Examples From Chapter 6 Squares and Square Roots

Ex. 1 Find the least number that should be added to 252 to get a perfect square. Find the square root of the perfect square thus obtained.

Soln: Here we see, 152 < 252

Here we see, 152 < 252

Therefore, the next perfect square is 162 = 256

Hence, the number to be added is 162 – 252 = 256 – 252 = 4

Hence, the perfect square so obtained is 252 + 4 = 256

Hence, 

√256 = 16.

Ex. 2 Solve: (n+1)- n2 = ?

Soln:

(n+1)2 – n2

= (n+ 2n + 1) – n2

= 2n + 1
