CMC Vellore Admission FAQs

Ques. Is NEET UG mandatory for all programmes at CMC Vellore?

Ans. NEET UG is mandatory for MBBS, BPT, BOT, and BSc Nursing at the Chittoor campus. BSc Nursing at the Vellore campus uses CMC’s own two-step entrance and does not require NEET UG. Other allied health science programmes use CMC’s own Step 1 CBT and Step 2 interview. Always confirm the specific requirement at admissions.cmcvellore.ac.in for the programme you are applying to.

Ques. Does the CMC Vellore service bond apply to open category MBBS students?

Ans. Yes. The 2-year service obligation is mandatory for all admitted students at CMC Vellore without exception. Open category MBBS students admitted through Tamil Nadu DME state counselling must serve at CMC Vellore or a designated network unit. This is not specific to Minority Network seats. It is a condition of admission for every programme and every category.

Ques. What is the Minority Network category and who can apply?

Ans. The Minority Network category has 38 MBBS management seats for Christian candidates. Applicants must hold a recommendation from a CMC Vellore-approved church or Christian mission organisation. Selection within the category is based solely on NEET UG rank. A 2-year service posting to a remote mission hospital is mandatory for all Minority Network admits. No capitation fee is charged.

Ques. What NEET score is needed for CMC Vellore open category MBBS?

Ans. CMC Vellore has only 2 open management quota MBBS seats, making competition very high. Candidates typically need above 650 marks in NEET UG to secure one of these 2 seats based on past year trends. For government quota seats (50 seats via Tamil Nadu DME), the effective cutoff is lower and depends on Tamil Nadu state counselling ranks and applicable reservation categories.

Ques. What is the annual fee for MBBS at CMC Vellore?

Ans. The annual tuition fee is INR 3,000. A one-time college fee of INR 18,000 and a one-time university fee of INR 14,985 are charged at admission. Annual institutional charges are INR 48,345. The total cost of the 4.5-year academic phase is among the lowest of any private deemed medical college in India. Hostel and mess charges are additional. Visit admissions.cmcvellore.ac.in for the current official fee schedule.

Ques. How many MBBS seats does CMC Vellore have and how are they distributed?

Ans. CMC Vellore has 100 MBBS seats per year. Of these, 50 go through Tamil Nadu DME state counselling. The remaining 50 management seats include 2 Open (All India, no church recommendation required), 38 Minority Network (Christian candidates with CMC-approved church recommendation), and 10 CMC Staff quota seats. All 100 seats require a qualifying NEET UG score.

Ques. Can students from outside Tamil Nadu apply for CMC Vellore MBBS?

Ans. Yes. Candidates from any state can apply. The 50 government quota seats go through Tamil Nadu DME counselling, which processes candidates from other states subject to Tamil Nadu’s quota rules. The 2 All India Open management seats are open to all eligible candidates across India. Minority Network and Staff quota seats are also open to candidates from any state who meet the category requirements.

Ques. How is DM or MCh admission handled at CMC Vellore?

Ans. CMC Vellore is a deemed private university. Under central government rules, MCC conducts counselling for 100% of DM, MCh, and DrNB-SS superspeciality seats at all deemed universities including CMC Vellore. Candidates cannot be admitted through a college-level process for these programmes. Register with MCC at mcc.nic.in after the NEET SS result and fill CMC Vellore as a choice.

Ques. Does CMC Vellore offer direct admission or a donation-based management seat?

Ans. No. CMC Vellore does not offer donation-based or capitation-fee admission under any category. The 2 open management seats and 38 Minority Network seats are all NEET-merit-based. The college officially states that no agents are authorised and no donation is accepted. Any approach claiming to offer a direct seat at CMC Vellore is fraudulent.

Ques. What is the selection process for BSc Nursing at the Vellore campus?

How do people prepare for the CMC, Vellore UG entrance exam?

Namrata Das
Monica ChowdhuryChristian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore

Honestly, there is no specific strategy to prepare for the CMC Vellore UG entrance exam. It’s more than enough if you are preparing properly for the AIPMT. Also, I will suggest you follow just one reference book thoroughly. Arrange as many mocks as you can before the exams and also time yourself. Usually, very basic questions are asked and focus is given to speed rather than complexity. I have many friends living near Vellore who took coaching at a college called Voorhees in Vellore to prepare for CMC.

In addition to academic preparation, students should also focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, to ensure they are in good physical and mental health for the exam.

