Examples From Chapter 2 Linear Equations in One Variable

Ex. 1 Determine the length of the stick if 1/6 of the length of a stick is 5cm.

Soln: If the length of the stick is l cm.
So, (1/6)l=5cm
l=5×6
∴ l = 30 cm.

The stick’s length is 30 cm.

Ex. 2 The numerator of a fraction is 2 less than the denominator. If 1 is added to its denominator, it becomes 1/2. Find fraction.

Soln:  If the denominator of the fractionis x then,

numerator = x - 2
Therefore, the fraction becomes =(x−2)/x
when 1 is added to the denominator, the fraction becomes 1/2
So, \(\frac{(x-2)}{(x+1)}=\frac{1}{2}\)
By cross multiplication, we get
2(x - 2) = x + 1
2x - 4 = x + 1
2x - x = 1 + 4
∴ x = 5
So, the fraction is (x−2)/x=(5−2)/5
= 3/5
