Remarks

From my early days in school I was inclined towards computer. Seeing the computer features and programming aspect which computers provide I was inclined towards doing coding from class 9 only. After giving WBJEE 2016, more or less I got a decent rank of around 33k. After counselling I saw Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering college came up as the college allotted to me to take admission with Information Technology as stream. After that I started my research on the college. Talked to a school senior who was studying in the ECE department of BCREC. After seeing the college website I saw that my college has a very good track record in terms of course curriculum, teaching standards, extra-curricular activities and many other things. Moreover I saw that my college maintained a very good track record in terms of placements since it's first passing out batch in 2004. One thing that drove me most to take admission was the department which was allotted to me. I always wanted to go towards programming and learn computing skills deeply. And when I searched about IT department of this college I got to know that it had many experienced and highly educated professors in it. So seeing all these things and talking to the people studying in that college I finalized to take admission in Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering college.

Course Curriculum Overview

My College is under MAKAUT(Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal). The course curriculum was not that updated compared to other Universities. But the course was well structured with supportive teachers so that the newbies like us did not feel any hassle or excessive burden in the first year. In the first year we were taught various engineering subjects like Engineering mechanics, engineering mathematics, engineering physics, humanities etc. The teachers cleared our doubts on daily basis as these subjects were very new to us. Laboratory classes were arranged for engineering physics, mechanics, humanities, and Engineering drawing, etc. The subjects which required laboratory exposure we were provided with that fully. Faculties remained there for us as and when required. Coming to the second year we started to learn about computers and coding. The subject like Introduction to C, Data structures and algorithms were introduced to us. Later on Computer architecture and Automata theory came into our course curriculum. Programming languages like Java, CPP were taught to us with lab classes for both. In the third year our class was taken for a Industrial visit to a company location. Our physics faculty of first year Professor S. PAL, his teaching skills were very good. The way he taught us engineering physics was commendable. Then our Humanities faculty Sunita Mam taught us speaking, writing and other professional skills very efficiently. She taught us how to make professional presentations and how to give presentations in front of 30-40 people. Our then IT HOD DR. Saikat Maity, was a very knowledgeable person in the Information Technology arena. He always encouraged us to learn new skills and technologies. He always told us to make efforts towards software building, making small small things, like, windows application for calculator, some games, application for finding day from date in a month, etc. Overall my four years experience in my college was way better than I expected. I got to learn many things from college which I shall apply professionally.

Internships Opportunities

No I have not opted for any internship.

College Events

5

Campus life is good with opportunity in every activity, whether it be studies, sports, singing, dancing, etc. One can take his/her skills forward by indulging in any of these activities. Every year in our college annual sports day is conducted in which every sport is played like running, shot put, etc. Our college students who play cricket go on to play at the college level and then they go on to play at district level also. BCREC hosts the football tournament also. Every year the football tournament of our University is conducted at our college football ground. Two more yearly events on our campus are the Technical Fest named HORIZON and the Cultural Fest. The Techfest features a very large pool of events conducted across two days. Every year horizon sees participation of about 500 students in two days. A few days after the Techfest the cultural fest is held. The Cultural fest is not that a big event because of space restriction but it is though a moderate event. It goes on for about 10 hours. Professional singers are invited from outside to perform in our cultural fest. We have a recreation center on campus where students practice dance, guitar, drums and rehearse songs also. Girls mainly play basketball and volleyball in outdoor sports. We have basketball and volleyball tournaments organized every six months in our college. One more important thing taught on campus is self defence. Interested students can enroll themselves to learn Karate over the course duration. These are the activities provided on campus to the students.

Fees and Financial Aid

I have no idea about stuff related to loans and scholarships offered by my college. But there is a tuition fee waiver scheme run by WBJEEB for financial backward students. Under that scheme if any students gets admission into the college with TFW(Tuition Fee Waiver) category. Than he will not have to pay tuition fee to the college during the full course duration. He or She will only pay for the hostel if they opt for it. The tuition fees will be paid by the government to the college.

Hostel Facilities

I opted for hostel facility at the time of admission and stayed in hostel for the full course duration. There are many hostel seats available at the time of admission. So there no such thing as scarcity of hostel seats. I have never heard of anyone being rejected while seeking hostel facility. We have 4 people sharing a hostel room. The hostel rooms are very spacious with one bed, one table, one chair and a separate cupboard given to each person in the room. Daily cleaning of the rooms are done. The sweeper sweeps the corridor everyday and washes it in every 2 to 3 days. We are given food four times in a day at hostel. It starts with morning tea at 7 am, then breakfast at 8:30 am, then lunch at 1 pm, then tea, snacks in the evening and finally dinner at 8:30 pm. We have five hostels available for students on campus. Two hostels are allotted for female students and three hostels are for male students. Our boys hostel is a three storied building with drinking water facility and two big washrooms on each and every floor. There are security guards and hostels wardens present in the hostel 24*7. All the necessity facilities are given to us from the hostel authority.

My passion and a bit of curiosity in International Relations led me to choose this course. The curriculum, in fact, prepared me well for further academic pursuits. For improvement, educational excursions and internship opportunities should be made available. The exam is held twice a year on semester basis, with papers set at a moderate to difficult level.
