AICTE: Institutes to Take a Call on Equivalence of Nomenclature for Engineering and Tech Degrees

November 19, 2020: All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has directed engineering and technology institutes to decide upon the equivalence of nomenclatures for higher education and recruitment purposes.

As per the announcement made by AICTE, the council will not provide equivalence of nomenclatures used for higher education and recruitment process for engineering and technical branch candidates. 

Referring to the statement, AICTE Member Secretary Rajive Kumar stated that the nomenclatures used in institutes for recruitment have been approved by AICTE. Although, AICTE was unable to upload and update the nomenclatures for IITs, and NITs universities. 

He further added, universities like IITs and NITs have the authority to approve and begin the course without seeking approval from AICTE. As a result, it gives the universities the authority to change and update the nomenclature list without the involvement of AICTE. 

"Making an exhaustive list of nomenclatures to give further clarity is not practical for AICTE nor it is necessary," he added.

Earlier, In 2017, the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) published a notification for the nomenclatures used in major and core engineering and technical branches, and their appropriate use in the higher recruitment process. 

AICTE said in a statement, “In spite of this, the council receives a large number of grievances from faculty members and requests from governments, Directorates of Technical Education (DTEs) pertaining to eligibility for faculty positions in the AICTE approved institutions". 

The council further added, "AICTE will not be providing equivalence to the qualifications obtained from the council approved institution and departments at any level for higher education purpose as well as for employment purpose"

The post suitability for eligible and interested candidates for employment purposes will be decided by the institution for higher studies, the statement further read. 

In August 2020, AICTE released a notification stating that queries of applicants regarding the relevance of nomenclatures used for the selection engineering and technical branch recruitment process need to be resolved at the state level.
