Descending order is an arrangement in which numbers are arranged from largest to smallest. In simple words, descending order means to arrange numbers from largest to smallest. We can arrange natural numbers, whole numbers, fractions, integers and even English alphabets in descending order. Descending order plays an important role to compare two or more numbers.

When we arrange numbers in descending order, we use “>” (greater than) symbol. Starting from the largest number we keep adding this symbol with an open end to the largest number.
Let's consider an example for understanding.
Arrange 3, 9, 22, 5, 17, and in descending order.
In Descending order, we arrange the numbers as follows: 22 > 17 > 9 > 5 > 3.
Even “,” (comma) can be written in the arrangement instead of “>”. Therefore, we can also represent the arrangement as, 22, 17, 9, 5, 3.

Descending Order in Alphabets

Just like numbers, we can also arrange English alphabets in descending order. In descending order, we arrange numbers from highest to lowest values. In that sense, for the Alphabet, the descending order will be arranged from Z to A.
Note: It is advised to use “,” instead of “>” (greater than) symbol in the case of Alphabets Descending order.
Thus, if we write descending order of Alphabets will be written as: Z, Y, X, W, V, U, T, S, R, Q, P, O, N, M, L, K, J, I, H, G, F, E, D, C, B, A.

Descending Order of Fractions

Before arranging fractions in descending order, we must know the concept of comparison on fractions. In fractionals descending order, there are three cases. We will take examples to understand each case.
Case 1: Common Numerator and Different Denominator
In this case, the fraction with the lowest denominator is the largest number. So, compare the denominator of each fraction and arrange them from smallest to largest denominator.
For example, arrange 1/3, 1/5, and 1/2 in descending order.
In descending order: 1/2 > 1/3 > 1/5.
Common Denominator and Different Numerator
In this case, the fraction number with the greater numerator is the largest. So, compare numerators of each fraction and arrange them from the largest to the smallest numerator.
For example, arrange 2/3, 1/3, 5/3 in descending order.
In descending order: 5/3> 2/3 > 1/3.
Unlike Fractions
Those fractions that do not follow any of the above two qualities are called, unlike fractions. To arrange these fractions in descending order first, convert them to like fractions. After converting compare the numerators. The fraction with the greater numerator is the largest. Arrange them according to the numerator values.
Things to Remember
- In descending order, the first number is always greater than every number.
- All numbers should be arranged from the highest to the smallest value.
- Numbers are separated by “>”. The open head must be phasing the highest number. We can also use “,” (comma) instead.
- In descending order, the last number must be the smallest number among all numbers.
- For fraction numbers, compare the numerator and denominator accordingly then arrange the fractions.

Ques 1: Arrange the following numbers in descending order: 35, 7, 46, 12, 22, 66, 49. (2 marks)
Ans: To write in descending order, pick the largest and smallest numbers first.
Largest number: 66
Smallest number: 7
Arrange the numbers from the highest value to the lowest. Thus, in descending order the numbers can be arranged as 66, 49, 46, 35, 22, 12, 7
Ques 2: Rearrange the following numbers in descending order: 3/4, 9/4, 11/4, 7/4, 17/4. (2 marks)
Ans: This is a case of a common denominator. In this case, only compare the numerator. The fraction with the largest numerator value is the greater fraction.
The increasing value of the numerator is 17, 11, 9, 7, 3.
Therefore, the descending order will be 17/4, 11/4, 9/4, 7/4, 3/4.
Ques 3: Arrange 42, 33, 28, 92, 52 in descending order. (2 marks)
Ans: Simplify each term and convert them to the a whole numbers
We have,
44 = 4x4x4x4 = 256
33= 3x3x3 = 27
24= 2x2x2x2 = 16
92= 9x9 = 81
53= 5x5x5 = 125
Now arrange them from highest to smallest number we have,
256, 125, 81, 27, 16
Ques 4: Arrange the following numbers in descending order: 1974, 43521, 89741, 33547, 2344. (2 marks)
Ans: We can say that 89741 is the largest number and 1974 is the smallest number. So in decreasing order, 89741 will be placed at first.
The descending order will be: 89741> 43521> 33547> 2344> 1974
Ques 5: A boy kept his total of 30 pens into 5 different boxes. He kept 6 pens in box 1, 12 pens in box 2, 3 pens in box 3, 5 pens in box 4, and 4 pens in box 5. Help him to arrange these boxes based on decreasing numbers of pens. (2 marks)
Ans: Write separately the numbers of pens that each box has
Box 1: 6 pens
Box 2: 12 pens
Box 3: 3 pens
Box 4: 5 pens
Box 5: 4 pens
We can say that Box 2 has a maximum and Box 3 has a minimum number of pens. So, Box 2 will be written at first and Box 3 at last. The boy can arrange boxes in the order following:
Box 2 > Box 1 > Box 4 > Box 5 > Box 3.
Ques 6: In a class 6th results, 5 boys named Aman, Shyam, Raj, Anuj, and Sunil scored 71.2%, 68.9%, 92.6%, 88.7%, 93.8% respectively. Based on their percentage arrange them with decreasing percentage? Also, name who has scored the highest and lowest percentage? (2 marks)
Ans: As per the given information we can say that Sunil has scored the highest percentage while Shyam has scored the least percentage.
So for ranking, Sunil will be ranked as 1st and Shyam will be ranked 5th (last).
The percentage-wise arrangement will be: Sunil> Raj> Anuj> Aman> Shyam
Ques 7: In the school assembly, students are arranged according to their height. The shortest will stand at first and then so on. Arrange the assembly line and write the order from tallest to shortest. Pankaj is 120 cm long, Raju is 114 cm long, Akash is 122 cm long, Rohan is 132 cm long, and Roshni is 119 cm long. (2 marks)
Ans: First of all write the height of each student separately as:
Pankaj: 120 cm long
Raju: 114 cm long
Akash: 122 cm long
Rohan: 132 cm long
Roshni: 119 cm long
According to the data, Rohan is the tallest and Raju is the shortest among all students. Therefore, Rohan will stand at the last and Raju will stand at the beginning of the assembly line.
The order will be: Rohan> Akash> Pankaj> Roshni> Raju
Ques 8: In a 100 m long race 5 players participated. Player 1 completed the race in 17.3 sec, Player 2 in 15.9 sec, Player 3 in 18.7 sec, Player 4 in 17.2 sec, and Player 5 in 19.9 sec. Calculate the velocities of each player and arrange their velocities in decreasing order? (2 marks)
Ans: Velocity = Distance/Time (m/sec)
Velocity of Player 1: 100/17.3 = 5.78
Velocity of Player 2: 100/15.9 = 6.28
Velocity of Player 3: 100/18.7 = 5.34
Velocity of Player 4: 100/17.2 = 5.81
Velocity of Player 5: 100/19.9 = 5.02
We can say that Player 2 has the highest while Player 5 has the smallest velocity. Now arranging the players according to their velocities:
Player 2> Player 4> Player 1> Player 3> Player 5
