As lymph moves into the larger vessels called collecting ducts, lymphatic vessels collect it. It is then filtered at the nodes. These vessels have similar behavior to veins in that they operate at low pressure and feature a set of valves to keep the fluid flowing in one direction.
- Collecting ducts: Lymphatic vessels empty their contents into the right and left lymphatic ducts, (also called the thoracic duct). The subclavian vein, which gives the lymph back to the bloodstream, connects to the ducts. The subclavian vein is located below the collarbone. Giving the lymph back to the bloodstream helps to keep blood pressure and volume balance maintained. It also prevents the extra fluid from collecting around the tissues (called edema).
- Spleen: The spleen is the largest lymphatic organ on the left, just between the ribs and on top of the stomach. The spleen filters and collects the blood and generates white blood cells that fight infection and sickness.
- Thymus: This organ is placed beneath the breastbone in the upper chest. It develops a unique type of white blood cell that defends the body against foreign invaders.
- These lymphoid organs, the tonsils and adenoid, catch the germs from the food we eat and the air we breathe in. They are the first to protect us against foreign intruders in our bodies.
- The soft, spongy tissue in the interior of certain bones, like the hip bone and the breastbone, is called the bone marrow. The bone marrow produces white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.
- Peyer's patches are tiny masses of lymphatic tissue that line your small intestine's mucous membrane. The lymphoid cells help in the monitoring and killing off germs in the intestines.
- Appendix: Your appendix includes lymphoid tissue that can kill bacteria before it enters your intestine during absorption. Many researchers show that the appendix is also involved in storing "good bacteria" and repopulating our gut with them when an infection has gone.
