Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 7 Equilibrium – Important Topics

At equalibrium, the rate of forward reaction is equal to backwards reaction. Equilibrium can be classified into two types- Homogeneous Equilibrium and Heterogeneous Equilibrium.

  • Homogeneous Equilibirum: Homogeneous Equilibrium is where the number of molecules in the reactant and product are the same and both are in same phases.
  • Heterogeneous Equilibrium: Heterogeneous Equilibrium is where the number of molecules in the reactant and product are the same but both are in different phases.

Law of mass action states that the rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the concentration of the reactants.

By law of mass action,

rc = k[A]a[B]b

The equilibrium constant in a reaction can be calculated using the following formula:

KC =[ Y]Y[Z]Z / [W]W[X]X 

Relation between Kp and Kc is given by,

Kp = K(RT) Δn

Le chatelier's principle states that adding extra reactant to the product formation will move the equilibrium to one side. The equilibrium will move forward when the reactant's concentration is increased. The equilibrium of the reaction moves towards the usage of the reactants in the reaction which leads to a fall in the concentration of the reactants.
