Chandigarh is planning to upgrade the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH - 16) to Medical college and the Union Territory Administration will approach the central government to speed up the process.

In January 2020, the Administration announced that they were planning to set up a Medical college at GMSH.

They had already prepared a proposal and sent it to the Central Government and the Medical Council of India.

In the war room meeting held on October 8, 2020, VP Singh Badnore, the UT Administrator said that the proposal that was sent earlier, regarding the city’s second medical college needed to be expedited.

UT Advisor Manoj Parida added that he would take up the matter with the Medical Council of India as early as possible.

The process was delayed because of the Ongoing COVID 19 pandemic.

They are planning to set up two branches in the proposed Medical College, one at GMSH section 16 and the other at Sarangpur.

At Sarangpur, the exact site for the construction of the campus is not yet determined.

The health department of the Union Territory has requested around 15 acres of land for the Medical College building.

After upgradation, GMSH - 16 will be facilitated with 50 seats for admission to MBBS program. Once the project is ongoing, 50 more seats will be added up as well.

As the administration has given away the land for this ambitious project, the overall cost has been reduced.

The current budget is only restricted to planning, construction and development purposes.

The medicine and health facilities available at GMSH will be utilized for the medical college and the additional infrastructure required in the existing compound will be developed in the spare land.

The rest of the infrastructure including office spaces that are required to run a college will be added to the Sarangpur campus.
