GRE with dMAT is the reality for a large share of Indian students applying to Germany’s technical universities from the Summer 2027 intake. Taking the Digital Master Test (dMAT) does not exempt anyone from the GRE, because dMAT sits inside APS verification while GRE is a program-level admission input at TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, and a few competitive research universities.

  • Two exams, two purposes: dMAT lives inside APS documentation for engineering, commerce, business, finance, and management bachelor’s holders; GRE is a program-level admission input a handful of German universities still ask for.
  • TUM is the biggest overlap: Indian applicants for competitive MSc programs at TU Munich still need both the GRE and the dMAT if their bachelor’s field is on the APS list.
  • A weak dMAT does not sink APS: Universities decide independently how much weight it carries, so treat it as a supplementary signal, not a rejection trigger.
  • IIT graduates catch a break: TUM’s Computation, Information and Technology school accepts IIT transcripts in place of GRE or GATE, cutting one exam off the list.

Student discussions on Reddit’s Germany MS threads through mid 2026 show a common assumption that dMAT would replace the GRE for TUM and RWTH applicants. That assumption is why several Indian applicants are now booking GRE dates late in the Summer 2027 cycle. Getting the exam stack right the first time saves three to six months of GRE prep, one €150 dMAT slot and a possible resubmission through uni-assist.

What GRE With dMAT Actually Means

GRE with dMAT means running two parallel tracks: one aptitude test that clears APS verification and another that clears program-level admission cutoffs. The dMAT is a computer-based aptitude test introduced by APS India and g.a.s.t. in June 2026 for Indian bachelor’s holders in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or Management targeting the Summer 2027 intake or later. The GRE, in contrast, is a global admissions test ETS delivers year-round and universities set their own cutoffs on.

The dMAT scorecard is now a mandatory document inside APS verification for the eligible field groups. That certificate then travels with the rest of the APS package to any German university the student applies to. The GRE is submitted separately, program by program, through the university’s own portal or via uni-assist.

The two tests do not overlap in scope. dMAT reports on the Digital Master Test aptitude scorecard using a 0 to 200 score plus a percentile rank. GRE reports Verbal (130 to 170), Quantitative (130 to 170) and Analytical Writing (0 to 6). Different scales, different reviewers, different weight in the admissions file.

  • What dMAT gives you: An APS-attached aptitude score that a German university may weigh alongside your degree and transcripts.
  • What dMAT does not cover: University-specific admission cutoffs. TUM Informatics still asks for GRE Q164 whether or not you sat the dMAT.
  • What GRE gives you: A program-specific score that hits published cutoffs at technical universities and Management and Technology at TUM.
  • What GRE does not cover: Anything inside APS. Your APS certificate cannot be issued without the dMAT scorecard if your field is eligible.

Note: Treat dMAT as an APS document and GRE as an admissions document. They live in different folders of the same application and cannot substitute for each other.

Who Needs Both GRE and dMAT

Only Indian applicants whose bachelor’s degree is in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or Management need the dMAT, and among that group, only those applying to GRE-mandatory programs need the GRE too. That intersection is smaller than most Reddit threads make it sound.

APS India and g.a.s.t. confirmed in June 2026 that the dMAT rule applies to Master’s applicants starting Summer 2027 intake. PhD candidates, exchange students, double-degree students and anyone applying to a Bachelor’s programme are exempt. Anyone who started APS registration before 29 June 2026 or already holds an APS certificate is also exempt

For the GRE, the situation is program-driven, not policy-driven. If you target a GRE-required MSc at TUM (Informatics, Data Engineering, Mechanical Engineering among others), an MEng at RWTH Aachen’s competitive tracks, or Management and Technology at TUM, the GRE stays mandatory. If you target a public research university outside this list, the GRE is often optional or not asked for.

The four applicant buckets

  • Both GRE and dMAT: Indian engineer or business graduate targeting TUM Informatics, Data Engineering, Mechanical or Management and Technology for Summer 2027 or later.
  • dMAT only: Same field group but applying to a mid-tier public university (Stuttgart, Darmstadt, Chemnitz, Fulda) that does not ask for GRE.
  • GRE only: Applicants whose bachelor’s is outside the six APS-listed fields (physics, chemistry, biology, humanities, arts, medicine) but who target a GRE-mandatory program.
  • Neither: IIT graduates applying to TUM CIT programs that accept IIT transcripts in place of GRE or GATE, if their field is also outside the dMAT list.
Important: If your bachelor’s field is not on the APS-eligible list, taking the dMAT anyway does not strengthen your APS file. Official guidance from g.a.s.t. is unambiguous on this.

