After the Centre orders reopening of schools, the government of Assam aims to re-create the ancient gurukul system and teach students of classes 5 to 8 in the open space to reduce the chances of contagion.
Students who study in classes 9 to 12 will attend classes for a maximum of three hours, with classrooms housing not more than 15 students. For students in classes 9 and 11, classes will be held twice a week while for those in classes 10 and 12, classes will be held four days a week.

The state government has prepared a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) which will be put into effect if the central government allows the state to reopen schools on 1 September. Adhering to the SOP will be voluntary and by no means compulsory.
The focus will be on rural areas. Urban areas lack open spaces but have the benefit of access to online learning.
Initial planning will include compulsory coronavirus testing for all teaching and non-teaching staff. No classes will be held for students of classes 4 and below.
Among students who are pursuing three-year degree courses will, only those in their final semester will have to attend classes, provided they are resumed in September.
The state government is not issuing any directives to universities. Instead, it is relying on them to make a decision after consulting the education department.
The Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) have been asked to consider reducing the syllabus or provide maximum options in the question papers to reduce the burden on students.
