Scandium was discovered by Lars Fredrik Nilson, a Swedish chemist, in the year 1879. He was trying to make pure ytterbia from 10 kilograms of the mineral euxenite ((Y, Ca, Ce, U, Th)(Nb, Ta, Ti)2O6). Scandium is generally found in the minerals such as thortveitite ((Sc, Y)2Si2O7), bazzite (Be3(Sc, Al)2Si6O18), and wiimote. However, the most common method of obtaining Scandium is as a byproduct of uranium refinement. Scandium is a soft, light metal that could be useful in aerospace applications.
