Odisha Government Confirms the Decision to Curtail School Syllabus

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Odisha Government has decided to take the edge off the study load by reducing the school syllabus. Odisha School and Mass Education Minister, Sameer Ramjan Das confirmed the decision on August 24, 2020.

Das also revealed that no decision has been taken on how to reduce the syllabus and the clear picture for the same will come up in the coming days. Schools in Odisha are closed till August 31, however, the state is witnessing a spike in cases and the unfavourable situation seems to persist in the month of September as well.

He also added, " We have to wait for the guidelines issued by the Centre and then the state government will take a decision after reviewing the pandemic situation. The percentage of reduction can be ascertained only after the school reopening dates are decided."

Earlier on July 7. HRD minister announced 33% syllabus reduction for CBSE classes 9th to 12th. To cope with the shortened academic year, Haryana Board also decided to curtail the syllabus for classes 9th to 12th.

In a statement said earlier, Das said that the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) will decide on the rationalization of the curriculum for classes 1 to 8 and the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) will take the decision on the curriculum for classes 11 and 12.

Meanwhile, national boards like ICSE also reduced the syllabus by 25% due to short academic years and significant lack of teaching and instructional hours. 

Following the trend, Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education also decided to do away with 28 -30% of the syllabus and in case the schools take more time to reopen, the state board may reduce the syllabus further.
