What are Integers?

Integers are all the numbers in Mathematics, excluding fractions. Integers include numbers with both the signs, negative and positive and zero. The fractions are not included in the integers. Integers can undergo all the arithmetic operations.
For example: 1, -17, 0, etc.
All the integers can be represented on a number line. The numbers on the right of 0 are positive, and the numbers on the left of 0 are negative.

Operations of integers include all the arithmetic equations that can be carried out for integers. There are four types of operations which can be carried out with integers. The four different arithmetic operations are as follows.
Addition
The operation addition includes adding the two integers. Addition can be applied to both positive and negative integers. Scenarios with positive and negative integers are as follows:
- Both are positive integers: This causes the addition of both the integers and then a greater integer is obtained. For example, 2+5=7, 7 is greater than 2 and 5.
- Both are negative integers: This causes the addition of both the integers and then a smaller integer is obtained. For example, -2 + (-5) = -7, -7 is smaller than -2 and -5.
- One is positive, and another is a negative integer: This scenario does not result in addition. This results in subtraction which is explained below.
Subtraction
The operation subtraction includes adding the two integers. Subtraction can be applied to both positive and negative integers. Scenarios with positive and negative integers are as follows:
- Both integers have the same sign: This causes subtraction of the smaller integer from the larger integers.
- Positive integers: For example, (+5) - (+2) = 5-2 = 3.
- Negative integers: For example, (-5) - (-2)= -5+2 = -3.
- Both integers have different signs: This can result in addition or subtraction. It depends on the nature of signs present.
- For example : (+5) - (-2)=5+2 = 7.
- -2 - (+5)= -2-5=-7

Multiplication
Multiplication results in the formation of larger, or smaller integers from the integers involved.
- Both integers have the same sign: When both integers have the same sign, it always results in a positive sign.
Positive integers: For example, (+5) X (+2)= 10.
Negative integers: For example, (-5) X (-14)= 70.
- Both integers have different signs: When both integers have different signs, it always results in a negative sign. For example : (+5) X (-2)= -10.
Division
Division results in the formation of smaller integers from the integers involved. The result can also be a fraction.
- Both integers have the same sign: When both integers have the same sign, it always results in a positive sign.
Positive integers: For example, (+14) \(\div \) (+2)= 7
Negative integers: For example, (-2) \(\div \) (-14)= 1/7
- Both integers have different signs: When both integers have different signs, it always results in a negative sign. For example : (+15) \(\div \) (-3)= -5.

Ans: To determine the total, we have to add all the numbers, hence, 25+(-7) + (-14) + 15, +10 = 25 +15+10+ (-21)
= 45 - 21 = 24
Ques 2: In Delhi the temperature was – 7°C on Monday and then it increased by 2°C on Tuesday. What was the temperature of Delhi on Tuesday? (2 marks)
Ans: Increased means addition.
Thus,
-7+2 = -5
Thus, the temperature in Delhi is -5°C.
Ques 3: A jet is flying at the height of 7000 m above the sea level. At a particular point, it is exactly above a submarine floating 1800 m below sea level. What is the vertical distance between them? (2 marks)
Ans: Distance between the jet and sea = 7000m
Distance between sea and submarine = 1800 m
Distance between both = 7000 + 1800 = 8800m
Vertical distance between the jet and submarine is 8800m.
Ques 4: If Jack’s scores in five successive rounds are 15, – 7, – 18, 18 and 10, what was his total at the end? (2 marks)
Ans: To determine the total, we have to add all the numbers, hence, 15+(-7) + (-18) + 18 +10
= 15 +18+10+ (-25)
= 43 - 25 = 18
Ques 5: In Delhi the temperature was – 6°C on Monday and then it increased by 2°C on Tuesday. What was the temperature of Delhi on Tuesday? (2 marks)
Ans: Increased means addition. Thus,
-6+2 = -4
Thus, the temperature in Delhi is -4°C.
Ques 6: A jet is flying at the height of 7180 m above the sea level. At a particular point, it is exactly above a submarine floating 1870 m below sea level. What is the vertical distance between them? (2 marks)
Ans: Distance between the jet and sea = 7180m
Distance between sea and submarine = 1870 m
Distance between both = 7180 + 1870 = 9050m
Vertical distance between the jet and submarine is 9050m.
Ques 7: If Jack’s scores in five successive rounds are 27, – 6, – 14, 18 and 10, what was his total at the end? (2 marks)
Ans: To determine the total, we have to add all the numbers, hence, 27+(-6) + (-14) + 18 +10
= 27 +18+10+ (-20)
= 55 - 20 = 35
Ques 8: In Delhi the temperature was – 4°C on Monday and then it decreased by 1°C on Tuesday. What was the temperature of Delhi on Tuesday? (2 marks)
Answer: Increased means addition. Thus,
-4-1 = -5
Thus, the temperature in Delhi is -5°C.
Ques 9: A jet is flying at the height of 8000 m above the sea level. At a particular point, it is exactly above a submarine floating 1700 m below sea level. What is the vertical distance between them? (2 marks)
Ans: Distance between the jet and sea = 8000m
Distance between sea and submarine = 1700 m
Distance between both = 8000 + 1700 = 9700m
Vertical distance between the jet and submarine is 9700m.
Ques 10: If Jack’s scores in five successive rounds are 25, – 7, – 17, 19 and 7, what was his total at the end? (2 marks)
Answer: To determine the total, we have to add all the numbers, hence, 25+(-7) + (-17) + 19 +7
= 25 +19+7+ (-24)
= 51 - 24 = 27
