GRE Registration 2020, Dates, Documents Required, Fee and Exam Centers

    GRE score is accepted widely in thousands of graduate schools and business schools all over the world. There are two formats for GRE General Test– Computer Delivered Test or Paper Delivered Test. Subject tests are only available in Paper-delivered format upto thrice a year. Before you start the process of registration for GRE 2020-21, it’s important you understand the step-by-step procedure.  

    • Registration for GRE computer-delivered General test can be done online, by phone or via mail.
    • Registration for GRE paper delivered General test or a Subject test can be done online or by mail. Check GRE Exam Dates
    • GRE General Test registration fee is $205 ( except in Australia, China, Nigeria and Turkey).
    • GRE Subject Test Registration Fee worldwide is $150.

    Paper- delivered General test is conducted in those areas where the computer-delivered test is not available, it is administered up to twice a year in November and February. GRE Subject Tests are offered at paper-delivered test centers worldwide up to three times a year. The test dates are tabulated below:

    GRE Registration Instructions

    Candidates can register for GRE online itself. However, before registering for GRE, candidates are advised to go through the instructions given below:

    • If you have any health related problems, follow the health need procedure guided by ETS.
    • Candidate must bring the valid and acceptable ID proof at the test centre.
    • Make sufficient time when you choose your test centre and time for score reporting to meet the admission deadlines.
    • Choose the graduate institutes and fellowship sponsors you want to aaply to.
    • You must know about FREE GRE service while signing up for search service in GRE test registration.
    • Make sure that your ID documents match the name of your account.

    ID requirements for GRE General and Subject test

    While signing up with the ETS account, a candidate is required to submit any valid ID proof for name used in the account. General instructions about ID requirements are:

    • It must be an original document, photocopies will not be accepted.
    • It must not be expired and should be valid.
    • It should bear the full name of the candidate.
    • It must be a government- issued identity proof. 
    • It should have a clear and recent photograph of the candidate.
    • It should have candidate’s signature.

    How to Create an ETS Account?

    In order to apply for GRE test, candidate is first required to create an ETS account. To create the ETS account, follow the simple steps:

    • Go to the website www.ets.org/mygre
    • Click on ‘Create an Account’

    • Fill in the Information asked. The name you submit in the ETS Account must same as that on your passport.
    • Select a username a password of your choice. Choose a security question and enter an answer that you can easily remember.
    • Review the information you have provided. If you need to make any corrections, Click on “Back” and make the edits.
    • If no edits are required, Click on “Submit”.
    • Your account is created.

    GRE Registration for Computer-delivered GRE General Test

    ETS provides three different ways for candidates to register for GRE general test. 

    Online registration: To register online, candidate has to follow the below mentioned simple steps:

    • Create an ETS account
    • Give two dates before your preferred date.
    • Now pay for the GRE exam fee.
    • Candidates can pay through credit or debit cards branded with the logo of American express, Discover, JCB, Master card or Visa card.
    • PayPal and e check services are also acceptable.
    • If you are from China, you can refer to the NEEA accounts for payment of the GRE test fee.
    • If you are from Nigeria, then you can pay through visa card, PayPal or voucher numbers only.

    Phone registration: Candidates can also register via phone. For registering via phone, follow the given steps:

    • Candidates residing in United States, Guam, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada can call on 1-443-751-4820 or 1-800-473-2255 to register
    • Candidates in all other parts of world can call on RRC number.
    • Candidates need to register atleast two business days before their preferred test date. 
    • Now pay for the GRE exam fee.
    • Candidates can pay through credit or debit cards branded with the logo of American express, Discover, JCB, Master card or Visa card.
    • PayPal and e check services are also acceptable.
    • If you are from china, you can refer to the NEEA accounts for payment of the GRE test fee.
    • If you are from Nigeria, then you can pay through visa card, PayPal or voucher numbers only.

    Registering via Mail: For registering online by mail, you will need authorization voucher by mail. Folloe the steps given below:

    • Fill the computer delivered GRE general test authorization voucher form and pay for the exam fee via paper check or money order.
    • After receiving the voucher, register online at www.ets/org/mygre, call at the prometric numbers to schedule appointment, or call at the respective RRC at www.ets.org/gre/rrc to schedule an appointment. 

    GRE Registration for Paper-delivered General Test or a Subject Test

    ETS provides two different ways to candidates to register for GRE general test. 

