IIT’s Placement Affected Due to COVID-19

The current situation has impacted the employment prospects of millions of students. One of the worst-hit are the freshers graduating amid these uncertain times

Despite this, IIT Delhi has seen the best placement record for the past few years with 4% more offers than last year.

As per the recent statement, It has been seen that approximately 85.6% of undergraduate and postgraduate students received offer letters.

However, most of the offers were rolled out during the first phase of the placements held in December.

Placement drives held amid lockdown at other IIT’s were also not that encouraging. IIT Gandhinagar has so far received 17 offers during online placements.

“The placements at IITGN started in October and 142 offers were made till March 11, before WHO declared the pandemic. Till now, only 17 offers have been made in the online placement drive which will continue till July end,” says Abhay Raj Singh Gautam, head, Career Development Services, IITGN. 

Last year, 75% of graduating UG students had received the offer letters from several prominent companies that visited the campus.

Similar is the case at IIT Madras, where the bulk of the placements are over, 24 job offers have been withdrawn till now due to COVID-19.

So far the institute had received 924 offer letters, which includes 241 for undergraduates, 221 for dual degree graduates, 336 for PG students and 126 pre-placement offers.

Furthermore, the institute is hopeful of the situation to improve so that more students get jobs this year.

“IIT Madras placement cell is reaching out to IIT Madras Alumnus to enable opportunities to students who lost out on job offers and those who are yet to get placed,” said CS Shankar Ram, advisor, Training and Placement, IIT Madras.