German Universities Asking GRE Beyond dMAT

Five universities publish GRE cutoffs that dMAT does not offset: TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Heidelberg University and Humboldt University Berlin. TU Munich runs the strictest cutoffs among them, with published minimums that Indian applicants cannot substitute with any other score.

RWTH Aachen keeps GRE optional across most programs, but Computer Science and Data Science admissions committees consider strong scores. Target ranges reported by Indian applicants: Quantitative 160+, Verbal 148+, AWA 3.0+. For a full view of programs, see GRE-accepting universities in Germany.

University GRE Status Target Quant / AWA
TU Munich (Informatics, DEA, Mech) Mandatory for Indians Quant 164 / AWA 4.0
TU Munich (Materials Science) Mandatory for Indians Quant 157 / AWA 3.0
RWTH Aachen (CS, Data Science) Recommended Quant 160+ / AWA 3.0+
LMU Munich (Natural Sciences) Case-by-case Quant 159+
Heidelberg University Not mandated, valued Total 315+
Humboldt University Berlin Selective programs Program-specific

The dMAT scorecard sits alongside these cutoffs but does not replace them. A university reviewing a TUM Informatics file for a Summer 2027 applicant will see both the GRE report and the dMAT certificate; only the GRE clears the published minimum. Applicants targeting MS Computer Science programs in Germany should verify each program’s current stance before finalising the exam stack.

Note: If TUM is on the shortlist and the bachelor’s field is on the APS list, plan for both exams from day one. Reordering the prep midway costs the intake.

How dMAT and GRE Actually Differ

The dMAT tests three narrow aptitude formats under time pressure; the GRE tests broad reasoning across verbal, quantitative and analytical writing. The formats have no overlapping question types, so prep hours for one do not carry over to the other.

dMAT’s Core Module runs 90 minutes and contains three subtests: Figure Sequences (20 matrix-series tasks in 25 minutes), Mathematical Equations (20 systems of equations in 25 minutes, unknowns are integers 1 to 20) and Latin Squares (16 tasks in 20 minutes, complete a 5x5 grid where letters A to E appear once per row and column). The Subject Module runs another 90 minutes with field-specific application tasks. Total sitting: 3 hours 30 minutes with a break.

The GRE exam pattern runs 1 hour 58 minutes. Verbal Reasoning has 40 questions in 60 minutes, Quantitative Reasoning has 40 questions in 70 minutes and Analytical Writing is a single 30-minute essay task. Verbal is where Indian test takers historically lose points, and that section has no dMAT equivalent.

Scoring scales and validity

  • dMAT score: 0 to 200 scaled plus percentile rank. Certificate has no listed expiry.
  • GRE score: Verbal 130 to 170, Quant 130 to 170, AWA 0 to 6. Valid for five years.
  • dMAT attempts: Limited retakes per cycle, results in about two weeks.
  • GRE attempts: Up to five in 12 months, minimum 21 days between attempts.
Key Note: The unique challenge in dMAT is Figure Sequences and Latin Squares. Neither appears on the GRE, so mock-testing off GRE material for dMAT prep is a wasted effort.

Costs and Timeline for Both Tests

Running both exams costs roughly INR 40,000 in test fees alone, and requires a nine-month planning window to hit a Winter 2027 or Summer 2027 intake without missing an APS or uni-assist deadline. The dMAT deadline is the hard constraint because it sits inside APS verification.

The GRE General Test in India costs INR 23,452 including taxes (Source: ETS India, 2026). Slots run at 15 to 20 dates per month at test centres and near-daily for GRE at Home.

Cost Item Amount When Due
dMAT test fee €150 (INR 16,384) At registration, by 15 September 2026
APS certificate fee INR 18,000 At APS submission
GRE General Test fee INR 23,452 At GRE booking
GRE score reporting (extra beyond four free) INR 2,500 approx per report After test
Uni-assist per-application fee €75 first, €30 additional At university application

Conversions based on a EUR-INR rate of INR 109.23 and a USD-INR rate of INR 95.81 as of July 14, 2026. Rates fluctuate; check the current rate before financial planning.

