UGC Invites Feedback on Guidelines for Short-Term Skill Development Courses in Higher Education Institutions

New Delhi: Recently, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved guidelines for offering short-term courses at Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) to boost student productivity at work. The commission is now inviting feedback from stakeholders for guideline improvement.

As per the University Grants Commission, stakeholders can send their recommendations, comments, and feedback regarding the UGC guidelines on short-term courses to the official email ID at feedback.ugcguidelines@gmail.com. The deadline for submitting suggestions/feedback is January 20, 2024. 
 

UGC Chairman Prof M Jagadesh Kumar said, "Individuals who have cleared the 10+2/Senior Secondary Examination or its equivalent and are eligible for admission to any undergraduate program at the HEI, can enroll in these short-term skill development courses. These courses, ranging from 3 to 6 months, will be credit-linked and structured using a credit mechanism by the institute”.

The commission has requested that higher educational institutions offer skill development programs in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, IoT (Internet of Things), Industrial IoT, Smart Cities, Data Science, Analytics, Cloud Computing, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Extended Reality, Cyber Security, Digital Forensics, and 5G Connectivity, among various others.

According to UGC, the short-term courses align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aim of shifting away from traditional, memorization-based learning and towards an expanded and holistic educational approach.

Furthermore, the UGC has recommended collaboration with relevant Sector Skills Councils/Awarding Bodies and the industry to ensure updated content, placement opportunities, funding initiatives, and course credibility.
