October 29, 2020: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in collaboration with a Mumbai-based startup has developed budget-friendly air quality monitoring sensors to provide pollution data and details to local residents.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur developed air quality monitoring sensor is designed to provide pollution data to residents. The sensor will monitor the presence of a particulate matter of size 10 microns (PM10) and 2.5 microns (PM2.5).

The matter is only known to be found in anti-pollution agencies, hence the sensor will detect its presence and inform the surrounding of the pollution measures.

The development of the first of its kind, air quality monitoring sensors has been installed in 30 different locations across Delhi and neighbouring towns.

Explaining the functions and qualities of the sensor, IIT Kanpur researchers stated that the air quality monitoring sensor will gather and transmit data with more efficiency. The sensor is more efficient than air quality monitoring stations of Delhi NCR.

IIT Kanpur scientists further added that Delhi has a total of 36 monitoring stations that work under the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Delhi Pollution Control Committee.

The collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Mumbai-based startup Respirer Living Sciences and Ericsson (India) has used the narrow bandwidth internet of things technology for the first time in India.

The project was led by the head of Civil Department, Sachchida Nand Tripathi, and Director of IIT Kanpur Professor Abhay Karnataka.

The generated data of the air quality sensors will be shared with a common platform in order to help communities understand the quality of air in the area.

The sensor is installed in 30 different locations of Delhi and neighboring towns including Dhaula Kuan, RK Puram, Mundka, Rohini, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Noida.

Referring to the efficiency of low-cost air sensors, Sachchida Nand Tripathi, head of department (civil engineering) said," This is a patent-pending technology that IIT-Kanpur has developed. These sensors are low-cost but they are very well-calibrated”.

“This will not only provide a clear picture of which local sources are acting up but also provide information on how much contribution is coming from outside" he further added in his comment.
