Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 5 States of Matter – Important Topics
Anything that takes up space is called matter. Commonly, there are three states of matter such as Solid, Liquid and Gas. Other states of matter include plasma and Bose- Einstein condensate.
Properties of Solids:
- Solids have their constituent particles tightly packed together.
- They have a fixed geometric shape.
- They have very little compressibility and thermal expansion.
- They have a sharp melting point, after which, solid either turn into liquids or gas.
Properties of Liquids:
- Liquids have their constituent particles loosely packed.
- They do not have any fixed geometric shape but they take the shape of the container in which they are kept.
- They have more compressibility and thermal expansion when compared to solids.
- On heating, liquids turn into gases.
Properties of Gases:
- Gases have their constituent particles very loosely packed.
- They do not have any fixed geometric shape.
- They have the most compressibility and thermal expansion of all.
- On condensation process, gases either turn into solids or liquids.
