The muscular and skeletal systems of the body function in a synchronized way, enabling the movement and locomotion of an individual.

  • A disorder in either the skeletal or muscular system can significantly disrupt the function of both systems.
  • Such disorders that affect both the muscular system as well as the skeletal system are termed Musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Some disorders of the muscular and skeletal system include Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Tendinitis, Fibromyalgia, and Bone fractures.

Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness and paralysis because of the inability of the neuromuscular junction to transmit enough signals from the nerve fibers to the muscle fibers.

Tetany

Tetany is a symptom characterized by involuntary muscle cramps or spasms. It often occurs due to abnormal imbalances in the body's electrolytes, particularly a deficiency of calcium.

Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular dystrophy is a syndrome that occurs due to genetic mutation and is characterized by progressive muscle weakness and muscular degeneration.

  • One specific type of muscular dystrophy is Duchenne's muscular dystrophy (DMD).
  • It is caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, which is located on the X chromosome.
  • This results in the absence of a protein called dystrophin from muscle cells.
  • It is an X-linked genetic disorder that mainly affects males.
  • It occurs in approximately 1 in every 3,500 newborn males.

Sprain and strain

Sprains and strains are common muscular injuries, but they affect different parts of the body.

  • Sprains involve injuries to the ligaments, the tough bands of tissue that connect bones at joints.
  • A sprain typically occurs when a joint is twisted beyond its normal range of motion.
  • Strains, on the other hand, affect muscles or tendons, the fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones.
  • They occur when a muscle or tendon is overstretched or torn due to excessive force or repetitive movements.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common bone disease characterized by a decrease in bone density that increases the risk of fractures.

  • It mainly affects adults, particularly older adults, but can also occur in pregnant women.
  • Osteoporosis develops when the body loses bone mass faster than it can create new bone.

Gout is a type of metabolic disease characterized by high levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia).

  • This excess uric acid can form deposits in various tissues such as joints, in cartilages, under the skin, and in soft tissues such as renal tubules.
  • These deposits of uric acid crystals, especially in joints, can trigger a sudden and severe inflammatory response.
  • This response leads to symptoms such as joint inflammation, joint swelling, and kidney stones.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves inflammation of one or more joints. There are over 100 different forms of arthritis.

  • The most common form is osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), which is the result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age.
  • Other arthritis forms are rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and related autoimmune diseases.
  • The major symptom of arthritis is constant pain which is usually localized in the affected joint area.
  • The other symptoms include the inability to use the hand or walk, malaise and a feeling of tiredness, fever, weight loss, insomnia, muscle aches, pains and weakness, tenderness, and difficulty in moving the joint.

Dislocations and fractures

Dislocations and fractures are both common bone disorders.

  • Dislocations occur when a bone is forced out of its normal position at a joint.
  • This can happen due to a sudden impact, fall, or twist.
  • Fractures involve a break in the bone, which can range from a hairline crack to a complete break.

Osteomalacia and Rickets

Osteomalacia and rickets are bone diseases caused by a lack of vitamin D.

  • Osteomalacia is an adult form of vitamin D deficiency.
  • It leads to inadequate mineralization of bones, making them weak and prone to fractures.
  • Rickets affects children whose bones are still developing.
  • Similar to osteomalacia, it results in soft, weak bones due to inadequate calcium absorption.

Ques. What is the major difference between Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis? (2 Marks)

Ans. Osteoarthritis can affect both the larger and smaller joints of the body. Osteoarthritis mostly occurs in people aged 65 years.

Rheumatoid arthritis occurs in people aged 20 and above. In this type of disorder, the body's own immune system starts to attack body tissues. The attack is not only directed at the joints but at many other parts of the body.

An increase in the level of serum uric acid in the body is characterized by urinary excretion of uric acid. It usually is one of the main symptoms of a condition called Gout.

Ans. The two types of Muscular dystrophy are-

  • Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy
  • Becker’s muscular dystrophy

Second Answer: Muscular dystrophy is a group of more than 30 genetic disorders that cause weakness and other related symptoms in the muscle. The condition can be present at birth, develop in childhood, or adulthood depending on the type.

Ans. Muscle cramps and spasms are the two symptoms of hypocalcemia.

Second Answer: Excessive lack of calcium in the body is termed hypocalcemia. Calcium plays an important role in membrane integrity and excitability. When the extracellular fluid (ECF) concentration of calcium ions falls below normal, the nervous system becomes progressively more excitable because this causes increased neuronal membrane permeability to sodium ions, allowing easy initiation of action potentials. At plasma calcium ion concentrations of about 50% below normal, the peripheral nerve fibers become so excitable that they begin to discharge spontaneously, initiating a series of nerve impulses that pass to the peripheral skeletal muscles to elicit tetanic muscle contractions. Thus, hypocalcemia causes tetany.

Ans. Osteoarthritis cannot be cured, but one can prevent the condition from worsening. Physical therapy to strengthen muscles and joints is very helpful. For some patients, weight loss can reduce the stress on the joints. When the disease is far advanced and the pain is continuous, surgery may be an option. The joint replacement does help many individuals with osteoarthritis.

Ans. A fracture in the vertebrae with compression causing kyphosis leads to the formation of a widow’s hump, which deforms the back acquiring a hump-like shape. It occurs mostly in old aged women suffering from osteoporosis.

This condition causes an abnormal curvature of the upper spine, resulting in a noticeable bump at the base of the neck. It can lead to symptoms like neck pain, shoulder pain, and discomfort between the shoulder blades.

Ans. The structure that connects two bones is a ligament. Ligaments are strong, fibrous connective tissues that bind bones together at joints. They provide stability and limit the range of motion at a joint.

Ans. The human skeleton is the internal framework that supports and protects our bodies.  It consists of around 206 bones in adulthood. However, newborns are born with approximately 270 bones. This difference arises because some bones fuse together during childhood and adolescence as part of normal growth and development.

Second Answer: The skeletal system functions as the basic framework of a body and the entire body are built around the hard framework of Skeleton. It consists of all the bones, cartilages, and joints working together. These bones are the hard structures that make up most of the rigid or solid parts of our body.