Timeline discipline matters more than budget. If the target is Summer 2027 intake, the dMAT must be sat by the 26 September 2026 window and the GRE by early November 2026 to leave two weeks for score reporting before uni-assist deadlines. Missing that stack pushes the applicant to Winter 2027/28.

When You Can Skip the GRE

Three groups can legitimately drop the GRE from their prep list even while sitting the dMAT: IIT graduates applying to TUM CIT, applicants targeting non-GRE public universities and anyone applying only to programs where the GRE is optional and the profile is already strong. Every other group should assume the GRE stays mandatory.

TUM’s Computation, Information and Technology school confirms that graduates of the Indian Institutes of Technology can upload their IIT transcript in place of GRE or GATE for the Informatics, Data Engineering and Mechanical Engineering tracks. That single exemption saves three to six months of prep for a small but growing IIT cohort. Applicants from BITS Pilani, NITs and IIITs do not get this exemption and still submit GRE.

Mid-tier public technical universities, including Stuttgart, Darmstadt, Chemnitz, Augsburg, Fulda and Heilbronn, do not publish GRE cutoffs. If the shortlist is built entirely from these universities, the GRE has no admission-file value. For a wider look at options, see top MS universities in Germany and the full list of Master engineering universities.

If X university lists GRE as optional and Y applicant has an 8.5+ CGPA from a Tier-1 Indian institute plus one published paper, then Z is a defensible skip. That means the file already carries the signal the GRE would provide. Under any weaker profile, an optional GRE is worth submitting.

Universities Currently Using dMAT in Admissions

Only two German universities currently use the dMAT as a formal selection criterion in their own admissions review, though its presence in APS gives every university line-of-sight to the score. The dMAT is younger than the GRE inside German admissions and its weight will shift over the next two cycles.

Because the dMAT scorecard rides with the APS package, any German university receiving an APS-verified file from an eligible Indian applicant sees the dMAT score automatically. Whether that score changes an admission decision depends on each university’s internal policy. A weak dMAT does not trigger an APS rejection; APS verifies document authenticity, not test performance.

Applicants planning around German university application deadlines for 2027 should plan on the assumption that more universities will formalise dMAT weighting between now and Winter 2027/28. That does not change the GRE requirement for programs that already publish cutoffs.

Also Check:

The Summer 2027 intake is the first cycle where dMAT is live inside APS, which makes it the most confused cycle for Indian applicants trying to plan around it. The clean answer is that GRE with dMAT is not a redundant duplication; it is a two-track requirement created by two independent bodies with two different purposes. Applicants who plan for both from the start avoid the mid-cycle rebooking that is showing up on student forums. Those who confirm each university’s requirement early and drop the GRE only when clearly optional save one exam without risking an intake.

FAQs

Ques. Does dMAT replace the GRE for MS in Germany?

Ans. No. The dMAT sits inside APS verification while the GRE is a program-level admissions test. Universities that publish GRE cutoffs, including TU Munich Informatics with a Quant 164 minimum for Indian applicants, still require the GRE even if the dMAT is on file.

Ques. Do all Indian students need to take the dMAT from Summer 2027?

Ans. No. Only Indian Master’s applicants whose bachelor’s is in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or Management need the dMAT. PhD applicants, exchange students, double-degree students and Bachelor’s applicants are exempt.

Ques. How much does GRE with dMAT cost in total?

Ans. Approximately INR 40,000 in test fees. The dMAT fee is €150 (around INR 16,384) and the GRE General Test costs INR 23,452 including taxes in India. APS certification adds another INR 18,000. Uni-assist processing runs €75 for the first application and €30 per additional application.

Ques. What is the dMAT registration deadline for Summer 2027 intake?

Ans. 15 September 2026 is the registration cutoff for the first Indian dMAT test window. The test itself is scheduled for 26 September 2026, and first results release on 12 October 2026. Missing this window pushes the applicant to the next available cycle and risks the Summer 2027 intake.

Ques. Do IIT graduates need the GRE for TUM?

Ans. No, for specific CIT school programs. TUM’s Computation, Information and Technology school confirms that IIT graduates can upload their transcript in place of GRE or GATE for MSc Informatics, Data Engineering and Analytics and Mechanical Engineering. BITS Pilani, NIT and IIIT graduates do not receive this exemption.