    Online registration: To register online, candidate has to follow the below mentioned simple steps:

    • Create an ETS account.
    • Now pay for the GRE exam fee.
    • Candidates can pay through credit or debit cards branded with the logo of American express, Discover, JCB, Master card or Visa card.
    • PayPal and e check services are also acceptable.
    • If you are from china, you can refer to the NEEA accounts for payment of the GRE test fee.
    • If you are from Nigeria, then you can pay through visa card, PayPal or voucher numbers only.

    Mail registration: For registering online by mail, you will need authorization voucher by mail. For registering via mail, follow step given below:

    • Fill the computer delivered GRE general test authorization voucher form and pay for the exam fee via paper check or money order.
    • After receiving the voucher, register online or call at the prometric numbers to schedule appointment.

    Testing arrangements for GRE test

    Candidate must choose his GRE test center carefully. While registering for GRE test centers, candidates have following options.

    • He can ask for supplement centre if he lives more than 125 miles or 201 kms from any nearest center.
    • There is an option of Monday testing too. This is only for those candidates whose religious convictions prevent them for testing on Saturday. For giving test on Monday, candidate is required to register and mail his Registration Form for the GRE Subject Tests, fees and letter signed by his cleric on letterhead stationery confirming the affiliation with a recognized religious body whose convictions prevent the candidate from testing on Saturday.
    • There is standby testing also. It is available if sufficient space test materials and staff are available at the test center.

    GRE is held at approximately 1,000 centers over 160 countries. You can look up your test center for GRE 2020-21 by following the given steps:

    For GRE Computer- delivered General Test

    • Go to the official GRE website – ets.org/gre
    • Click the link for “Test Centers and Dates”, as shown in the following image:

    • The following page shall appear, you can find your test center by filling in the details.

    • Under Paper-delivered GRE General Test, click on the ‘Paper delivered Test Center List’ link.

    The GRE general test has different fee and GRE subject test has different fee. Also, GRE exam fee is differs from country to country. Given below is the exam fee in US dollars:

    Mode of payment

    The GRE enables many modes of payment to pay for the GRE exam fee. For GRE general test the preferred modes of payment are given below:

    For Computer-delivered tests:

    1. Credit/debit card: Candidates can pay through credit or debit cards branded with the logo of American express, Discover, JCB, Master card or Visa card.
    2. PayPal: Candidate can also pay through this mode if suitable.
    3. E-check service: Candidates have this option to pay as well but the service must be drawn against US banks only.
    4. Money order/ certified check or voucher.
    5. If the candidate is from china, he can refer to the NEEA accounts for payment of the GRE test fee.
    6. If the candidate is from Nigeria, then he can pay through visa card, PayPal or voucher numbers only.

    For Paper-delivered tests:

    1. Credit/debit card: Candidates can pay through credit or debit cards branded with the logo of American express, Discover, JCB, Master card or Visa card.
    2. PayPal: Candidate can also pay through this mode if suitable.
    3. E-check service: Candidates have this option to pay as well but the service must be drawn against US banks only.
    4. Money order/ certified check or voucher.
    5. Western union quick pay service: candidates can choose PAY TO while completing their form. And then can pay the fee under Company Name: Educational Testing Service; Company Code: GREPROGRAM NJ; Country: USA in which candidate must include his original Western Union Quick Pay Receipt.

    For GRE Subject test the preferred modes of payment are given below:

    1. Credit/debit card: Candidates can pay through credit or debit cards branded with the logo of American express, Discover, JCB, Master card or Visa card.
    2. PayPal: Candidate can also pay through this mode if suitable.
    3. E-check service: Candidates have this option to pay as well but the service must be drawn against US banks only.
    4. Money order/ certified check or voucher.

    Fee Reduction Programme in GRE

    Keeping in mind that the money must not be a barrier in anyone’s study, ETS employs some a fee reduction programme for GRE subject and general test. As per the fee reduction programmes, the candidates can pay 50% of the total exam fee after meeting certain terms and conditions employed by ETS. The underrepresented groups eligible for fee reduction programmes are:

    For those with the financial need: To be eligible for fee reduction, candidate must meet following requirements:

    • He must be a US citizen.
    • He must have been receiving financial aid through any under graduate college in the United States, American Samoa, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico
    • He must be a dependant with an Institutional Student Information Report which shows his parental contribution less than $2,500 for senior year.
    • He must be self supporting with an ISIR showing contribution less than $3,000 .
    • The students who are un enrolled can also be eligible for fee reduction if:
    • They have applied for financial aid.
    • They have an ISIR indicating a contribution of not more than $3,000

    For those who are unemployed: Candidates who are unemployed and are receiving unemployment compensation can also get the GRE fee reduction certificate.

