The change in the position or displacement of a particle divided by the time interval in which the displacement occurs is called the velocity of that particle.

  • It is a vector quantity
  • The SI unit of velocity is meter per second (ms-1)
  • The dimensional formula for velocity is [ M0 L T-1 ]

Uniform velocity: When a body covers an equal distance in an equal interval of time in a known direction, no matter how small the interval may be, then the velocity of the body is said to be uniform velocity.

Examples of uniform velocity:

  • Rotational motion of the earth
  • Movement of hands of a clock
  • Rotation of the moon around the earth

The change of velocity of a particle divided by the time interval in which that change occurred is called the acceleration of that particle.

  • It is a vector quantity
  • The SI unit of acceleration is meter per second square (ms-2)
  • The dimensional formula for acceleration is [ M0 L T-2 ]

Uniform acceleration: The motion of the body is said to be uniformly accelerated if the amount of change in its velocity in equal intervals of time will be constant

Examples of uniform acceleration:

  • The motion of a freely falling body and a vertically thrown-up body
  • A kid sliding down from the slider
  • A ball rolling down an inclined plane.
