The Centralised Admission Process (CAP) for Direct Second Year Engineering (DSE), commonly known as BTech/BE Lateral Entry, is conducted by the State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell, Maharashtra, for admission of diploma holders and eligible BSc graduates directly into the second year of BE/BTech programmes at government, government-aided, university-managed, and private unaided engineering colleges across the state. Unlike the first-year CAP, admission under this scheme is based on merit derived from qualifying diploma or degree marks rather than an entrance exam, and candidates are required to select either e-scrutiny or physical scrutiny for document verification during registration. MAH CAP Counselling 2026: Overview

The State Common Entrance Test Cell, Maharashtra conducts MAH CAP counselling for students seeking admission to First Year Undergraduate Technical Courses in Engineering and Technology, Integrated Master of Engineering and Technology, and Pharmacy programmes for the academic year 2026-27. You are eligible to participate if you hold a valid MHT CET 2026 score, a JEE Main 2026 score, or in some cases a qualifying Class 12 percentage where accepted.

MAH CAP is conducted entirely online and covers registration, document verification, provisional and final merit list generation, choice filling, seat allotment across multiple rounds, and reporting to the allotted institute. The process is separate from the MHT CET exam itself - your exam score only earns you a merit rank, while the seat is secured through this counselling process.

Admission under MAH CAP happens through different candidature types. Maharashtra State students apply under Type A, B, C, D or E depending on their domicile and schooling history, while students from outside the state register under the All India or OMS category. MAH CAP Counselling Eligibility 2026

You need to meet the eligibility conditions below before registering for MAH CAP 2026. Eligibility differs slightly depending on whether you are applying through MHT CET, JEE Main, or as a diploma holder for lateral entry.

Note: You should register for CAP even if your MHT CET score is low , since every student with a non-zero score is assigned a merit number and can participate in choice filling.

MAH CAP Counselling Registration 2026

Follow these steps to complete your MAH CAP 2026 registration on the official CET Cell portal:

1. Visit cetcell.mahacet.org and open the relevant Course Admission Portal for B.E./B.Tech or Pharmacy.
2. Click on "New Registration" and log in using your MHT CET or JEE Main application number and roll number.
3. Fill in your academic details, communication address, and reservation category information.
4. Select your candidature type - Maharashtra State (Type A/B/C/D/E), All India, or OMS.

Once your final merit list rank is out, you need to fill your college and course preferences carefully, since your choices directly decide which seat you can be allotted in each round.

• Fill at least 15-20 choices to maximise your chances across all rounds , arranging them from your most preferred college and branch down to your safer options.
• List choices in the order you actually want them - the system allots the highest-ranked choice available to you based on your merit number, not the order you filled them for convenience.
• Include a realistic mix of ambitious, moderate and safe options rather than filling only top-ranked colleges, since choices with very high cutoffs may not open for your merit rank.
• Check the previous year cutoff trend for each college and branch before finalising your list, so your choices are aligned with your expected rank range.
• Lock your choices only after reviewing them carefully, since choices cannot be edited after the option form deadline for that round.
• Keep your candidature type and category selection in mind, since seat availability and cutoffs vary significantly by category within the same college.

MAH CAP Round-Wise Seat Allotment

MAH CAP 2026 seat allotment is conducted across four CAP rounds, with an additional institute-level round for any seats that remain vacant after the centralised process ends.

You can upgrade your seat in later rounds without losing your current allotment , as long as you have not already frozen your choice or reported to the college.

MAH CAP Reporting to Allotted College

Once you accept a seat in any CAP round, you need to complete reporting formalities within the deadline announced for that round:

1. Download your seat allotment letter from the CAP portal after logging in with your registered credentials.
2. Pay the seat acceptance fee online or through the mode specified for your allotted institute.
3. Report to the allotted college in person, or complete online reporting if the institute allows it.
4. Submit your original documents for verification at the college, along with the required photocopies.
5. Collect your admission confirmation slip from the institute once verification is complete.

Upgrade vs Freeze vs Withdraw: What to Choose

Every CAP round gives you three choices once a seat is allotted, and picking the right one depends on how satisfied you are with the allotted college and branch.

• Freeze - choose this if you are happy with your current allotment and do not want to risk it in later rounds. Your seat is locked and you proceed directly to reporting.
• Upgrade - choose this if you want a chance at a better college or branch in the next round while still keeping your current seat as a backup. You continue participating in subsequent rounds automatically.
• Withdraw - choose this only if you no longer wish to pursue admission through MAH CAP this year. If you withdraw after accepting a seat, the seat acceptance fee is not fully refunded , and a portion is deducted as a cancellation penalty.

If you are unsure, upgrading is generally safer than withdrawing, since it keeps your current seat intact while still giving you a chance at a better option in the next round.