    For national programmes in the United States: ETS also provides fee reduction certificates in many other programmes like:

    • GEM: National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science Program
    • Gates Millennium Scholars Program
    • PREP: Post baccalaureate Research Education Program
    • Ronald E. McNair Post baccalaureate Achievement Program (The McNair Scholars Program)
    • Project 1000 Program

    Cancel or Change your GRE Registration

    ETS also provides option if any candidate wants to cancel or change jis registration.

    To change GRE General or Subject test registration:

    • Contact GRE services by phone, fax or mail.
    • Mention your name, DOB, address, registration number, test date, preferred test center and new test date.
    • Pay the rescheduling fee.
    • To change the test centre, call GRE Services at 1-609-771-7670 or 1-866-473-4373 by the regular registration deadline.
    • Pay the rescheduling fee.

    To cancel your GRE General or Subject test registration:

    • Contact GRE services by phone, fax or mail
    • Mention your name, date of birth, address, registration number and test date.
    • You will receive the refund equivalent to half of the fee you paid originally.

    GRE Registration for Differently Abled

    ETS provides some exceptions to its candidates who are differently abled. So that they can compete with the folks on an equity basis. Candidates who are differently abled must mention their disability while filling up the GRE form. Some advantages for differently abled are:

    • They are given a 50 percent extended time in tests.
    • In case of any documentation is required, they are given 100 percent extended time.
    • The breaks given to them are not included in the testing time.
    • In GRE general test, they are provided with Ergonomic keyboard, intellikeys keyboard, keyboard with touchpad, Screen magnification, Selectable background and foreground colors, trackball
    • They are also provided with reader or scriber if required
    • They are also provided with assistance for spoken directions too.
    • If they need Braille slate or perkins brailler, they are provided with that too.
    • The differently abled candidates are also provided with alternate test formats if the normal test format is not understandable to them.

    GRE Registration FAQs

    Ques. What is the Refund Policy if one cancels GRE test registration?

    Ans. If the registration is cancelled no later than four days before the test, than automatically  a refund equivalent to half of the test fee will be initiated towards the original payment account. The remainder of the payment shall be retained to cover expenses for processing registration and holding space at the test center:

    • Refunds will be U.S. dollars.
    • Cash refunds are not available.
    • Refund shall not be offered if you fail to follow the proper registration process or if you don’t present required documents at the test center.
    • If the original payment was via check, you need to wait for 8 weeks after your cancellation for your refund to be processed.

    Ques.  What is Monday testing facility?

    Ans. Monday testing is a facility available for those whose religious convictions don’t allow them to take the test on Saturday. Candidates need to mail their registration form, fees and letter- signed be their cleric. This shall confirm your affiliation with a recognized religious body. You shall be asigned the closest available center within 201 kms for locations that are scheduled for Saturday test dates. 

    Ques.  What are the guidelines for rescheduling a test?

    Ans. Rescheduling can be done no later than 4 days before your test date. You can reschedule your test through your ETS account or you can also contact GRE services with your name, DOB, address, registration number, preferred test center and new test date. The faciity of rescheduling a test is available for the same testing year (July 1- June 30) only.

    Ques. After what duration can I retake GRE test?

    Ans. You can retake the test after a gap of 21 days, up to five times within a period of 365 days.

    Ques.  What is the fees for late registration?

    Ans. The fee for late registration is $25, late registration closes one week after the regular registration.

    Ques. Under what circumstances can I apply for a Supplementary Test Center?

    Ans. You can request for a supplementary center if you are more than 201 kms from the nearest center scheduled to give the paper-delivered General Test or Subject Tests. Your request must accompany your completed registration form and fees. You need to include the name and complete address of an institution and staff member willing to administer the test. You should indicate if you would prefer another test date or a refund since centers can’t be guaranteed.  Your request needs to be received by the special registration deadline date at ets.org/gre/general/testdates or ets.org/gre/subject/testdates. 

    Ques. Can I change my test center?

    Ans. If you wish to change your registered test center, you can do so through your ETS account. There will be an additional fee for the same. Test center changes can’t be guaranteed but will be made as space permits.

    Ques. Can I use photocopy of my ID during registration?

    Ans. No, you must use original documents only. Photocopy of your id will not be acceptable.
