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 | 42% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2024 | 43% (estimated) | Marginal tightening |
Engineering, Nursing and Telfer’s BCom cohort face tighter admission bars than the university-wide average. Arts, Social Sciences and general Science admit at rates that exceed 50% for well-qualified Indian applicants meeting the recommended academic bands.
Reality check: A 42% acceptance rate looks approachable, but the number pools all faculties; Indian applicants targeting Telfer BCom or BASc Engineering should treat effective selectivity as sub-25% and lift their Class 12 scores past 85%.

University of Ottawa vs Peer Universities
uOttawa competes head-to-head with mid-tier Canadian research universities on rank, price and Indian-student outcomes; Toronto and Waterloo are the aspirational stretch peers.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Ottawa | #228 | #142 | CAD 30,000 (INR 20.9 lakh) | Bilingual capital campus, strong Law and Medicine |
| Carleton University | #571 | #178 | CAD 27,000 (INR 18.8 lakh) (estimated) | Journalism and public policy specialisation |
| Western University | #118 | #96 | CAD 34,000 (INR 23.6 lakh) (estimated) | Ivey Business School brand |
| University of Waterloo | #115 | #71 | CAD 35,000 (INR 24.3 lakh) (estimated) | Co-op tech pipeline, largest engineering school |

| University of Toronto | #25 | #22 | CAD 45,000 (INR 31.3 lakh) (estimated) | Canada’s top research and global brand |
uOttawa’s edge over Carleton is its Law and Medicine faculties plus Telfer’s federal-consulting pipeline; against Waterloo and Toronto, uOttawa wins on price and admission accessibility for Indian applicants with mid-band Class 12 or bachelor’s scores.
University of Ottawa suits Indian students who want a mid-tier research Canadian degree at a moderate price and value proximity to federal-government, tech and consulting recruiters; the Telfer MBA and Master of Computer Science deliver the strongest ROI, with total investment of CAD 60,000 to 68,000 (INR 41.7 to 47.3 lakh) against a median post-study work salary above CAD 90,000.
uOttawa is not the right pick for Indian students chasing top-100 QS brands, high-frequency co-op placements, or a purely English-speaking city; Waterloo suits co-op-first tech candidates better, while Toronto and Western remain the aspirational picks for Indian applicants with 90%+ Class 12 scores.

Ans. University of Ottawa offers over 100 English-taught master’s programs across Engineering, Computer Science, Business, Law, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences. Popular English-medium options for Indian students include the Master of Computer Science (with an Applied AI concentration), Master of Engineering in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical, Master of Science in Nursing, Telfer MBA, Master of Communication, and Master of Law (LLM). All of these accept IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 86 in place of French proficiency.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at uOttawa?
Ans. Yes, Indian students holding a valid Canadian study permit can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during regular academic terms and full-time during scheduled breaks such as winter and summer holidays. On-campus employment carries no hourly cap. uOttawa’s Career Development Centre lists on-campus jobs, research assistantships and teaching assistantships, with typical hourly wages between CAD 16 and CAD 25 depending on the role and academic level.
Ques. Does University of Ottawa waive GMAT or GRE for Indian MBA and MEng applicants?
Ans. The Telfer MBA can waive GMAT or GRE for Indian applicants who hold a CFA, CPA, or another recognised professional qualification, or who have at least eight years of managerial work experience. Some MEng and MCS specialisations at uOttawa do not require GRE at all, though a strong quantitative bachelor’s transcript (CGPA 7.5/10 or higher) is expected. Waiver decisions are made case by case by the admissions committee.
Ques. What is the application fee at University of Ottawa for Indian applicants?
Ans. Undergraduate applicants applying through OUAC pay CAD 156 (INR 10,847) for the base application plus CAD 50 per additional program choice. Direct graduate applications through the uOttawa portal cost CAD 110 (INR 7,648) per program for master’s and doctoral applicants. Application fees are non-refundable and must be paid by international credit card at the time of submission; waiver options are not available for Indian applicants.
Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise University of Ottawa?
Ans. University of Ottawa is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) recognised by all major Indian public and private lenders. Indian students routinely secure loans from SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, Axis Bank, Avanse and Auxilo, with loan tickets covering full tuition plus living costs up to INR 1.5 crore. Ques. What dependent visa rules apply to Indian students at uOttawa?
Ans. Indian students admitted to full-time master’s or doctoral programs at uOttawa can bring their spouse on an open work permit, allowing the spouse to work full-time for any Canadian employer during the program. Dependent children can accompany the student on a study permit that allows enrolment in Ontario public schools without additional international fees. Financial proof requires an additional CAD 4,000 for the spouse and CAD 3,000 per child on top of the primary applicant’s balance.
Ques. How does uOttawa handle conditional offers for Indian applicants?
Ans. uOttawa issues conditional offers to Indian applicants whose Class 12 or bachelor’s results are pending, whose English proficiency score is below the minimum threshold, or whose bachelor’s is a 3-year Indian degree needing bridging. Conditional English-language offers route applicants through the English Intensive Program, running 8 to 36 weeks depending on entry score. Applicants must clear all conditions by the deadline stated in the offer letter, typically 30 days before program start.
Ques. What transcript verification steps do Indian applicants need for uOttawa?
Ans. Undergraduate applicants must send Class 10 and 12 marksheets and pass certificates directly from CBSE, ISC or the state board, either in sealed envelopes or via the board’s official digital dispatch. Master’s and PhD applicants need a WES (World Education Services) or IQAS course-by-course Educational Credential Assessment, plus original transcripts sent under seal from the Indian university. Booking the WES evaluation eight to twelve weeks ahead of the application deadline prevents last-minute delays.

