Exercise 6.4 introduces students to an equilateral and isosceles triangle. When each of the sides of a triangle is of the same length, it is an equilateral triangle. Similarly, if any two sides of a triangle are of the same length, it is said to be an isosceles triangle. In exercise 6.4, students are also familiarised with two important properties related to the sum of the lengths of two sides of a triangle. It can be summarised as:
- The sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle is always greater than the length of the third side.
- The difference between the lengths of any two sides is always smaller than the length of the third side.

Example From Class 7 Chapter 6 The Triangle and its Properties
| Ques. Identify the types of triangles based on the sides:
Ans. (i) In the figure, PQ = 5 cm, PR = 6 cm, and QR = 7 cm We see that the sides, PQ ≠ PR ≠ QR Therefore, ΔQPR is not a scalene triangle. (ii)In the figure, AB = 4 cm, AC = 4 cm Thus the two sides, AB = AC Therefore, ΔABC is an isosceles triangle. (iii)In the figure, MN = 3 cm, ML = 3 cm and NL = 3 cm All sides of the triangle are equal in length. MN = ML = NL Therefore, ΔMNL is an equilateral triangle. |