Hope this helps you!

Which is better, CMC Vellore or AFMC? Which college would provide me an assured seat in PG?

Chinmayi SrivatsaLives in Chennai

Without any second thoughts, choose AFMC over CMC because it ranks higher than most other medical colleges in the country. AFMC provides excellent exposure and opportunities to its students both in terms of academics as well as research. The most appealing aspect of the institute is that it’s a government college so the tuition is almost free of cost. CMC on the other hand is a private medical college that charges a high fee.

Although there isn’t a guarantee of a PG seat in any medical college, I can say that if you have done MBBS in AFMC then your chances of getting a PG seat are very high.

Overall, the top-notch academic ambiance and the highly qualified faculty pool make it an excellent choice and therefore should certainly be considered over CMC Vellore.

What are the tasks and questions asked in the CMC, Vellore interview? Can you elaborate about your interview experience?

Namrata Das
Cecelia Jonesstudied at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore (2020)

There is no fixed pattern for the interview conducted by CMC Vellore in the last stage of the admission process. Usually, the shortlisted candidates are categorized into groups of 5 or 6, Boys and Girls, separately. There are 2 group observers for each group, called G.O. Students have to go through a number of individual tasks, group tasks, group discussions, and multiple interviews with their group observers.

  • Individual Tasks : These include a combination of complex and simple tasks man to evaluate your intellect to identify the doable tasks instead of focusing on the undoable tasks. This actually is the medical concept of triage wherein during an emergency, the doctor should prioritize the patient for whom their immediate care would mean a difference between life and death.
  • Group Task: These may include building a school classroom with the materials provided in a limited time period of course. This task evaluates your communication skills and your organization skills. These skills are crucial for saving a patient's life during the time of an emergency.
  • Interviews: These are conducted to ensure you answer the same questions asked by different interviewers smartly. The most common question asked is “Why did you choose medicine”.

Hope you make it to CMC Vellore, one of the best medical colleges in India.

What is the reputation of CMC Vellore abroad? Do we get paid during the bond period there for two years?

Namrata Das
Cecelia Jonesstudied at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore (2020)

CMC Vellore enjoys a good reputation abroad and you are highly regarded wherever you go. However, you might be considered highly by the Indians staying abroad and not the locals because they hardly know about CMC. People might not be familiar with your college if you are working with a multinational set of colleagues.

Coming to the second part of your question, yes, you do get paid during the bond period of 2 years but the salary depends on your sponsoring body. Some sponsoring bodies have more funds than others so you might not receive a salary equal to your friends. The primary goal is to serve the community so your focus should be social service and not monetary gains. Moreover, the hands-on experience and exposure you get are unmatched and improve your skills a lot and also improve your job opportunities. So, keep money on the back pedestal and work hard to serve society!

What is an explanation for the sponsorship procedure for admission in CMC Vellore?

Monica ChowdhuryChristian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore

You can be sponsored only by the organizations mentioned in the sponsorship list. Moreover, being a Christian is not enough and even Catholics are treated equally to non-Christians when applying. From what I know, CMC is run by a group of churches and if you apply via one of these, you have a good chance of getting sponsored.

The truth is these are just formal guidelines and to be sponsored all you need is genuine passion to serve the community. If you are passionate about social service your grades and even religion won't be a hindrance in your path. I have seen many exceptional cases, so what stops you from becoming one?

Which is currently the best medical college after AIIMS Delhi and CMC Vellore?

Namrata Das
Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

The criteria for the best college may vary from person to person depending on your hometown, your goals, and your interests. Rankings alone cannot define a college as best or worst. Rankings-wise, AIIMS Delhi is considered to be the best medical college in India. But logically speaking it isn’t a very good choice for a South Indian who would have to travel away from their homeland and work again as hard to secure a PG seat. For them, JIPMER is a much better choice with an internal PG quota advantage and proximity to home.

Moreover, if you are a North Indian, CMC Vellore isn’t a very good choice either as you will have to travel away from home, learn a new language, and establish bonds. So for them, MAMC or VMMC is a better option. So the best college actually depends on what you want to do after college. For instance, AIIMS Delhi is a great choice if you want to pursue the USMLE route. It will provide excellent exposure and opportunities to its students.

In my opinion, the best options after AIIMS and CMC Vellore are JIPMER>MAMC>Seth GS, Mumbai>AFMC. These colleges are considered among the top 5 in the country after AIIMS and CMC Vellore.