- Vast options to choose a program, student friendly faculty with higher qualifications, renowned public university with 175+ years of history.
Dislikes
- The tuition fee for Internationals, limited scholarships
Campus Life
- Infrastructure is very stunning with excellent amenities. The campus has almost everything, including facilities, sports, a gym, and activities.
Fees
- 1 CAD - Canadian Dollar ($) = INR 63 ish. Per credit it is around $1500. Each course carries 3 credits. So it would be around $4500 per course. Total would be $45,000 only for the course fee. Most programmes require 10 courses to finish the programme; 90% of the courses have options to choose, like electives, and 10% of the courses are mandatory. UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan), which is mandatory for every year as a student, would be around $800 per year.
- Other fees include gym, sports, association, and student pass (U-Pass) for public transport, which are included but still can be excluded later from the office. These fees would be up to $400.
- Considering the miscellaneous expenses associated only with the university programme, the total can be rounded off to $50,000 which would be around INR3.3M. Additionally, the federal government passed an order for a $20,300 GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) amount, which should be paid to the federal government before lodging the visa while paying the tuition fee back in India. This amount will be deposited back to the student's account for 1 year as a security amount for student expenses in equal amounts monthly. Technically, the GIC amount comes back to our account.

- High knowledgeable lecturers who teaches so well
- Curriculum is very good and well planned
- So much of practical knowledge by having many projects instead of just exams
Dislikes
- Classes for each course was in different building and the campus is huge and hard to walk
- Some of the lectures was bit difficult to understand in the beginning as the course was little intense and hard to catch but later with some self study it was fine
- Lecturers English accent differs by each and that was difficult in the beginning but later it was fine again
Campus Life
- It’s just in Ottawa and that’s the only campus but I got to go to Carleton university for few of my courses as it was a joint university with my university.
- We had so many sports and clubs to participate and it was a wholesome experience as there are other students from different countries across the world which gave a massive exposure and good friends
Fees
- Fees are charged per semester and it was around $8000-$9000 CAD in 2020 & 2021.
- I chose to stay on my own by renting an apartment and sharing it with 2 others.
- The rent for an individual was $350 CAD and $80 for the utilities and WiFi and the food and other expenses were around $400.
- It’s good to do part time and take care of our expenses and I did Teaching Assistant part time which helped me to manage my expenses and I got this job in my university itself

- Location of the campus. It is located in downtown which allows you to travel freely.
- Fee-structure: because of per-credit fee structure it allows student to take course as per their capacity.
- Co-ops opportunities allows a student to do an internship which will benefit them in future.
Dislikes
- Lecture time length, sometime lectures are 3 hours long.
- Lecture time, some lecture starts in evening and over at late night.
- Expensive living cost around university.
Campus Life
3 campuses, which are located close to the main campus. My university has a very good library and lots of study rooms. There are many clubs which you can join. And all the possible facilities you want are there.

- University of Ottawa is one of the highest research output universities in Canada.
- The learning is mostly practical instead of theoretical in form if assignments real life projects, including group and individual work.
- The university takes efforts to engage various programs like career fairs, networking events, hackathon etc.
Dislikes
- The university dining does not necessarily offer food that relishes your palette (especially Indian)
- Getting TA positions can be tough sometimes since there are no Scholarship options for non research based programs.
- The learning is mostly self directed and not necessarily guided by the professors as personal attention.
Campus Life
- The campus has 3 locations
- Main campus which includes Telfer
- 200 Lees Campus
- Ottawa health campus
- The campus has medical facilities only for students and it is covered for free by Uhip although it takes a long time to get an appointment. The campus also has small food joints and cafes. There are 2 gyms at the main campus, swimming, basketball, football court, ice hockey area etc.
- Panda fest is a very popular sports activity at Inter University. The university also has clubs that organise Indian festivals like Holi, Diwali and there are major celebrations like Halloween parties.
- The university has a student council for graduate students named PDI and they organise various networking events and cultural activities.
Fees
- The tuition fees are based on the number of credits. In my course, it was mandatory to complete 30 credits. Every course is 3 credits and costs around 4000 dollars so 30 credits are 40000 CAD.
- I did not opt for university accommodation but I stayed in a shared space nearby which was 500 CAD a month. A private space or room may go upto 900-1000 CAD a month
- Credit based which you pay before each semester starts upto 1000 dollars a month

- I received admission offer from this university and global ranking is good.
- The university is one of the top rated institutes and thus students get good exposure in terms of research, jobs etc. There is a huge range of courses to choose from based on student's interests. The Infrastructure and Legacy of the university is awesome.
Dislikes
- Sometimes there is over emphasis over research candidates than course based candidates, so the number of scholarships, teaching assistant positions etc. are more suitable for research based students than course based.
